Its only a handful more days!
As always, you don't have to RSVP to come, but if you think you are, or sure you are, or think you might, its a great help to let us know here as we start getting ready.
We have called on the pig, we'll call on that again in a couple weeks to confirm. Monday we'll call and order the large plastic box with the flip down seat to be strategically located in da trees.
We have limited space for camping right here which is first come first serve. I need to hear from a couple people yet to know if we have room yet for any more R.V.'s. There is room for several tent campers.

Hi Jeff,
Its been a long tome since i was here. It is good to be back! I don't know if you saw my post in the travel section. If you did me and the wife may be going to northern Pennsylvania before we go to Virginia. If we do, that will put us on I-80 in Indiana on the 1st or 2nd. How far off of I-80 are you. If it is not too far we may swing up for some Pig on our way from Alaska.
Woody
I would have to guess it being about 4 and a half hours or less. But I'm not sure. :-\
From Gary, Indiana to Harrison, Michigan it is 266 miles.
If you don't get lost in Grand Rapids.
Wife and I plan to make it.
17
Have to have sweet taters with the possum. musteat_1

I'll be in Bethel that week, upgrading their network. Even so, we can't afford the airfare this year (flying from Alaska is so expensive). Y'all have a lot of fun and take lotsa pics!

Well, unfortunately for me, I have a nephew getting married that day. The same thing happened last year. Luckily, we're nearing the end of that group, so maybe I can make it next year.
Well I can say that at least 4 of the LogRite clan will be there- the 2 oldest and 2 youngest, can't speak for the two in high school.
I think if BBTom's son Cole would come Megan would find a way to be there. ;D

This is going to be a special Breakfast. An Honorary Breakfast. I have a few jars of some very special Syrup made by our dearly missed friend Pat Johnson (Nailhead). There would be no better place to share, then with those that are here on that morning.
It looks like we have a quart and a half in half pint jars of Nail heads syrup. :) We can supplement it with some from other sources to make enough. :)
QuoteWe can supplement it with some from other sources to make enough.
I think Bbtom make a pretty good syrup if I remember correctly. ???
I've been wondering if BBtom was going to dive on in here and become part of da list. :)
Nailhead refilled my jars this spring so I can add a couple of jars.
I was excited to get a letter in the mail today from one of my best friends from college. It was an invitation to his wedding. I was less excited to see the date. It's August 2 :-[. I'm afraid I'll have to remove my name from the list. Looks like my road trip around Lake Superior will have to wait until next year as well :'(.
This brings the number back down to 61
It's looking like pancakes and biscuits with gravy. Cant wait, gonna be great.
Hey Dodgy, If he's really your best friend, he'll be happy to change the wedding date for you. :D
seeing how men rent a tux to return the next day, and women vacuum pack their dress with hopes that their grand daughter can rewear it, there's now way that wedding is moving!

Da wife and my chances of makin' it took a real turn for da worse today. :( I'm transferred ta night shift as of next week, which also means I loose all my vacation picks. :'(
Maybe someone can stop by on the way and pick up a donation of syrup for the pig roast. I will have to be saving my pennies for a trip to yellowstone the next month.
If I happen to win the lottery between now and then, I will be there.
I just got a call from one of my friends who works for Forest Service Public affairs out of the Ottawa National Forest to say they are sending us a box full of goodies to add to our door prizes. :)

I'm finally in Michigan for the summer - I bought as teardrop trailer - I was all set to attend and...

Well, I was really hoping and planning on making it this year. BUUUUUTTTTT, I got told today that I will be going to Phoenix, AZ for GovEnergy 2008. I have got to be there by Sunday afternoon to set up the center's booth before the show starts on Monday morning. It would be real hard for to get the wife and myself back to Virginia from Michigan, practically after eating all that good food, and for me to catch a red-eye on Sunday morning.
Anyone in Phoenix up for a visit from a broken down old sailor?????
Bruce
I wuz talkin' ta Jeff tuday and he told me he has secured a 3 gallon tub of Blueberry Waffle Cone Ice Cream fer Da Pig Roast 8) 8) cone_1 cone_1 cone_1 cone_1
Do any of you really think that 3 gallons is gonna make it south of Da Bridge ??? ??? :D :D :D :D :D
He better not stop to visit Corley with it. His wife might eat it all too. :D
Jeff,
Are you going to use your Bio Mizer to heat your pool this year?
Still trying to convince the wife that we can do all the driving. We will be driving on Friday too and she thinks it's too much for the kids. We have to cut another trip short to make it. I'll work on her this week.
Tim
TR,
I've been here and there. With the change in my school life, it's gotten harder to integrate forestry into my lessons, so I drop by less because of that. And then, there's the fact that I mostly live indoors.
BUT...I bought myself a teardrop trailer this spring, so I plan to do some camping! In fact, I took my first trip this past week with my boyfriend. The next trip, I may take solo...
He proclaims himself to be an "ol' country boy" - he grew up on a farm. Yet, he forgot how much mosquitoes bother him - and smoke from campfires - and he's painfully afraid of "irregularity". What a whiner! And, he can't start a fire! He kept telling me how to do it and to "let him". Good grief! I have started my share of campfires in my 23 year career as a Girl Scout.
Mr. Fussypants...that's my new name for him.
got my room booked so im pretty shure

Tim1234,
Please try and convince the wife to come. we have kids things again this year. it would not be the same with out all our friends here. ;D
A week from ta day the pig goes on the spit. :) Last night we reinstalled and tested the pool dunker. It still works fine. :)
confirmed flying into Kalamazoo on the 31st :) :) :)
james
Looking forward to seeing ya James! Still got your seat available next to da fire pit! :)
Looks like no-one from Baker will be there this year either. I was hoping to get to come but my wife is pregnant and due in August. She isn't actually till the middle but you all know as well as I do that it could be any time in that last 1 month span. Tom_in_Mo has to many things goin on at his farm to be able to break away. So someone be sure to drink a cold one for me and eat me a plate of the good food!!! I will shoot to be there next year though!!
Dee and Zach are going to stay home and rest for the Kid Rock concert that night. Zach would never make the concert awake if he came and played in the pool all day ;) ;D He agrees ;D I'll be there but will be on my way around 4PM to make the show :) :)
Jeff,
What time is the pig on the table? I might be able to bring some cucumber salsa again, but I might need to borrow a cutting board ;D Time will be real tight between trips and the salsa tastes better fresh.
If I remember Corley5 likes the hot stuff. I've got some home grown habanerro, Ancho and hot bananna peppers to throw in too.
Like last year we will have to leave about 6:00 to catch the fireworks.
Tim
Usually the pig is between noon and one. No problem with a cutting board. :)
Hotter the better 8) 8)
Just got back from Barnie's (Who hopefully will be here Saturday) with a load of sawdust so we can use the Bio-Mizer to heat the pool for the weekend. :)

Dount it. That would be a serious change in behavior. :D
Weather update:
So far, things are shaping up nicely knock on wood for the pigroast. Its supposed to be mostly sunny on Friday with a chance of isolated thunderstorms late, and mostly sunny on Saturday and Sunday. Highs in the upper 80's to low 90's so bring a swim suit if ya wanna get cooled off in da pool!

BTW jeff, ever had a deep fried oreo cookie? Thinking we might fry some up friday nite, MMM hot deep fried oreo under 2 scoops of ice cream...
Might want to call the cardiologist..
Do ya just toss the cookie in the grease or do you use some kind of batter? Sounds like a treat though.
You roll it in something like pancake or funnel cake batter, drop it 300 deg oil, give it about a min, flip it for another min. and you are ready to go.
The batter can be a little on the thick side so it sticks to the cookie
If your gonna try it you might as well use the double stuff oreo, after all, your frying a cookie. :D
the biggest problem we have is not waiting for them to cool before you bite into them, thats where the ice cream comes in handy.. ;D
I'll have to give that a try. Sounds scrumptious!! digin1 digin_2 musteat_1
Bet the ice cream would help with that. cone_1
Never had em, no. Remember though, I'm the guy that tried to fry a snowball. ;D
Were going to have to have a meeting of the minds to decide when were going to break out the blueberry wafflecone ice cream. There is only three gallons, so do we do it Friday night, or do we do it Saturday? Friday would mean, more then likely, generous servings, whereas Saturday, we would have to give smaller servings so it goes around. Either way, I'm getting a BIG BOWL FULL! ;D ;)

Wish I could be there, too.
Warbird, they call it downunder "road kill"---there is a fella making possum pies on the West Coast of the South Island, he breeds the possum, man, you gotta be hungary to eat them?

Hey red dog that is a nice looking camper.
Just a reminder to the ones at the pig roast that are trying to fit in smaller clothes that the blueberry wafflecone ice cream will cause the clothes to feel like they are shrinking. To be on the safe side it would be a good idea if they did not partake of the ice cream so the rest of us could have more. 8)

Dodgy in a Tux in 2009. Yep, that is your penalty for missing this years Pig Roast. We have all decided ;D.
Well, its just me and the piggy right now. I figure, about another hour and the pig will be ready to face the day. ;D I wanna thank Wally (Reddog) and his wife Mary for taking care of the purchase of "little wally" this year (The pig). That was a tremendous help and we love those two. (Mary and Wally) :) (Little Wally too ;))
I thought I would take a minute before I start putting the beans together to post some photos of supper last night. I dont have a count, but we had quite a bunch of friends here and had a great time. Looking forward to the day!

Well, Jeff,
My oldest got sick on the last day of our trip (yesterday). We have a Dr. Appointment for her today. My Niece had strep throat last week so we are worried she has it too.
I am debating on coming myself, but it wouldn't be the same without the family (and the planned sneak attack on Wildflower ;)). I just picked the peppers for the salsa too :(
I'll make the call in the next few minutes. In any case, say hi to everyone and from the little ones, especially to the Stump Jumper crew. There are going to be a few tears when I break the news to the ones still sleeping.
Tim
See ya all in a bit. I'm out the door right now 8)

The Pig is done!
and the first samples are good, MMMM!
The kids and I are sitting here druling and sobbing :'( on the computer wishing we were there.
PT ended up being on call this week and could not get away. He worked yesterday got called in about 8 then again about 10 and managed to get home about 6 this morning. I tried talking him into telling work were to go and heading out this morning but he just did not think that he could make it up there safely after being up for 24 hours smiley_sleeping .
So hope everyone enjoyed lunch and eat some for us. food2
Tell Little Miss Stump Jumper and Ashely (if she made it) Hey from Taylor . Someone has to pick on Furby smiley_devil_trident a little extra for her too. Ok you better pick on him A LOT. teeter_totter
Wishing we were there but there is spirt! :( :'(
Katie-Did, Taylor, Zack and Part-Timer ( zzzz_smiley from his dreams)
p.s. 2009 here we come. I will being the formals and flowers to go with Dodgy's Tux.
Thanks for the pics Jeff, thinking of you all up there, I want to know--the fella wearing a FF T shirt, are these for sale?, if so, how much $$ do I send and to who?-Luv it!!!
I did not know there were "chapters" within the FF family, what about the KIWI chapter? just wondering ???
Richard
Wouldn't you know OWW would be standing there looking for what is "Left". :D
That pig looks like it is "All Right" to me. :D :D
I have it on good authority that the "left" hams are the tenderest. Granddad would take me to Sunrise Grocery, where he was good friends with the butcher, and order a "left" ham. This scenario would repeat its self every time he would go in.
"I've got some good looking "Right" hams", says the butcher.
"No, Gotta have a left ham, their the most tender. Most pigs are right footed and scratch with that right foot. The "right" hams get tough. They just stand on the left foot and it lets the left ham be the most tender. "
Then there would be a lengthy conversation about wrapping it up and weighing it. I, being knee high to a toad, would leave thinking that they were some might smart fellows. :D
Yep, ear infection and possible strep. Made the right call in staying home. Sorry I missed ya'll. enjoy yourselves and eat too much ;) We will really miss you this year.
Tim and Family
Looks like some good viddles. :) Here I am enduring all this rain. ::) So far away from the Pig roast. :-\
Have a good time all.
Oh well, have to settle for blueberry parfait. 8)

Dundee,
Look at the lower left side of the home page below the sponsor links for a link to the Forestry Forum Store.
Thanks WDH, I did not notice the link
Dundee, Burlkraft had these made up back when we sawed up that big Redwood. I'll see if he has one left. :)
Things are starting to wind down this morning. :) Gotta get back outside. :)
I sure missed going to the Piggy Roast this year. :'( There was just no way for me to make it this time.
The event is always in three distinct phases; There is Friday evening, when everybody is really pumped and excited about seeing all the old friends and new faces. Then there is all day Saturday with wall to wall people and not nearly enough time to visit with everybody. But Sunday morning has turned out to be my favorite time there, both times I've been able to attend. It is quiet and calm, with just a few folks around, mostly long-time and very active Forumites. That is the time when you can get in a real quality visit with someone you have admired for a long time.
I got a little blue this past Friday night, and was a touch bummed out all day yesterday, but I'm downright melancholy this morning. I really wish I was there. :-\
I've never even been to one, DanG, and I'm still bummed out. Ah well. The folks who did make it look like they had a great time. Guess we'll have to live vicariously through their experiences and plan on making it next year.
Yep, I'm already involved in talks with some folks down thisaway about planning next year's trip. ;)
Y'all wanna stop by and pick me up on the way? Prolly only a *cough* few *cough* thousand miles outta yer way. smiley_mad_crazy
Thanks for that Jeff, if you can get one from Burlkraft I would gratefull, let me know how$$, rather than sending dollars via the banking system I have a pal in New York than will settle for me in US$

Wow!
What a great time! I'm so glad I could finally make one at the Jeff and Tammy Estate!
If I can figure out how to shake the pictures out of my camera, I'll post a couple.
Dad was very interested in the Rust Reaper sample, and he eyed up my Wood Mizer cap. He'll probably grab it before I have a real chance to break it in...
I left my orange directors chair behind. Oh, well...It could become the RavioliKid Hot Seat...
Thanks again to everyone for such a wonderful time - especially the hosts!

Dave, Kitty, and myself made it back to my Folks place in WV around 9pm this evening, they shot on down to their spread in Va. I'm sure Dave will check in when he get a chance. It was nice being able to ride along with them.
What a long drive ride. I was hoping to meet the entire southern chapter, hopefully next year!
I had a great time, thanks to Jeff and Tammy for creating such a great website and to the members making it what it has become!
We're home and the car is unloaded. What a great time it was! 8) Really nice to see the returning members (and families)again and meet some new ones for the first time. The ride with Dan Shade along was great. I think we discussed ALL of the world problems and came up with solutions for about 6 of them. ;D

The contest was guessing the number of
pine cones spruce cones in this clear plastic container about 500ml in size. About the cypherin part, I just did as a hillbilly does and guessed, but I heard that the Yooper borrowed a calculator. I am not sure how the calculator helped, but he won by a large margin. I am thinking that he shut his eyes and just punched in some numbers. :D

Thank you Tammy and Jeff. Jane and I had a wonderful time. Roast piggy, great people,
and super weather, could'nt ask for more. Thoroughly enjoyed the company and the conversations, just like old friends even though it was the first time for some. Found that even though many miles separated us, we had many things in common. Counting the days until next year.

Thanks to Jeff and Tammy and all of the donors of door prizes the Piggy Party was a great event as usual. It was good to renew old acquaintances and make some new ones. I had my eye on that chair Tom but I don't think it would work. The red is not quite the right color in the shirt. :D
Sure looks like everyone had a good time and I sure wish I could have been there but I am being held against my will for a number of reasons right now, but maybe next year.
The only other comment I will make is the same thing that someone once told me when I was caught wearing shorts. "Those are the whitest legs I've ever seen!" :D :D
Yes Tom,
It is imprudent to outrun ones supply lines when one is in dangerous territory.
Tom, you and DanG were sorely missed....Danny and I were proud to represent the South.
2 of us against the crowd of Yankees are about the right odds.Danny (WDH) had figured out the real correct answer for the cones was ZERO. The question was how many PINE cones in the pig. He shared that info with me but we went ahead with our best guestimates of the SPRUCE cones.......Danny was a lot closer than me.
We did have Dr. Buck in the southern contingent, so we were not so outnumbered after all.
My sincere thanks to all responsible for the Pig Roast. This was my third time and not my last........Like McArthur, I shall return......And you folks can stop worrying about someone REPLACING Tom in that chair.....No one will replace him........Thanks again........Everyone loves my two new t-shirts........I am still in Michigan getting ready to attend my 53 high school reunion next Saturday and I willl wear one there.......FOE

I said Southerly Southern. You and DR Buck are Northerly Southern ;D.
That's a whole lot better'n being Southerly Northern. ;D 8) 8)
I really missed the roast. It sounds like all had a good time.
Jeff, you and Tammy are gracious hosts and very giving people.
Hey, since I wasn't there this year someone else will have to start the "create-a-caption" thread ;D
Tim
Well, that only leaves the Northerly Northern to be spoken about :). Where I was this weekend felt real Northerly Northern to me ;D. But, it was very nice, I must say 8).

Oh absolutely, without a doubt! In fact, I wouldn't mind spending my summers up there. It's supposed to be upper 90s with high humididity here tomorrow, with heat index in triple digits. :o Spring and Fall are deeelightful around here, but Summer and Winter pretty much stink. Maybe N. Zealand in Winter and the YouPee in Summer would be a good arrangement, eh?
The PiggyRoast is such a great event, maybe Jeff should do it twice a year, like August and Febbiewary? ;D :D
What would that make you, Dan, a Sunbird?? :D
I've been called all sorts of birds, mostly odd, strange, and rare, but never Sun...at least until now. Wonder why that is? ??? ::)
Maybe the others don't summer in Pontiac. ;D
Cutting & Tasting The Pig. DR Buck supervises the operation.
Pasbuild was the winner of the guess the number of pine cones spruce cones in the plastic pig, but I was the second place winner and received a prototype LOGRITE sawbuck. It seems to be well made and very sturdy. I like the center supports so the last short section of the log will be held while cutting. It folds and can easly be carried with one hand while the other hand carries the chainsaw. I tried it out today and it worked well. Thanks LOGRITE for donating the sawbuck. 8)
Now if Keven would make a wooden insert for the top to convert it to a little table top, then you could put the chainsaw on it and do maintanence. ;) ;D
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10432/saw_buck_op.jpg)
Looks great, and now throw a log loader on it, and a splitter/stacker for the output, ya got it made...
:) :)
That sawbuck is pretty DanG cool! Might need a light spring loaded chain around the log for the last piece.
Dave
It looks like a very handy tool. I admired it longingly, but alas, I did not have the Luck-of-the-Pigman that day :(.
Danny, I have you know I was joking about the guessing part. I actually used caculus, but I am a little rusty with my calculus is why pasbuild won. ;D
So, what was the winning number??
I used my fingers, counting from the picture, but ran out. :-\
Well, I just get back from the energy show in Phoenix and boy would have liked to be at the roast instead of that 112 degree heat. I know, I know, it's the humidity not the heat. But, I ready did miss not being with you guys.

This Maple set was crafted by the renowned artistic duo of TURN & BURN

As you can see the scene is of a Maple syrup operation done in great detail. This gift is not only very special because of the artist but also the man honored in the art work

Nailhead (Pat Johnson) was a good friend and I'm not ashamed to say I puddled up a bit when presented with this gift, THANKS guys.
TURN = Steve Beecraft
BURN = Jeff Brokaw

Awesome... and gave me goosebumps seeing it.
Congrats on the winnings.
As a direct (or indirect) result of the Pig Roast, we had Piggy Roast visitors today.

Enjoyed joining Robert and Linnea for a tour through parts of the Forest Products Laboratory this morning, and at Da Rox where we met up with Burlkraft.
Had a great time.
Fantastic job on those bowls buys. I can see Jeff handing out a bowl of nuts to the mixed crowd (trying to make a joke here). Makes them taste much better you know. ;D

Well we made it through the pig-roast-do-the UP-Wisconsin-Minnesota-Wisconsin-Illinois thing safe and sound. Put 2010 miles on the truck and never stopped for fuel 8)
Many thanks to Jeff and Tammy for the splendid hosting and to all the forumites who braved the high cost of fuel to turn out. It was a pleasure to meet old friends and make new ones. :)
One of the high spots of our adventure was meeting up with Beenthere for an informative tour of the wood products lab in Madison, WI. Boy, would I like to play with some of those toys :D
After the tour Linnea and I traveled to the storied town of Roxbury and joined Beenthere and Burlcraft at the exotic Roxbury Inn for what is shaping up to be an annual event. Great food and great company :)
I enjoyed it as well ;D ;D ;D
Glad ta hear ya made it back safe and sound ;) ;)
And Ice got my last piece of cake.
We got home this past Thursday just now getting time to post. Haven't really had time to even look through my pics to see what needs to be posted. It was a great time visiting with everyone again and meeting new people.
We would like to thank the sponsors for their donations, Jeff and Tammy for letting us stay there this year and hosting the piggy roast and for everyone that helped behind the scenes.
We all had a great time.
Haven't even had time to check out the blades from Wood-Mizer yet, but they are here
Thank You Wood-Mizer
