I finally got to use my two brand new 2258's yesterday and I really like them . I decided at the first of the year I was getting some lighter saws and these saws are great . I don't miss my 365's or my 2165 at all . Even got rid of a like new 2188 too . I still have a 394xp , but I'm thinking of letting it go also .

I really like my 555, which is the same saw only orange.  Prior to getting it I was using a 346 oe, and an ole '89 262xp 60cc saw mostly.  The 55cc fills in the gap perfectly.  Vibration is almost eliminated with the 555 and 2258 saws. My only concern is the autotune  as I always do most of the repairs on my saws.  I'm not computer smart and don't know the first thing about updating or reprogramming its computer if need be.  I have no Husky dealer that is very close to fix it.  But at least it doesn't have as many of the issues as its bigger brother :).

mcourtney

I also had a 346xp that only had about 20 tanks through it , that was a very disappointing saw . I hope I don't catch it for saying that!

What was it about the 346 that you didn't like?

It never seemed to have the power or chain speed that my old 353 did . I'm of the belief they might be a tad overhyped .

I would've liked to get ahold of that 2188!

Sounds like to me your 346 might have had the flu.  Granted, the OE's don't have the low end torque of the 353's 45mm, but should have a lot more chain speed.  If you had the NE, it should had been more all the way around.  The state of tune is a desiding factor as well.

That 2188 had a 24 inch bar and was a terrific saw , but I've changed my woodcutting and wanted to get some lighter saws . Years ago I had an old 254xp and a 55 and it really seems that firewood cutting was more productive with saws of that range .If I had the knowledge on how to post pictures I would try and sell my 394xp on this forum .

I guess this has to be the first time I have heard of anyone thinking the 346 was a dog for it's size. I have heard that they have better ones now, but haven't had the need to upgrade to a newer saw yet, I doubt I will in that size saw, but that new 572 is sounding good to me.

I gave my low hour 346XP NE away to my FIL. It's too much saw for him.
I miss that little saw.

I'm thinking something was wrong with it, but maybe not.  Some guys are not impressed with them.  As far as better ones, I think the 550xp was the saw that replaced it.  I think Willard would know, and for sure Sawtroll.  Myself, I wouldn,t trade a 346 in any form for a 550xp.  There's enough "little" issues with the carbs and starting that soured me.  That's just my opinion.   As far as I know the 346's had 1 big problem which was the early OE plastic intake clamp.  But that was not just limited to the 346, but a lot of saws that shared that same plastic intake collar.  I will keep mine till I'm buried. :)

I've got alot of hours on a 346 too. Best saw power to weight I believe I've had. Had a jonsered 2153 [same saw] with heated handles, sold it to ex brother in law. Sure do miss that one too >:(. 3 or 4 years ago, I had the 346 woods ported and modded. What a saw 8)

No my 346's will not intentionally be going anywhere. I have both 346,s and either one of them will cut circles around my 355. It is dependable and seems to run good, but has never been an impressive saw.
One of my 346's is coming home tonight, I loaned it to my kids 2 years ago, I know it still runs and they cut the last two years firewood with it, which is quite a bit. I also know they would not intentionally abuse it, but you know how that goes. I am curious to see how well it has held up. lol

Wow!  Never ran a ported 346.  That's actually my next saw I had in mind to port.  Just wanted to do a few AM 350 cylinders first just to see if the gains were there and to get the hang of it.   Had a 353g (heated handles) once and took all the heated hardware off and put it on my NE 346.  Best thing I ever did for my hands as I cut my firewood mostly in the late winter and early spring for the following year.  I hate cutting in the heat.  Its my go to saw when my 555, and 262 is a bit to big.

I've had a love/hate relationship with my 346 (not NE) it is a cutting screaming machine, but I've had a lot of issues with it (including the aforementioned intake clamp). When running right, it is great👍 I let my dad use it once, he was so impressed he went and bought a new one for himself, so he has a 3 year old 346ne that probably has 3 tanks through it!😁mccourtney, follow the picture posting tutorial, it takes a few steps but it's not difficult.

One of the few saws that holds there value well.  He could probably bout get his money back if he wanted to sell.

starmac

I was one of the first to a garage sale an older couple were having, he had retired and sold out, and moving out, I saw the 346 oe and ask how much, when he said 125 bucks I jumped on it, without even cranking it, I could have made money on it before leaving his place.  The xp was from a kid that was moving out and I hired to help for a couple of weeks, it was just a few months old, and paid 200 bucks for it, neither owes me a dime, and I could still easily get my money back plus. I don't even know what they cost new, but I see them listed for more on craigslist for more all the time, and they are a popular saw around here.

2258 and 555 are both 60 cc saws, just like the 2260/562. Not 55 or 58cc. Cylinder castings are the same; only tyhe transfer covers are different. Not a lot of difference in power with the jumior models and all of them are great all around saws for firewood. Light enough for small stuff and enough power for larger stuff. Large saws like 2188's are nice when you run into big wood, but that usually doesn't happen often enough in firewood cutting to justify the expence of a new one. I agree that mid size saws like the 2258 and older 55 and 254 are more productive for firewood.

The 346 that was not impressive vs a 353 was indeed in ill health as many have already posted!  :)  And 346's are not as prone to spit the muffler bolts as is any saw with that 45cc 353/350 cylinder. Funny how we remember things, or fail to at times. The early 550's and their issues are always compared to the out going 346NE which was a fully developed saw whose own issues had long been corrected. Folks tend to forget that "legends" like the 346 and 262 had long lists of service bulletins and updates. Few items worse than those plastic intake clamps that are STILL taking out saws. We just saved a low hour 359 that was in for a service with one of those clamps. Customer was about to tackle a lot of storm damage, and I'm glad we found it before he roasted the saw.

I hope starmac fills us in on how the 346 came back from the kids.

Well it came back running, enough said.. Actually not that bad but the bar is shot, will know more once I get a new bar on it.
It does still look good if that counts for anything. he he

Bought my son a 2258 a few weeks ago.  He loves it.  Wish he liked school as much as he likes his new saw.... :D

Oh yeah, we'd have to fight, maybe even have a fight before I'd give up my NE346XP (50cc).  I love that little saw.

The 2258 I got my son is the smoothest running saw I've ever run. You hardly feel anything while running it, it's that smooth, a lot of power for it's size too.

I've been thinking about getting myself a 60cc saw. I go from my 346 to my 365. I'd probably end up using a 60cc saw more then anything.

There more then likely won't be any 2258's left, especially not with the rebate when I'm ready. So I'll probably end up getting a Husky 555, which is fine.

I'm sure you will love the 555.  I sure do mine. I'll be 60 yrs old soon :-\, and I run the lightest weight saws I can for the job at hand.  Have fun. :)

I see this topic is alittle old. lol.   Did you ever get a 555?
