I'm new to this forum, but have been involved in woodworking & foresty for  a little bit. Our old deck is about shot (it was untreated pine). I was wondering about building a new deck, but with a hardwood. Would white oak be overkill? If so, what are some others you would suggest? (I want this deck to last for awhile).

Black locust. Will last as long or longer than PT.

white oak may give you some issues with the surface checks getting grime and mildew in them

not sure, though.  I read that somewhere.

lots of dull bands and chains

There's a fine line between turning firewood into beautiful things and beautiful things into firewood.
