I'm thinking of replacing the hand winch on my manual log loader/turner. What I'm not sure about is how to wire it as the battery travels with the saw head. Any thoughts?

You could wire in a recepticle onto your mill to plug in the winch.  Ensure the winch power lead is long enough to run the winch from where the mill head will be when you load a log.  When you are done loading the log just unplug the winch and stow the leads out of the way till you need them next.  A snap cover on the recepticle will keep the saw dust out.  Just make sure you use big enough wire for the run and load.  I take power directly off the 7 pin from the back of my truck  with a 20' power lead.   Hope this helps.

I hook mine to my truck for now. I don't use it all the time and just figured it would be the easiest to just plug it into the pickup.

What is the capacity of the manual winch you are taking off?

It's the standard winch that came with the mill. I'd guess it's 1,000# to 1,500#
