Lately I have been obsessed with planning next years garden and I have been looking for some yellow pencil cob corn seed. I raised a red heirloom variety this year called Bloody Butcher and was very impressed with it. I saved about 3 lbs for seed, Had 18 lbs ground into meal, very tasty, and have been feeding the rest to my chickens. I have decided to try the yellow corn also this year and will try to raise enough to grind at least a 100 pounds of meal for our use. It is much better than the stuff from the store and I know it will be as close to organic as I can get. The pencil cob is noted for being less prone to corn worms due to the tightness of the shucks.

I have searched the web and found a few sources for yellow seed but most comes in small packets. I would love to get at least 2 pounds to start. I found bulk dealers but they all have the white corn seed. If anyone has any idea of a source I would appreciate it greatly.

Don, I couldn't do anything more than search the web, but have you tried your county extention agent? Also if you have a local ag college. Actually, it doesn't even have to be local.  Sometimes those people know what is out there, and more importantly, quality sources. Worth a shot.

On a hunch, I typed in a google search of Kansas State university heirloom seeds. I turned this up.

R H Shumway sells a variety called Pencil Cob. Its a yellow open pollinated shoe peg type of sweet corn. They sell it up to the pound.

They also sell various field corn up to 50 pound sacks.

Just remember, corn has a pollination radius of around 2 miles. If anyone else (including you) is growing another variety of corn within 2 miles, it can cross-pollinate, meaning saving the seeds will not result in a pure stand when you plant them. You can grow the variety all you want, and eat it or whatever, but don't expect to be able to plant the seeds you grow yourself unless the corn is separated from other varieties.

I did grow some Bloody Butcher a few years ago, liked it. The last couple years we grew Festivity sweet corn, a Mexican multicolored sweet corn. Looks great, tastes awesome as corn on the cob.

Thanks, Resolute! Welcome to the Forum! My dad built a scale-model stern-wheeler paddle-wheel boat once, and he named it the Resolute. That was in western Oregon in the '70's. He sold it way back around 1976 or '77, not sure whatever happened to it. He ran it on the river some.
