Title: Garrett 15 differentials
Post by: Highhood on February 20, 2019, 05:36:23 PM
Waiting for my hub seals to arrive for my Garrett 15 so I jacked up all four tires to check for lockers and I do have the Detroit no-spin in the rear and as I rocked the tires back and forth it did the ratcheting sound in one direction and locked both wheels in the opposite direction same as the Detroit in my Jeep. The front has an open diff with no locker. Is this what you guys typically see in these smaller skidders with just one axle locked. I guess it makes sense when your pulling in a turn, you have added weight of logs on rear.

A lot of the early small skidders had an open differential in the front. I have had three like that myself and all three have had the lockers installed before I would use them.

I've setup a lot of different types of differentials over the years and I thought it might be a good time to swap in a locker since I will have hubs and axles pulled to replace seals. A new locker is $1000 but was hoping I could find a good used one to swap in.

I decided to go ahead and pull the front diff center out of my Garrett 15 since I have the axles out. It's a good thing I pulled it as the spider gear cross was broke into four pieces. As the carrier was rotating it was flinging the two broken spider shafts outward machining a deep groove in the housing near the pinion pilot bearing completely destroying the bearing. Not sure yet if I can reuse the case but instead of buying a new cross plan to start looking for the correct no-spin unit. Anyway the fun and $$$ continue lol

Well that bites, but not as bad as it was getting ready to bite.
