Hi- I planted this Sugar Maple a couple of years ago and this summer developed this bark split (correct term?). The tree looks healthy otherwise. Should I be concerned? Does this typically heal?

JJ

Looks like a healing over deer rub.

The butt log is no good for a #1 sawlog. Something hit/rubbed that tree. I have some like that from the tractor tire.

I was forced to take down a perfect 15" dbh red maple shade tree because of a very similar wound that trapped water, rotted and brought ants.

looks like you are correct JJ. I checked back last week and it looks like another visit. I put up the fence right after I noticed the new damage. Any chance it will make it?

this is the other side of the same tree
