Why do I have to put up with black friday advertising and crowds in stores without getting turkey the night before? Admittedly I did have a hot turkey sandwich for lunch today but it is not the same thing. I really think that if extra shopping is going to be done one day then the preceding day should have a turkey dinner to make the shopping day more bearable for the men. This is what has always been done at christmas, get turkey one day, shop at sales the next. It is a historical trade off and I am feeling short changed. Of one turkey.

Am I missing something? I thought thanksgiving holliday was celebrated on a different day than ours??  Maybe it just isn't time for your turkey. That said, I don't do the black friday shopping thing, I'm too full of turkey from the day before, I guess. lol

Our thanksgiving is the second Monday in October. Family meals generally occur on the Sunday before but we had only heard about black Friday sales until a few years ago. Now you can't get away from it. In Canada there is no cultural reason for it other than pure commercialism. Normally the retailers use at least a semi reasonable excuse, back to school, end of year, after christmas etc.

We will not participate in that feeding frenzy, like watching pigs at the trough when the slop bucket arrives. Canadian retailers have to compete with online shopping and mass exodus to the U.S., most of our large cities are not far from the border. However with the low loonie there is not much of an advantage, if anything it should encourage Americans to come north. If and when our dollar recovers the game changes.
