The Atlantic Provinces Economic Council released a new study today on the competitiveness of the Atlantic Forest industry. The report "Building Competitiveness in Atlantic Canada's Forest Industries: A Strategy for Future Prosperity" examines the current state of forestry in Atlantic Canada, the impact of global market changes on the industry and specific regional challenges facing the sector. In light of these conditions, APEC has made key recommendations to improve the competitiveness of the industry through government policy initiatives and private sector reforms.

The N.B. Forest Products Association (NBFPA) reports that under the federal Plant Protection Act, The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), in consultation with stakeholders including the Maritime Lumber Bureau, Nova Scotia Forest Products Association, New Brunswick Forest Products Association, NS and NB provincial Natural Resources and the NS Federation of Woodlot Owners have implemented a plan to mitigate against the risk of spread of Brown Spruce Long-Horn Beetle (BSLB), which allows for self regulation and cooperation between all stakeholders. Copies of the plan, rules, regulations and the Ministerial Order zones are available through the CFIA, MLB, FPANS and NBFPA.

New Brunswick has approximately 55 000 private woodlot owners. Their land - almost two million hectares - makes up 29 per cent of the province's forest. Wood coming from these lots is usually sold through regional marketing boards.

Information on statistics, the private woodlot silviculture manual and information on forest products marketing boards can be obtained here.

2009 Silviculture Season:

Preliminary talks, leaking through the grape vine, between the regional forest products marketing boards and the N.B. Department of Natural Resources indicate that funding for silviculture will be $6M from the provincial government for thinning and $4M for tree planting from the Federal government as part of their stimulus package for the region. The cost share is anticipated to be 90% government funds and 10 % from woodlot owners this year. A complete about face from last springs budget as they finally see value in having jobs that implement treatments on the ground for future wood supply. Last spring 100's of jobs were lost when the government started meddling with a program that has worked for 20 years. The full details are yet to be settled and federal funds not yet secured. No happy dance just yet.
