The discussion about alder lumber in another thread reminded me about a hardwood mill out on the West Coast.

http://www.cascadehardwood.com/mainfrm.htm

They have a mill tour on their site.  Annual production is 75 MMbf of alder, and maple.  They do things a little different than the hardwood industry in the east.

They buck all logs to 8' or 10', as well as the boards.  Seems that they are missing out on some grade by doing that.

They have their own grading system, but are starting to feel the NHLA pinch.  I looked at the grades and would like to sell my tulip poplar like that.

Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large groups.
