I have a 1988 manual WM LT40 that I've converted to hydraulic using the non standard method. Some parts are from WM and others are from other applications. My goal is to build a mill from scratch that is truly a portable, one man operation. .... Now that I have a nagging back, my definition of a one man mill includes no tailing of the lumber or slabs or wrestling logs before or after they get to the mill. One person and a pig tail control box. ::) .... :P
Entrepreneurs, engineers, homemade builders, tinkerers and dreamers. My favorite kind of folks. ;)

JN68,I would like to buy a Patu loader and mount it on my own trailer too. The amount they want for these trailers and loaders are beyond me.I can use it in the woods and I can haul off rocks too with it.You must have them nasty things too up your way? Now I use my loader to do it.Real slow this way.At times I can only get one rock in the bucket. If the rocks are not too big,I can roll them into the bucket by hand.Seems like the rocks are growing around here. You can't be all that bad of a guy,you have a Ford 350 with a dump. Another toy I need. I really should just buy one,I don't need it on the road, just around The Farm. I am running two Mobile Dimension 128 mills. The are both very rare. They are both hydraulic mills. They load the logs with five loading arms for each mill. Both mills have taper adjustments and hydralulicly lock down the log. One mill has log stops when loading as well as being able to roll the log or cant when desired. A third mill is an Oscar 36 Hudson for sawing primarely Western Big Leaf Maple burl. The fourth mill is a special mill built by Stevens Equipment in Salem for Glen Stevens himself. He had it set at a site for establishing a milling and logging musuem. This mill runs a 52" blad, powered by a 200 horsepower Allis Chalmers diesel, but I have only one wife. :-* :-* :-* :-*

Man, if God will let me live without seeing another one of those, it will be a blessing. On January 1, 1974 I was in The North Sea with the wind in excess of 120 m.p.h.. the seas were running 60-80 feet. There was a rig that had broken loose and was drifting toward us. I said Lord if you will let me live long enough to get my property paid off, I promise you I'll never come back here. The drifting rig changed direction some four miles from us and went by us. To me there are kinf of like looking at a horse shoe. When you've seen one, they all look about the same.
We did the acme screw lft system on the sawmill yesterday. It seemd to be nice. Works off a hydraulic motor. Two toe boards to go then hopefully we'll be finished.

There was a slight misunderstanding between a fir tree, gravity, steel (LT70), mobile sawmiller and the customer. After rebuilding a WM carriage (and being a mechanical engineer) I'm very impressed with the thought WM's engineers put into the LT70 carriage design. Even though the carriage is built to handle wear and abuse, the old frame design took the beating and outlasted the new carriage design. The Dexter axle assembly did not do so well. Hats off to the WM design team.

Ill post a few pics when I get a chance. Still learning, but enjoy running the WM immensely, a nice change from the daily grind. First post here and glad to be aboard :) If anyone near the UP of michigan needs a helper for a weekend or two I'd love to work with someone with some experience running these wonderful machines.

Hey Casey, welcome to the Forestry Forum. Didnt mean to over look you in here, this just seems to be one of those threads that folks only look at every few days. One of our alert members sent the admins a heads up we had a new member in here that needed looking after. I'm not sure of wood-mizer owners real close, but we have several members with other flavors that would certainly let you work your butt off for them. ;) :D
Casey
Welcome to the forum. Pretty nice inventory you got there.
I'm a bit of a drive from you but if you every want to run a Peterson swinger just give a shout.

Hello Casey.Glad to have you here, welcome.Just jump right in and ask questions and don't be afraid to answer some too.Would like to see pictures of what you have.there is a post on how to post pictures posting pictures (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?topic=12416.0)
You have to make a album to keep them here forever. Some forums you go to all that you can find is a dreaded red "X".This way our pictures will always be here. The first couple times is a learning expericence.Just copy of the directions and you will be on your way, there is plenty of help here for you.
Thanks for the warm welcome folks, glad to be here! I'll be heading up to the millsite and hopefully will remember the digital camera to get some pictures. I'm somewhat embarrased to take pictures of the planer at the moment, we just had a mill and lathe installed in the shop so it is an unholy mess right now. But when I run up there I'll bite my pride and snap off a few, not much to look at right now, just a 30hp motor, gigantic cast iron frame, and lots and lots of gears. The finished plan on that is to have a carousel cutter head with several indexed cutters, selectable via an operator interface. The carousel itself will be controlled by an acme thread powered by a servo or stepper. Same with the upper head. We've put some thought into including a resaw primary as well, but getting the blade to set itself via automatic control is proving to be tricky. Best case we hope to have a "feeler" which will detect the width and thickness, then adjust the heads. At a higher level of control you would define woodtype, or cutter RPM, along with depth of cut. It's going to be a long range project, but once it is finished it sure will be neat. By then hopefully my engineering days will have moved onto running my own sawmill days :) Thanks again folks!

I now have the mill and have milled my first lumber!! Works great, the guys at D&L do a really good job.
I am lifting the logs onto the mill with chains attached to the end of the John Deere blade, works really well. The dozer blade is a six way hydraulic, making positioning the log onto the mill bunks really easy.
George
Welcome to the forum. What will you be cutting?
As you probably know, in BC our pine forests are being devestated by pine beetle. We will mostly be cutting Ponderosa and Lodgepole around our home in the North Thompson Valley. We also have a fly in fishing resort at about 5000' elevation with a lot of lodgepole around it. Way too much for firewood so will helicopter the mill in and mill as much lodgepole up for future building projects. As lumber, properly stacked, the wood should last for many years, it will also lessen the fire hazard to cut down alot of that dry fuel. Running the mill at the camp will be a bit of a challenge as all I have available to move logs is an old Willy's Jeep. I hope to make some kind of winch operated boom for it.
1996 WM LT40HD with a 25 hp Kohler, assisted occasionally by a Husky 55 and 372.
Started out in '95 with a new LT40 non-hydraulic that I ran until about 2002, when I bought the LT40HD used.
Towing with a 92 Dodge W250 Cummins/NV4500 flatbed. Used to use an 82 Toyota 4X4 and then a 77 Dodge M880 4x4. Also have a 77 GMC 6500 boom truck project that has been on the back burner for a couple of years.
Have a 1942 Oliver 24" planer, but that is waiting for a dedicated place to set it up.
The new Lucas 830 arrived on friday - gonna make the first sawdust with it later today. Pics on the way. 8) 8) 8)
Congrats on the Lucas.. 8)
Pine beetles are killing trees here too. I cut em' down as soon as I can. Some survive the bugs though?
Thank god we have healthy big Doug Firs. If they die off we're in big trouble..
:-\
Some trees seem to be able to survive with the beetles with no problem. I have a Ponderosa very close to my deck, It shows signs of beetles, but has grown about 10" in diameter in the last 5 years. It is now about 40" dbh.
Congratulations on the new Lucas. 8) I'm real interested how the new sidewinder setworks are. Does anyone know when they will be available for the 827?
I've gotta say I really like the sidewinder, I had run an 827 without it and it's a really helpful feature. Speaking of pine beetle damage, I passed through Grand County(home to rocky mtn natl park) last week on my way to Steamboat Springs and the beetle kill damage was unbelievable. In some places, entire stands of lodgepole are dead, in others 85% mortality seems to be the norm. If we don't come up with a serious plan to nip this epidemic in the bud right now, we're gonna see some dramatic changes in what used to be our national forrests.
I saved one pine that was in a spot where I didn't want to loose the tree.
I buried all of my fish guts... salmom, rockfish etc, next to it, and over a few years that tree snapped back big time..

Looking to expand to more full time and get a couple different mills for the size o logs we are able to scrounge up, am looking at a small scrag saw with edgers for small diameter and another circle mill for milling timbers..... I had to turn down a rather huge job cause i just could not cut the size needed, and my banker said "you did what?" but it was only a $150,000.00 job.

Nah, Im in the stix ;D Those are from Halifax after Hurricane Juan. We sawed a bunch of cleanup stuff there. Guy we worked for was a moron, that lot was waaaaay too small and on an angle >:( We finally told him what to do with his slanty parking lot and everything else..... Don't get me goin..... But more of our work is on farms and in woodlots in and around the Annapolis Valley. We're country boys :)

Well.... I guess thats one way to approach the building of a loyal customer base :o
I know what you mean, but...
This was a guy who had no idea about how to do what he wanted to do. Thought he'd make a bunch of money cleaning up after a hurricane in a city and then make a bunch more sawing all the logs. No money cutting clothesline pulleys and power line insulators :) His main job is television producer, no background at all... Long story, maaaaybe moron's the wrong word ;) Ever work for 6 months on an asphalt parking lot in the summer, on a 12 degree angle? :D :D Gotta laugh so I dont go loonie :D :D

Hi Guys, my mill is a Cook's MP32 that I bought from Horselogger. The mill works
very well, is a simple man powered feed. Had to wait a while before getting with the
sawing, as my daughters house needed finishing, bought the mill last spring. I'm a
farmer, so have a lot of iron, incl 3 JD tractors, 95 to 145 hp, also have my Dad's old
Super H IH tractor and a '05 Case 60XT skidsteer. Use that to load the mill, and to
turn tough logs. Need to build a saw shack, with some room to store lumber, been
humping the lumber into an old barn. No room for skidsteer and forks. Way I've been
doing this I'm either going to get in shape or die. Refuse to hire help. Some
neighbors have stopped by and helped a little to get to watch me saw.
I've been reading the forum for about six months now, picking up information and advice as I go. A couple of weeks ago I drove over to Portland Woodmizer and picked up my new LT40G28. I'm a cabinetmaker, and just got frustrated with trying to get my logs sawn up in a timely matter, so decided to cash the 401 in and invest in something that would at least hold its value. The mill is flawless. I really enjoy working with it.
I hope that you will still have time for cabinets when folks find out you have a mill. :D
Welcome to the forum. :)
Welcome to the forum Hoodoo.Would like to see a picture of that nice new mill you just bought. You will enjoy it.
Thank you for the welcome. I meant to shoot some pictures when I first started sawing, but just couldn't stop long enough to step back and take some shots. I'll try to take some soon while the new mill is still "orange". And like "Tom Sawyer", when he had his friends talked into whitewashing his fence, I have friends who are clamoring to "help" me do some sawing. Maybe I'll just step back and let them do it.
Not a chance.
New to the forum...been lurking for a while and learning lots.
I have a 18" Hudson "Oscar" manual mill that I picked up for a specific job. Not sure where my new hobby will take me, but I love anything that involves working with wood.

Welcome Hoodoo and Osric lots a good hapnin' round here ,, and always a good ting ta see new faces !!
18" Hudson "Oscar" Humm just what I got.. good tool 8) done a bunch a sawin' with it ... Done me well... To bad they ain't a sponsor yet,,, ::)
well I just got a little used Norwood Lumbermate. For support i have a john deere 210c and 450b. Also a 14' 14,000 lb dump trailer, 16 foot flat bed and a 32' tandem dual. For woodworking I have a cabinet shop set up.--4 shapers--2 table saw--three radial arms--16" planer--37"widebelt--pocket drill--face frame table--hinge insertion machine--and bla bla. now I only need logs to saw. But that will call for drying sheds--kiln--straight line rip saw--double sided planer--a moulder--where does the need end????? but i like my toys.
Wood Mizer LT 40 with everthing on it
Four friends and I (woodworkers and woodlot owners) just purchased a used Mighty Mite Bandsaw mill....none of us were interested in full-time sawing, just to take advantage of the nice logs that come up from time to time...paid $4800 for a 1989 model III....low hours, hydraulic head drive, shingle and siding jig, trailer package...heavy duty unit...good shape....should be fun, especially for the low investment of under a $1000 each. Love this site. Cheers, Bob from Madison, Wisconsin
Welcome to the Forum.
You should enjoy the new toy sawmill a lot. Getting ready to saw up some ash when (hopefully never) the EAB hits? I hear the U of WI has been removing ash trees in anticipation of such a thing happening... ::)
Hope to hear how the new sawmill works out, and to see some pics (we like pics :) ).

Hello all,
After running a friends small manual mill, and being unemployed (retired in September) after working out the time I agreed to after selling my small engine company, I decided to go out on a limb and try a sawmilling business. I bought this Gilbert Champion mill last week (new) and I guess we'll see how different starting a business is compared to 16 years ago when I started the engine business. If I prove to be a sawmilling klutz, I guess I'll have a nice little toy to play with.
:)
The saw is a 25hp, with a 24' bed (21' capacity). I also have the trailer, loading ramps, hydraulic toeboards, etc ... I'm looking forward to being in business again. My business partner was good to work for, but once you've been self-employed, it's hard not to be.
cheers eh?

Thanks for the welcome guys. I'm from Stittsville Ontario, just outside Ottawa. While we used to get snow when I was growing up here, over the last decade I'd be more inclined to call this the freezing rain belt.

That's a 8) setup! How's the Dakota for power ???
Nice pics, and doesn't look too cold under that roof....but imagine it can be... ;D ;D
Corley5,
I cut mostly oaks and other hardwood. I does pretty good as long as you don't get carried away. If the V6 ever dies I'm going for a V8 as a replacement.
Sprucegum,
If I get too cold while I'm cutting, I just roll down the windows and turn the blower motor on high. :D :D

Hello all,
After running a friends small manual mill, and being unemployed (retired in September) after working out the time I agreed to after selling my small engine company, I decided to go out on a limb and try a sawmilling business. I bought this Gilbert Champion mill last week (new)
Hey ! Me too ! I have the same, with a 20 HP. Good luck in your new business !

Just got my first mill........LT28 woodmizer

sapsucker, welcome to the forum.I always ask, what's the plan for the mill.Business?,going to saw some for yourself,is it a new one?Have your own logs? Good luck.
Just thought I would do my first post here, I am the proud owner of a lumbermate 2000. Bought it used with a 13 horse honda, found a used 20 horse (honda also) and made the swap. Sure like it better for the hardwoods, nothing wrong with the 13 just a little better with more ponies.

19" sheaves for wheel's
14'4" band's
1600 cc Volkswagon engine
16'8" length of cut
Will cut up to 34" diameter (with great effort on the sawyer's part)

How about a Lane 00 52" Circular mill with Babit bearings and a 210 horse Cummings diesel. The curf is only .25 to .375 depending on the day.
My father in-law bought it ~30Years ago
We've cut a lot of wood but it's time to come into the 21st century. Anyone want to buy it?
Welcome to the Forum!
Where are you located, and what Cummins motor is running the mill?
Dave
I'm located in Delanson NY ~14 miles west of Sechenectady.
The diesel is direct drive. I use a throttle cable to rev up the motor as needed.
We spoke at Jack's workshop. I'm still looking for a good used Hydraulic Woodmizer. LT40HG
How's the WIDE board buisness?
I thought that handle sounded familiar. :) I've made a lot of wide boards in the last year, to bad the guy never sells any of them. There is at least one hydraulic Wood Mizer down in the For Sale section, check it out. You are not far from me at all. I might be interested in your mill later in the summer, are you in a hurry to sell?
Dave
No hurry but we need to sell this one before we buy the next. What's it worth?
2008 Turner Hydraulic bandsaw mill

Mobile D to break it out, stationary bandmill to break it down.
Scoopmobile LD5 for the small logs, 977 for the punkins.
I run a swing blade mill
I run a 48", left-handed, circular mill for an antique tractor club. It is definitely not a purebred as it was scratch built many years ago. It is all manual! We power it with a steam engine for at least one day of our three-day show each Sept. Last year we sawed 8200 board feet of Red Pine at the show. We paid for 5000 board feet of logs. Figure that one out! I had to measure the production twice to prove to myself that I had not made a mistake on the first count.
I have a 48" left-handed mill of my own that I am in the process of putting into operation. It has limited hydraulics, but I intend to add a log turner and some other features.

And sharpener and a few blades ::)
Just signed a contract to process an old neglected teak plantation, almost 30 acres. Sixteen years old. The wood ranges between 7 inches to 15 inches in diameter.
Almost 10,000 trees I figure. This is probably not enough, but at least it gets us going.
backwoods, I just did the C.03 upgrade yesterday, I noticed that when changing settings, it goes up and down about four times faster. 8) 8) 8) Don't know what else it does though. :D

Thanks, Chris :)
I don't imagine there are many around here, either. I guess everything just kinda fell into place and I wound up getting into woodworking and sawmilling. I live on 100 acres, 50 of it woods, so I don't think I'll run out of trees (maybe time ::)). I plan on doing some sawing for others also. I'll definitely keep you guys updated.
I had a circular head-rig for 32 years...sold out last year....now thinking of buying a bandmill for my wife and I to run as a kind of retirement job
just local sales....if someone wants lumber they can come and pile and bring a half sack of bud..a kind of social event
Welcome to the Forum, argyle1! Where you from, and what kind of circle mill did you have?
Dave
Just got joined in here,
I am on my 2nd mill, my 1st was made by Mistersawmill, but was not large enough for my needs, I own for several years now, one that is made by Southern Bandsaw, built in Lyons Georiga, just north of Vidalia. http://www.southernbandsaw.com/home.htm
Its a mobile mill if necessary, cutting capacity is 35" dia, x 21' 6"
has a 38hp Kohler, electric head up and down, chain opperated hand crank feed if necessary, most the time it is, I may in the future convert that to electric, or hydrolic,
and the head is set a about 5 degrees to aid in feeding.
Welcome to the forum Robnrob2. I like those Southern sawmills for their simplicity. I saw them saw ;D at the Moultrie show, and had a nice little chat with Mr. Pickle. He just keeps on keeping on, don't he? I think his demo is one of the more effective ones at a show like that, because it shows that one old guy in his eighties can get out there and make boards. 8) 8) 8)
Well when I bought the mill from Mr. Pickle it was new, and for the size and capacity I got an excellent deal, I couldnt pass it up, it's design is very much like the Cooks MP32 sept a little larger, this frame is not as heavy, and there were many many issue's with it that I had to work out, but nothing I couldnt handle, it was bear bones when I got it, had a 21hp briggs, for me that wasnt enough, so I made sure I had room and for a 38hp Kohler,. and added that to it, adding elect head up and gravity down was a piece o cake, the up button was added just behind the break lever, so if I pull a little it goes down, and not real fast, just right, and pull the lever a bit more and up it goes,, it came with three 2" square tube fences, that you had to tilt for adjustment, I removed them and added 5 vertiicle rising fences via a chain with crank handle on each,, added extra clamp dogs, and 4 full width roller toe-boards, that are winch activated on each,, added the chain feed also,, I belive I wanna add 3 log turners simular lto the claw like on the woodmizer LT40, although I was not impressed with how well it worked, but might a just been the opperator, and then eventually add hydrolic log loader for when I'm on a job w/o support equiptment.
I'll try and get setup here where I can post some pix's in the future,, I hate dial-up
I got my Wood-Mizer LT40HDG24 on May 3rd, 08 from "petefrombearswamp", and since then, I've sawed just shy of 70,000 bf, operating mobile.
Almost ready to pull the plug on it for the season and do any required preventive maintenance through the winter.
I'll have it parked in the back bay of my garage, as soon as it gets home.
June '09, I got a Cooks Cat Claw band sharpener and single-tooth setter. Have it all set up in a corner of the garage!
edit 10/10: Forgot about my trusty STIHL 021 for removing the troublesome knots.
edit 4/12: I got a Wood-Mizer Shingle & Lap Sider (SLR) from "petefrombearswamp" last fall.
Haven't used it yet, but it's in the plans for sometime this summer.
Robnrob,
I think you and I are the only ones on the forum that have a Southern. Mine came off E-bay but the gentleman that I bought it from had wonderful things to say about Mr. Pickle.
Did you do any refinements on the dogs? I've had to rework mine a number of times because of stripped threads - that and the T-handle became a crank pretty quick....
Welcome! Devan
Hey Devan Thanks for the Welcome.Well Mr. Pickle is a real nice guy, and he can build a good sawmill,, the thread problems on the dogs you mentioned is most likely a fluke thing, that can happen , I would recomend grease on the threads, as you do wind them in and out very often, I had to replace my blade tension bolt and nut, as that stiriped out, I couldnt weld in one of those long coupler nuts, no room so I welded nuts on both sides of the plate the tension bolt rides in and greased it good,, works like a champ,,, but now that you opened up the conversation,, I'm sure there will be some things I dont member but,,I went and looked at the mill before buying, it was bout 90% complete, just a hand full of things to do, he was gonna complete it and I p/u in 2 weeks,, I didnt like the Carter Blade guides he had on there, so he was gonna make new,,They were hughe and bulky, and I lost about 2" of cutting width,, I made new ones my self, that were very refined,,got back my 2",, the drive side blade cover had no exit shoot or opening for the sawdustto exit, up at his place he had one board on there, and I cut it like edging and it was fine, but back here with a log loaded on it, It bound up with sawdust , then I noticed no way for dust to exit, I got out the angle grinder to fix that,, the tubes that guide the sawhead up and down, were not welded on perpindicular or peralell to anything, I cut those welds and realigned them,, also the drive side bearings we not mounted on the head at the exact same higth location as the idler side,, so I had to cut the welds on the plate and raise it about 3/8",,all of this occured over a pierod of time,, I enjoy fabrication and inventing new ways to speed and process work, so these things I could handle,, I shouldnt of had to do that, but I needed the mill and what was I gonna do? have him come down here, or me take it back up there, ??,, So I addressed all the problems, and got them fixed my way and faster, as well as learned what to do and what not to do. There were a few other issues, but I dont want to write a book,, I paid 5,800 for the machine, and towed it home,, I now have a machine that is probably woth an easy 12,000 perhaps more.
2008 Cooks AC 36 62T with 25' capasity, computer setworks, debarker, off roller, and 3 log stops, cat claw sharpener, and band roller. Tim
I just got my second mill. It is a round saw made by Bell-saw. Currently it has 4" trees growing up thru it so it may be a bit before I get it setup and running. The price was right to. FREE with one stipulation, it cannot be sold for scrap. This is the first mil that I had logs milled up on back in 1980. It was pulled out of a berry patch and set up back in the early 70's by the current owner's husband. It comes complete with all the original manuals, four saws and all the tools. I will have to come up with a motor for it, but until then it will make yard art. When I get it up and running it will give me the option of cutting rustic ruff sawn lumber. By splitting the boards in half on the bandmill they will be smooth cut on one side and minimize the amount of sawdust as well. It may take me a while to get it ready to cut the first board on it.
Presently running a Cardinal automatic. Before was an Oxford handset mill.
Lucas 618 and homemade trailer just because its easier than loading in the pickup.
It takes me forever to make up my mind on something as I over analize every major decision I make but deciding on this mill was probably the best money I ever spent.
I considered every type of mill I could find info on and asked lots of folks opinions and read alot.
I will, one of these days, get a small bandmill but my focus is on construction dimension lumber and this mill really shines there. The productivity potential of a swingmill is amazing especially when considering the cost.
Lane #2 sawmill with a Continental RD-572 Diesel power unit. Was told the engine was from around WWII. Running but having alignment issues that need to be adjusted to cut straight and true. 48" insert tooth blade, with a spare 52"
Recently acquired an 1889 S.A. Woods Number 4 outside four-sided planer/moulder with a milk crate half full of bits, and a Waukesha 6 cylinder power unit (1930s?). Building a lean-to on the side of the garage for it right now.
Anyone out there with a old two-gang edger that I can save from the scrap pile??? New England preferred, but could go west to Buffalo, NY or so.
Cheers
Matt
Mill is made in Portland Oregon area, Mighty Might Mark IV.
I'm new to this forum stuff, but wanted to add my 2 bits. We have a Twin-Cut mill built in Alberta. It's a circular for wood up to 28" x 20'. We are in B.C. cutting ties with it.

Running a Lucas swing blade and 4 Morgan horizontal thin kerf bandmills.
Using the Lucas to square logs over 10", then to the Morgans. Smaller logs go straight to the Morgans.
The Morgans are set up in two feed through lines, 2 Morgans per line.
We average 15 to 16 mbf of logs per day with this setup.
Also have a new Peterson swing blade in the warehouse but haven't used it yet.

LM 2000,... without power.. bought on my Birthday (15 Oct.).
Peterson WPF 827, just got it (2 Nov.) and sawed with it today & I like it a lot.
LM 2000 Mill has two 4 ft. bed extensions and other options. I'd like to install the 19 HP Lombardini diesel to re-power the mill (was electric) in the near future. All these plan's were delayed with my Dad's Sickness in November and death in December 2009. I took a job in Alabama in 09, 2010 and all my plan's went on hold until my (final) retirement in October, 2010. I just set (Dec. 10) my NW 2000 up in a stationary set up and still blocking it up and adjusting the bed supports.
Delta Planer 18 x 12 throat, powered by gas motor, 2 Delta Jointers, Wood Lathe, Up Right Jig Saw and Hand Saws, , 2 Lathes, 2 Milling machines, big radial drill and 4 drill press(s), 3 welders, plasma cutters and other support tooling. Basically a life time of buying tools... just little by little.. I never made big money over the years... such is life for the working man; I owe, I owe so off to work I go !
(3) Homelite's & chains, graps, lot's of stuff from the 60's, just bought some newer saws -- Solo 681, Efco 151 and use Homelite Super 240 for my 62nd Birthday (15 Oct.).
Support Equipment:
1966 TD-340 dozer, 6 way, with winch (bought new in 1967 by my Dad (Jack). I was 15 then and lot's of great memory's skiding logs & loading paper wood with the hyd. loader trailer hooked to the TD 340.

1954 D-8-2U dozer, hdy. blade

1975 65- Chev. dump
1978 70- Chev. utility bed & crane truck
1991 Marmon truck tractor
1990 KW K-100-E truck tractor
1994 KW W-900 truck tractor
(4) Chev pickups
Florida Location:
2001 Dodge Diesel 3/4 ton, 681 Solo, Efco 151 and Homelite Super 240 Chainsaws. Just added (Dec. 10) a 1977 Jacobsen 1450 Hydro Tractor with 14 HP Kohler and 3 point hitch, nice old tractor; Feb. 10th -- Belarus 800M Tractor, IHC 350 Industrial Tractor, Winham 12,000 Lb. Forklift and GMC 7000 contractor bed dump truck.
That's all my... old time... trucks & equipment and lot's of great memories. I'm 62 now and still like the old stuff, some would call it old junk but it all works. I'm working at my own pace (no bills) and do as I dam well please. Retired Army, 30 years of service, Vietnam (70/71) and Task Force 160th Special Operation's (wordwide deploymen). I moved to Bonifay, FL from PA in Sep. 2010. I had plans to go back to PA but it was Not the Same with my Dad passing away, have a big hole in my heart. It hurt my heart (more than I ever imagined) to walk in his house and have my mind flooded with so... many memories and now he's gone. My Dad did not have a easy death and a lot more to the story. I mention it here as little reminder to the reader to "Not Trust Other Medical Folk's " to do their job.... my Dad starved to death. He was not feed... died from malnutrion. I plan on living in FL during the Winter and PA in the Summer.. starting June 2011.

Hello All,
New here, well reading for awhile, but mute.
I had a circular mill. 48 inch blade, 14 foot carriage with three headstocks and taper adjustment either end. Detroit 671 power plant with Rockwell PTO. Great unit. Sawdust blower and an edger which I never got power to. I rebuilt everything except for the husk. Poured concrete pillars every six feet for the tracking and a big pit for the blade and blower. All gone now, except for the concrete, but I still have sawdust in my blood and I am dieing, is that a word, to have another mill. I am leaning towards the circular, of course, but the band mills are nice too. I have a friend come over every so often and qtr-saw oak, beech, and maple for me. As well as fir and spruce for dimensional, and cedar for decking.
I have a couple hundred acres with all of these species on it and would like to buy a mill that will be as practical as possible. I know this is the Ford, Chevy question but I value peoples opinions, and I love reading all of this forumn.
What are your thoughts on this? :P
Also have 300B Case, 1958 I believe, 990JD with loader, 501 Farmi Winch, hell of a unit, and several differnt implements. Husky 353 and 570.

Welcome to the forum reprosser. Nice mill you have there! Tell us about milling your first logs.
Added an ED26 WM Edger last week. One of the last Cat powered in stock. Picked up in GA last Friday. After 8 years of edging on the mill, I finally decided I could justify the cost. I cut about 75,000BF of mostly cypress in past year and have about that much on yard to cut now. I have found good part time help, so maybe the edger will be profitable.

Well, after I got home - I had to remove the mill from the wheels and set it up.
then I loaded a SYP log and made the first cuts to create a cant
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/21513/3069/FirstCant.jpg)
Then cut some 2"-ish boards
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/21513/3069/FirstBoards.jpg)
Then I milled a white cedar, an oak, and a wild cherry log.
I posted a video of the mill cutting the cherry log on photo bucket, but I don't know if I can post links here.
I forgot to tighten the blade after starting up the next day, so I got to experience a diving cut... :-[
I have been busy with priorities, but hope to get a bunch of timber milled before too long. Got the initial batch air dried and ready for the kiln.
I operate a Hud-Son 228 that I set up on a concrete slab. Currently sawing pine to build my wife and me a house. It's all manual and I love it. I lost a lot of weight over the past summer and when people as me how I lost it I tell them, "Buy a sawmill and run it in Mississippi during the summer."

Hello all. Here's my homemade Simple Saw type band mill. The engine is a 10 hp Robin. I built it several years ago. Thinking about building another mill, swing blade this time. (Homemade log arch shown, too.)

I have a belsaw m14 and a homemade bandmill. They both work well. The Belsaw is pto powered with a 40" blade. The bandmill I built has an 8h.p. Honda, with a 28" max. log width.....biggest I've cut was 20. They are both slow going, low-key, but work very well.......and cheap to run.

1983 mobile dimension model 128, I bought it in pieces back in february, with the engine full of water and fir needles. Got the engine running and throughly flushed out in the beginning of March, ordered a grand worth of parts and assembled in in early april, got it cutting last week and finally cut 2000+ BFT in the last 2 days. I love my mobile dimension saw!
2011 model ms660 magnum 36inch and 42 inch bars, Gb lumber mill, rail mill similar to the wombat mill (home made), home made alaskan style mill, 1991 034 stihl with 18 to 25 inch bars, currently rebuilding this saw as it poohed a crankshaft bearing and spun the bearing in the crankcase requiring some fancy building and machining. Last but by no means the least I am designing a dedicated slabber running a vertical shaft four stroke, plans at this stage are for around 50 inch bar but in time will get a bigger motor and bar.
want list consists of a lucas and maybe a woodmizer lt40, but this will probably remain the want list for a long time.

Almost ready to pull the plug on it for the season and do any required preventive maintenance through the winter.
I'll have it parked in the back bay of my garage, as soon as it gets home.

Foley Belsaw M-14. 36" fixed tooth blade. 30' frame - PTO drive -everything works great.

stumps seem to be the hardest to saw and sand, but have the best character.
I am running an Italian build Pezzolato HD8, it has a 28kW lombardini turbo diesel engine, forged steel bandwheels of 800mm diameter and uses 54mm (2") wide bands of 5740mm length. It can handle logs of 90cm (35") of diametre and 6,10 metres long (20ft). All functions are hydraulic and computerized.
Welcome to The Forestry Forum, Log-ic. I also appreciate your efforts to convert the metric measurements to inches and feet. It doesn't seem to matter how old I get, I just can't get the hang of metrics. :D
Welcome Log-ic!!
I worked for a company in Belgium a few years back, located in Lier. As Tom said, thanks for the conversion!!! We still use metric parts for our equipment, but as Americans, we tend to always convert it back to standard.

Hello all!
I have a belsaw M-14D with 40 inch and 42 inch blades powered by a chrysler 360 v8 out of an old white combine(it is governed and way more power than I could ever want) 8) that also has a hydraulic pump for a hydraulic conversion I will do once I have the time. I actually assembled the Belsaw with the 40 inch blade that was new in the crate still(circa 1978) and then found another Belsaw on craigslist with the 42 inch blade that has a bigger carriage and a hydraulic feed. I have a few questions in regards to my proposed setup: 1) can I bolt the carriages together? One is a two piece, 12 foot with three dogs and the other is a one piece, 10 foot carriage with two dogs. 2) I acquired a jockey sharpener with the second mill and I was wondering where to get replacement wheels for this sharpener? 3) Since I have 2 blades, 2 madrels and more horsepower than I know what to do with, can I set this up to run both blades, one on top and one in the standard position below the carriage? I assume alignment on two blades could be a nightmare, but I was just wondering if anyone has had any experience with this. Thanks!
P.S. I have been reading on this forum for quite sometime while putting the first mill together and this has been a wealth of information and ideas.
Welcome to FF reride82. 8) glad to have you.
Just bought a 1988 Woodmizer LT30 which I will haul home in the morning. Everything seems to work well on it, saw it saw a log up. What advise can you give me for putting it into service. What common spare parts should I put in inventory? I have never ran a bandmill and am looking foreward to learning to operate it as it will be quite handy on the farm. Looks like I will be selling a Belsaw M14 in the near future. Thanks for the help !!

mainetimberfarmer, welcome to the forum. Makes my Thomas kinda small with a 20 foot track. Must be cutting long beams for timber framing.?
Jeez, been here for years and never filled out this section. My first mill in the mid 80's was a circular, only thing I bought was a couple of Simonds 46" saws and two or three headblocks built everything else.Machined the arbor, and made the collars from those cast iron weights used to close fire doors.Powered with steam in the summer and diesel in the winter used that mill for ten years and sold it.Got lonely and built a bandmill which I'am still using.Bought an old circular sawmill in ruin and rebuilt it,powered with a Ford Dagenham 100hp diesel its a hybred Chase& Lane still using that one.I load with a JD 60 with JD45w loader and forks.Sharpen bands with a Cook's Cats Claw and set with a homemade two side setter. Hi all. This is my first post on the fourm. I built my timber frame house 16 years ago with a Woodmizer. Currently I have a timberking 1600.
Welcome mainetimberframer and matt5 to the Forestry Forum. Now how about both of you starting a thread in the "Sawmills and Milling" board and give us a good log winded introduction. ;D
Hopefully better late than never, give me enough time I usually get it right.
Started sawing lumber freehand with a 1985 028 Stihl, 20" bar then added and 36" Alaskan mill (028 now in parts in a tupperware bin and mill in garage rafters). For about a month I tried sawing logs on my 14" bandsaw in the basement using a sliding log deck. In 1990 picked up a Sperber 52 mill with two 1970's Stihl 090AV's and Sperber 52" mill (this mill also in rafters, saws still get used with 41" bar). Sawed some big wood for a while.

Honda 500 4wd forman to pull home built skiding arch. Logosol PH260, sthil170 & 290, Logrite cant hook. Mitsubishi 1600 hopeful power unit for stuff on second list. Home built owb to burn slabs for heat. The rest is not in use. Hopefully after retirment 1-4-12 !!!. 40'X60' steel trusses for mill shed, JA FAY & EGAN 24" planer,Frick 2 blade edger, International 3400 back hoe that needs clutch, 70' of powered conveyor, and 40' of roller table.
Welcome, never finished, to the forestry forum.
Thats quite a list. That retirement date is next week so congratulations.
That stuff you don't have done or fixed yet is just what happens when you ahve too many irons in the fire, or too many fires to keep going, or your irons spread out over serveral hundred fires, or ya run out of firewood. ;) PC
Retirement at 50! Lucky you. Good to have you here. Good luck with your projects.
Well I"m not compleetly retired, but I am through working in the highway with nothing protecting me but a striped vest and a red flag. I think 28+ years of that is enough. I still have my part time gig working for a demolition company, sawmilling, remodeling, and so on.
Paul your right I have way too many fires going. But as the younger folks say, I guess, thats just how I roll.
Thanks for the welcome guys. I have to admit I've been lurking long enough, I feel like I already know most of you personaly.

i bought a used ez boardwalk model 40. i've sawed about 4 logs on it now!
we just put it in the barn. those hay bales will be gone soon and i'll have room to pile some logs.
so far we are stacking the boards up above in the barn to air dry.
i built a small dehumidification kiln but haven't fired that up yet.

First sawmill? What's all the lumber going to be used for. Looks like you have an off bearer waiting for you to get sawing. ;D
I will use it to hopefully do some custom milling and make boards for my own woodworking. yeah my off-bearers will be sad when those bales are gone. ;D it sure keeps them busy while i mess around. and it keeps them away from the sawmill.

Hi.
Been lurking here for a while and finally picked up a used home built mill..
27hp liquid cooled Kawasaki engine, 35' track with 24" wheels.. Have milled 2 logs before the weather chased me inside and as soon as these -20ish temps are gone I'll be back at it.
Already thinking about modifications, need to build a simple log dog system as it now uses turnbuckles with a set of teeth at one end.. track had to be cut to transport so hinging it where I made the cut is a possibility so I can put a axle under it and transport it..
Want to build a sharpener and setter at some point as well but for now I will be looking for a local place that sharpens.. I am told WoodMizer will only sharpen their own blades and I have about a dozen 1 1/2" Lenox blades..
Pic in my gallery I just cant seem to attach it to this message??
looking forward to learning from the group.
Cheers

I joined the forum a few days ago and just now discovered this thread. I have a Fisher and Davis hand set circular mill that was made in 1889, and a Kingsland and Douglas hand set circular mill that was made about 1900 and has been mounted on a pair of old truck frames with an axle to be portable. I power the portable with a flat belt from a John Deere tractor, and the Fisher and Davis has a D8800 Cat power unit, that still needs to be connected.
I wish that I had found this site several years ago when I was setting up my first mill. There is a wealth of knowledge here that has been a big help.
I do not do a lot of sawing, mainly for friends and neighbors and myself, but I sure do like the sound of a saw singing through a Walnut with the JD 720 up against the governor.

Looks sunny and warm there, raining cats and dogs here. nice building over the mill you sawed it I'll bet. what powers your circle mill? Is that a nice old Oliver tractor on the band? Are those pine trees in the background?
it was a nice day that day about 55 degrees , it's been a lot warmer than that lately into the 80's . that old circle mill is a minn moline 403 and about 75 hp at 1260 rpm . that's the speed we run and it turns the mandrel 580 rpm on a 48 inch blade . yes, we sawed all the lumber but not all of it came from our pines some came from neighbors trees they gave us. I hate to cut mine unless we have to. the Oliver 66 is one of our pullers I had parked there when the pic was taken . the bandmill has a 5 hp electric on it .
Runnin' a Lucas 8-25, have a slabbing attachment. (ain't mustered up the courage to put that on yet but theres a scary lookin' black walnut 5' butt log sitting nearby the mill callin' my name.) ... or was it callin' me names?
Hi All. I've been on here for awhile but never divulged the scale of our operations. We are a slightly more than part time, slightly less than full time operation. I've never been one to put all my eggs and 1 basket. We are running a 225 timberjack and IH Fleetstar with Barko loader for logging. All timber is hand felled. Handling equipment includes primarily an IH 3850 wheel loader w/ forks. Also have a small JD 350 dozer that doesnt see much use. Mill is a frick 01 handset with 671 detroit power. Also have a sooner or later to be operational (Jeff this is your invitation to help get this thing flying :)) CMC Forestall automatic mill powered by electric fed from a Cat genset. We are happy where we are at with the current mill (frick) but are working toward getting this one operational soon.
Frick 0, currently under construction. Six cylinders of SCREAMING Detroit Diesel power. I'm looking at adding a portable bandmill to the mix. You know, the old 'diversify and conquer' or was that divide and conquer?... This Detroit drone has me all confused :).
Home built band mill and 2004 8" Peterson swing blade mill.
We just bought a Belsaw M14 from a guy that's had it for the past 43 years. I've wanted one since I was a little kid! I'm headed to pick it up on Friday, and then the questions will start.

Just an update, I'm now running a '92 Lt 40HD. I've got the sharpener and setter too, an '03 F350 crew cab to pull the mill and an old case TerraTrac loader for skidding and chores around the millyard. I still have the mobile dimension mill, funny thing is it doesn't get used much any more as it's not nearly as mobile as the Woodmizer. I have used it to break down big logs for the band mill though.
Howdy ,
Just signed up and hope to gain some knowledge on milling
We have a Mobile Dimension 127 mill that we got in poor shape.
The mill sat for almost 8 years on a barge floating on salt water.
I replaced all the bearings and belts and freed up a few seized parts.
The seized magnesium VW engine was so eaten away from electrolysis I used only the crank and the old tin.
I scattered 3 1600 VW engines to get enough parts for a good power plant.
I added a tuned exhaust and a Volvo side draft carb- electric start, VW distributor with an electronic ignition and a junkyard alternator.
I've done a lot of milling with it so far, mostly huge Cedar and Spruce trees. The trees are on our property and were going to fall into the river.
A friend and I just built a steel mobile frame which makes it a lot easier to move the mill to the logs.
We use a International ex Highways dump truck with chains to move the logs using steel wire rope and lots of blocks.
A Kubota 4X4 tractor that is just a bit small for the size of trees I'm messing with.
The mighty 1958 VW drop side pickup to haul the scraps away to the wood shed.
2100 Husky with long bar and a Stihl 023 for the chainsaw work.
I wish I could figure out how to add photo
Hank
Welcome, DaTowd. Click on "Home" at the top left of most any page, then scroll down to and click on "Behind the Forum" almost half way down the page. There's a sticky at the top of that page about posting pictures. If you can read, you can post pictures. Have at it.
thanks shotgun
we moved a cedar log close to our shop to test the new rebuilt mill out

using the block method got old real quick so a friend and I welded up a mobile steel frame sure makes the job a lot easier
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/29521/mill_ruf.jpg)
the tuned exhaust makes the engine sound great --more like a purr not the blat the old stock "mufflers" made

That rings a bell about the mill being on a float in saltwater, was it the same one that the guy had on a log float down in Namu? Pretty handy for cutting beachcombed logs, but, as you've seen not very good for the the mill...Great to see all of these west coast MD mills coming out of the wood work! Nice job on the frame and end stands.
Hi Dave
Our mill is not the one from Namu- when I last saw Pete's mill in Namu he had it in one of the huge old cannery buildings.
Our mill was used near Bella Coola to build a cabin then it just sat.
I've been giving it a real work out cutting beams for our next building project.
lots of interesting reading on this site
cheers
Hank
I'm a newbie that's been lurking in the shadows for a spell, reading and learning from the site.
I have a timberking 1220 manual w/ 25 Kohler, recently aquired second hand. Nice little mill that will suit for my current needs. As my user name sorta implies, I mainly cut sinker cypress I pull.
Stump
Not sure but would like to know. It is suppose to be a Frick but it has a gear that drives the log cradle back and forth anybody got any ideas. I cant find one like it anywhere on line. It has a flat belt pulley on one end that attaches to what looks like a differential and the blade shaft comes out the other end of what would be an axle.
Picked up my LT 35 manual mill today...
It was a long day of training and I have some major reading to do...
I think I'll name her the Orange Blossom Special...

Wow, am I the only one on here with a Logmaster? I have an LM4 51 hp Perkins Diesel. 30 inch band wheels, 30 inches between guide bearings.
Photo Electric setworks, 24 ft cut length. All hydraulic , I bought it new in 2007. I work full time in the Port here in Hampton Roads and just run my mill if I feel like it. It's paid for it self a couple of times. I buy my blades from Kenna-Saw out of Kennasaw Georgia. They are 19' 1"
1 1/2" x7/8 x.055 Munkfor Blades. When I buy 50 or more there $27.00 each drop shipped to my door. Does anyone know where I can get'en cheaper?

Don't think you are alone. Go to Search and type in "Logmaster". You will find others with them.

Roy R,welcome to the forum. What's the plan for the lumber? How did you get hold of a Norse winch in WI? I have the Norse 450,with the pivoting butt plate on a 40 hp NH.What's a ford 655D?
Hello. My name is Chuck, and I'm brand new to the forum, and brand new to the world of band mills. We purchased a new LT15G18 just this past Saturday. I've spent the last month researching mills, and this site popped up alot. I've learned alot, and need to learn ALOT more.
OK, let's stick to the subject. Here it is being unloaded from the trailer on saturday afternoon. Did I mention it good to have friends with big machines? The 2 guys in the pic are Jim and Carl. Carl is my neighbor with the back hoe, and Jim is a long time friend.
Well, it seem I have to learn to upload pic to the forum. Lookin' for some help here.

I got some land with a lot of trees and I'm planning on building my retirement home soon with the lumber I cut. Plus I'm look for some type of hobby that might be able to make me some money on the side when I'm retired. I'm hoping to be able to pull the plug in about 4 years.
I just picked up the EZ boardwalk here in WI at a logging expo. This saw milling is all new to me. I was a little over whelmed when I cut my first log. I still got a lot to learn but I'm hoping with the help from this forum I will be able to make good use of the mill.
I ordered the Norse 350 online from Labonville a few years ago . I think they are in Vermont.
My Ford 655D is a tractor loader backhoe. My original intent was to put a grapple on the backhoe and pull my logging trailer and use it as a forwarder for hauling my logs out to the landing. I'm not quite there yet. I'm having a problem with not being able to lower my stabilizers right now. Too many things to work on and not enough time.
Hello Roy R and Welcome to the Forestry Forum. :) How about dropping down and posting an introduction thread so we can get to know you better ???
Roy,not that it really matter, but Labonville is only in NH and Maine. They only have 5 stores. I've been to 4 of them so far. Two are close by to me.Someone else on here put a grapple on a back of a tractor on here. Seem like he uses it for his wood splitter. There are also pictures of a member that uses a small excavator with a grapple and they haul a trailer behind it.

Here's my winch behind my 40 hp Ford.
I also made up some 3 foot chains for the small stuff. Much easier to pull only a foot of chain through a choker instead of 5 feet.
Makes my equipment look miniture in comparison. :D

Nice mill Pete.....looks like it'll get the job down.
solomon, now educate us on what kind of mill you have,Logmaster?HP,hyd?
Its not a sponser mill cfarm. I will tell you its all hydraulic with a 51 hp perkins diesel with the cat name on it. Had it about five years . Came out of Texas if that tells you anything. I have been very pleased with it.
You are allowed to talk about non-sponsors mills, just not advertise them ;)
Well then.... Yes its a Logmaster Model LM4. I have the Photo Electric setworks system that works well for me. It has 30 inches between the guide bearings when they are all the way open. It will handle up to a 36 inch diameter log 24 feet long. I seldom saw logs that big but I have done it. With a 36 inch diameter log its very close , I have about a half inch of clearance on both sides for the head rig to pass over the log. It seem to have more than enough power, it will spin the clutch before it will bog down. That has only happened one time when the cant bowed up while I was 6 ft into a 12 ft cut and it pinched the blade between the unfinished board and the cant. Other than that it has cut everything I have fed it with ease.
I do have to slow my feed rate down when making a wide cut in some hard woods . All end all, I'm very satisfied with it.
Hi,
New here, just got my first sawmill. Actually, my son (19yrs) just worked the deal and so far had paid for it... (quick side note, he gave me a CRANE for my birthday when he was 16... He's NOT holier than thou, and there's days I'd, well, you know, but overall, he's a pretty good kid!)
It's a Corley. Has a 48" blade, style 3, powered by a Chev 192 inline six, through a Powerglide transmission! It's NOT governed, but has a all or nothing selenoid on the throttle, connected to a switch on the carriage handle.
The guy we're getting it from, it's still at his place, about a mile and a half from mine, has been there 30 yrs (mainly dormant the last 5, was his primary income for about 5 of the 25 he used it), was told it would never work that way. Well, it does.
We'll keep it on his property until we have a place ready for it on mine. He's tutoring us on how to use, maintain and tune it. It's definitely a bit loose and needs some work, but overall it's pretty good. It's set on piers on dirt, with a small cover over the works. The carriage has been "metalized", and nearly all of the babbit has been replaced with bearings.
So far we've cut about 4,000 bd ft or more on it. I can't believe how slick these things are.
Insofar as the rest of the "iron", a few old allis chalmers tractors, we move logs mostly with a old Bobcat 610 skidsteer and a rather new Taceuchi TB135 mini excavator. I do have a fully equipped machine and wood shop, and most of a fabrication shop.
Our first "job" with the mill is making 2x6's for walls for a hangar we're trying to put up to house our little airplanes, a 1930's style homebuilt called a Pietenpol (built by someone else around 2006, powered by a little airplane engine - many of these are powered by ford model a engines!) and a 1946 Aeronca Chief. The rest of the hangar is coming from a chicken house we've been given the materials from if we take down the 60' we need.
Seems like a really well run and useful board! Thanks for letting me in!
Cheers,

Tools, welcome to the forum. Lucky you to have someone show you how to run the Corley. When you do get ready to move it,take lots of picture too. Ever been around a sawmill before? sounds like a good son to me buying a sawmill. :D
Hi, thanks!
Not really, have some time helping around a coupla' band mills, but this is the first circular. It's pretty obvious that they're CRAZY non forgiving of inattention. However, I gotta say, they're not NEARLY as "scary" as I thought they would be. The big old blade is chugging along pretty slow (500'ish rpm), not terribly noisy, rather controlled.
I like the set up a lot (circular's in general). The waste of wood isn't really important to me as trees are basically free in the southeast. If you can handle them, people will give them to you. And they're quick. Would love a band mill as well for really nice rare wood, but for now, this is the way to go for me.
I'll get a lot of pics where it's at, and some video of it in operation and will get TONS when it does move. First priority is blade understanding and tuning, then rigging. I'm reading like mad on how blades work, how to sharpen, swage, shank evaluation, etc. The blade has "runout" (I'm basically a woodworker, so this is more of a table saw term, not sure yet if it's "tight" or "loose"), so I need to get in and evaluate that. However, it cuts very consistently despite that. Sitting for 5 years, I'm assuming the shanks have lost some spring.
I'm away from home about half the time or more, and I've learned more about blades in the last couple days (Payne website has good links) since I've been out of town.
Also, since it's not governed, I need to get my strobe over there to calibrate myself to what 500 rpm really does look and sound like. Also, I'll be able to see what speed it vibrates the least at, that should give me an idea as to what the cause is.

Here's the only two pics I have, not very good... then battery died.

Welcome to the Forestry Forum, BC. :)
Welcome to the forum BC-2000 with 2 logrite cantdogs on the ground. ;D
I am brand new to this board, in fact this is my first post.
I am running an HFE 21 Homesteader with 220 electric motor, from Hudson. I picked it up this spring. I also run an Alaskan mill that I designed and built for bigger material, big logs I cut down into cants that will then fit on the Hudson mill.
I have cut up around 10,000 board feet of logs into lumber so far and have gotten a feel for the mill and learned a lot about it's limitations... and mine...lol.
I just poured a concrete pad for my mill and extended the tracks out to 26 feet and I am in the process of building a log trolley system to lift the logs from the log deck and then I can just roll them into the building over the mill. I bought a planer last week and as soon as the mill is fully setup I will setup the planer decks and the planer.
Next step is to put up a building for a kiln. Logs have been pretty easy for me so far, I have cut about 20 trees from my place so far and have about 200 left that need to come down and go to the mill. I helped out a tree trimming company by hauling 3 log truck loads of cottonwood/aspen hybrid from their site for them. I ran into a nieghbor logging down the road and he let me go through his log deck and hand pick the logs I wanted and I was able to buy those for the price the mill is paying, I managed to get 1,500 brd feet of Doug fir and 1,500 brd feet of white fir there. I just got a line on 75- 15 to 22 inch aspens that my brother in law wants me to remove from his horse pasture.
I figured with how easily available logs are for me and how much happen to have I should go ahead and setup the mill well and get set up to produce good quality wood. Then I figured I would this site or others and fill in the many knowleage gaps.

New member here who are going to try uploading a couple of pictures of my little collection.
It seems most people enjoy pictures, i know i do, so here goes.
Pic of my mill, the weather turned to winter about a week ago, and it is pretty cold right now.
I think i got the hang on this picture posting thing, so i´ll try a couple more.

second pic is the sawmill with a cab i will try to hook up the controls to under the winter.
Behind the mill you also can see the log deck.
That looks like quite the mill you have there.Must have an employee or two? Nice support equipment.
Thank you, thecfarm.
Well, no actually this is a hobby of mine, no employees.
I am a owner/operator truck driver for a living and i built this sawmill about twelve years ago when i decided i needed another hobby, instead of dragracing.
I did a little sawing back then for couple of years, but then i started this trucking business and didnt have time to do any sawmilling for a number of years, so a friend of mine borrowed it during this period.
But then last winter i decided to try to get this thing going again, since i needed a little lumber myself, and also do some modifications, more hydraulics, and a better log deck for example.
Anyway, its nice to have it back and running again, and, its was also nice to run across this forum, from whitch i already have got a lot of good information, so, thank you all, and i hope you dont have to much problem with my writing, since english is not my own language.
welcome Stefan that's a great collection , but it's to cold for my warm blood . I'm use to no snow , well maybe no more than 12 inches a winter .
stefan,I kinda hate to show you a picture of my "hobby" mill. Kinda small compared to yours and no big loaders to help out either. ;D

Hello and Welcome to the Forestry Forum, leot.
That is some nice old iron. Now start a thread and tell us where you are and a bit about yourself. :)
I agree with Magicman on the welcome and starting another post.
dblair...nice setup you have, but I couldn't help but notice the truly magnificent stand of timber in the backgound. Yours? if so, why are they still standing? Chainsaw broke?
;)
they are not big enough for me yet and neighbors donate trees all the time . I really don't need but a few this is a hobby mill , just enough lumber to keep the buildings in repair.

When I read Iron Inventory I think of all the special treats found in logs over the years.
Hi everyone, first of all i'm a new member to this site and i just want to say hello to all the kind folks on here. anyway sawmills is what led me to becoming a member of this forum. long story short I've been in the tree care industry basically all my life and have been running a small company with my dad; and through that we have recently began re-purposing the logs we get by milling them and building furniture of all sorts. however (and this is where the mill comes in at) we have been limited to having to hire others to mill our logs or using our trust worthy Alaskan with a stihl ms 66 powering it. which works well but is a real workout. so we are looking for a mill to purchase, and believe that we have it limited to several options; which are the EZ boardwalk model 40, and the Hud-son homesteader hfe 36... but we are definitely leaning more toured the EZ ... anyway as i said before I'm new to here and I'm sure there is many good posts on here in regard to this subject than i have been able to find so if anyone could point me in the right direction i would appreciate it very much. Thank you everyone for reading and i look forward to hearing and chatting with many fine knowledgeable people here- JW
welcome to the Forestry Forum , enjoy there's a wealth of knowledge on this site .

Jwalsh2489,there are some threads about the EZ mill. I don't really know about how many on the 40. Play around with the search and see what happens. Start a thread if you want. Maybe a new member that has looked at both since the threads too. Let us know how much you will be using it,what you think you will be sawing, will you saw for others too. Will you try to make some money with it. I have no idea about the Hudson mill. Some members have them.
JSwigga,if you get that Timberking you will have the best of both worlds. Been sawing long? Where's all the big logs coming from? What's all the lumber being used for?

I've only been sawing for 3 years. Caught the bug from my father. We rent a lt35 now but last year we had the guy here over 20 times. Thats why I want the timberking. We get logs from all over. My dad just retired and pretty much spends all his time on log hunts.
Been a member a long time. I finally bought a Norwood Lumber Mate 2000 from an older fellow last fall. It was a long time a comin' but I got a good buy on the mill with 30 bands, a sharpener, setter on a trailer and it's paid for lock stock and barrel.

I have a M-14 Belsaw with 46" insert tooth saw, on steel frame, pto drive, standard belt feed and manual setworks, and electric drive sawdust drag chain. I have a 263 MF 4wd tractor with FEL (bucket and forks) that i use on the mill some and everything else around the farm. I also run the mill with a JD B when i am only sawing small stuff.
hi evry one i got chaainsaw mill an TAschmid bandmill an 555b ford back hoe to handle the logs f700 ford dump truck
welcome to the forum , give us some pictures of your mill when your ready.
Baker head, homemade tracks, feed works with cable drive, up/down old windshield wiper motor, trailer with overhead winch, Husq. chainsaw, F350, 7.3, homemade log cart, kawasaki 700 4wd, several axes and can't hooks, 13 year old that runs it as good as me, and 1 chihuahua that goes to every job. In shop; Woodmaster planer, old table saw, jointer, router, 55 gal. drum vacuum, DeWalt chop saw, and many DeWalt hand tools.
After retiring I wanted to do something to make a few bucks and enjoy it at the same time. I had many ideas but always came back to buying a sawmill. But what kind? After about 7 months of research and convincing my wife I settled on the Lucas 10/30; I could not be happier. I took it slow and after practicing on my own logs for 4 months I'm now fairly proficient. I had my big (106') long old bank barn torn down and after getting the bank (dirt and stone) removed and leveled (see pic)
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/31129/photo_28229.JPG) I hope to get new barn built with a smaller 24/40 sawmill building plus a drying barn. It's slow as I'm doing as much by myself and truly enjoying the journey.
How's that backhoe working out for you? Seem like you broke your arm??? or something that held you back. Glad to hear that things are working out for you.
Hi Cfarm; with the new engine the 555 is up to the challenge. I had a set of CTI forks installed and there is no log it cannot move. I probably have a thousand yards of dirt and stone to move yet with it to make way for the new barn.
I fell on Ice Jan 25th and landed on my hip knocking my back out. After 5 dr appointments and over 2 months of hoping, I found out I have 2 bulged discs and 1 herniated disc with tear and a cyst on L5. PT started 2 weeks ago and they are doing decompression on my spine. I'm moving slow but sure and working some. I can't tell the PT otherwise he gets mad. All he wants me to do is rest (AAAGGGHHH) I just can't do that, it drives me crazy!

I'm finally signed up and in to the forum. I have been reading quite a lot and enjoying what I find. It's very helpful, and a good way to pass the dark evening hours.
I mill on a foley bellsaw M14 I bought from my 84 year old neighbor and just got running again last weekend.
Quick question- where can I look to find production numbers on my mill and how can I determine from those numbers, if I can find them, what year my mill was produced? I'm curious to know. All my equipment's old. I'd just like to know how old.
Thanks
Jay
Good morning. My first post ever on any site. I have a old 1985 wm-30. i have built a log clamp like the WM70. and to many more add-ons. I am now building a log turner with 3 chain driven flip ams. Next will be 12volt power, with new type design guide wheel arm on idler side of my WM30, hate to walk around all the time to adjust it. I also have a bell-saw that is now all hydraulic on drive and log lifer/ tuner ,with log dogs and set works to be done next, got all the parts just need time. I also put a duzts diesel , builtin saw conveyor and on and on.

I have a Foley Belsaw. Any more info about such would be appreciated. I bought it off my 84 year old neighbor.

Would you put that pic in your gallery for us? thanks
If doing that is a mystery, then go to the "Behind the Forum" board under "Home", and the first thread in there will give a good primer on how.
Uploaded all the pics to this site in album "Dustyjay." Can't figure how to make a sub album, and pics are in no particular order, but they are there.
I saw them in your album, horses and all. This will do it.
I like to go to whatever post or start a new topic first to include a picture.Go to your gallery,it will open in a new window.Click onto your album, then click onto whatever picture you want,it will get bigger, than scroll down a little to find,Insert Image In Post, click onto that, click Yes and that is it. Some have to copy/paste the link to work.I like to hit the enter key at least once or twice to move the picture down away from what I am typing. The enter key really helps to leave some white space if posting more than one picture. Somewheres I think it says to add 10,000 to your user number or something like that to make a clickable icon to your gallery under your user name. Use the preview button to see how it looks and modify it if needed.

Looking to see what folks are running. Feel free to add your mill to the inventory list. More than one mill? No problem. You have multiple votes.
I am looking to buy a small saw mill with a electric motor. I will only be sawing small 9 ft logs for lumber. I have all the logs I need to saw up. I have a bundle firewood business. The logs I have I been turning them in to firewood. I was thinking about squaring the center up and selling the slabs for bundled firewood. I do very well with my bundled firewood business. I had two red oak logs 32 inch by ten ft same size on both ends. The yard offered me $27.00 a piece I cut them up and sold them for bundled firewood and made $1800.00 basically I am looking to get in to the lumber in a small way need info the you
i had an LT15 but needed portable so found a 2010 lt28 so i'll be running that in spring or went it warms up some

Its sure a big step up from my Hudson oscar 228 i have been sawing on for the last 7 or 8 years. Do you saw full time ?
sandsawmill14,
No, I'm not full-time. I am retired and most of my work is on the road. Almost exclusively hardwoods, my clients may have from 1 to 20 logs. Your 8500 bf week is a good month for me. I cover more than 18,000 square miles. As far as I know, I am the only actively mobile, portable sawmill within 50 miles.

Brand new LT35 hydraulic. Support equipment includes Sthil 440 chainsaw, 650 Kawasaki 4 wheeler with homemade logging arch (Christmas gift from my wife several years back - she was afraid I'd kill myself pulling too large logs down our steep hills without one). Going to have to get something bigger and heavier and not enough weight to pull a very big log.

The owner is a close family friend, so running the mill is one of the things I hope to continue doing even after he is no longer my primary employer. And I'm collecting logs from my farm to mill once I get a good load skidded out.

I found a Lap sider and a Lathe-Mizer within striking range on Craigslist. Of course, I haven't used either yet.
I had an LT30 with a winch when I still had a 5th lumbar disc.
I have two living Cub Cadet 7000 series 30HP tractors and one dead one, and a 41HP LS tractor.
Here is one of the Cubs with the log forks I built on it, and the LS with a fork lift. I had to get out the second tractor after I got the first one stuck in a precarious position with a log on the forks.
I tied the Cub to a tree to pull out the 155 foot Douglas fir with this winch. I hung a block 15 feet up a tree and a block on the end of the log and barely got it done by doubling the pull.

Hello Keith Shirley and Welcome to the Forestry Forum. :)
Hello,
I have been reading on here for the last few weeks since I found this forum while reading up on building a band saw mill.
I guess you can add me to the list as well. It might be some time before I would be counted as running this new to me old Belsaw M14.
A long time friend died 10yrs ago and his mill sat since his death. I only recently thought about going to see if it was still there. In talking with another fellow that I know, I found out that he had bought it about 6 months ago and then resold it a month or so later. I was sad to find out that I had missed out on the chance to get it from him. So, back to the plan of trying to build a band saw mill from scratch. Within a few days of finding out the old mill was gone I was looking thru the Ga. Market Bulletin and found and ad for a Belsaw m14. Called and left my number. When the guy called me back, we got to talking about how he had gotten the mill and a bit of history. Come to find out he was the same guy that had bought the mill from my friend about 5 months ago.
Boy what a small world.
So, I couldn't pass up the chance to get it and have a piece of something that belonged to my old friend.
After a 5 hr round trip I have it home and now will spend about the next 6 months building a new steel 60 ft frame and get it under roof.

Dieseltim
Hello and Welcome to the Forestry Forum, Dieseltim.
Welcome to the Forestry Forum, Tim.
Good to hear you got the mill that you were originally after!
1956 Corley lefty # 8 Mine has a 605 Minnie LP w/Rockford clutch 2 blade edger all was new in '56 has been mine since '87 in the family since '68.
for the curious a #8 has - 8" collar - 8" serpentine (Flat) belt feed - 8" wheels on carriage 40"(44"maybe?) plus opening on head blocks - power receding double acting set works - 2&15/16 Mandrel (Left hand has 4 Corley bearings and is 20? Ft long) I only Have 2 head blocks and wish I had three (3) (Will post that wanted thing someday) It is fed with a drum driven off the belt feed with a 1/2" cable standard for Corley and so many others in those days. I have not sawed since 1993 but someday again I hope. It is still all on wood and the carriage needs serious help.

Sounds like a fun mill to get going again. What happened that it's been since '93 ? just curious....
Welcome to the Forestry Forum, TRTermite. I see that you have been a FF member for over a year. You have been mighty quiet. ;D

Added some new and used equipment too our operation. Extended the TK B-20 to a 30' capabilitie.
Picked up a 2003 1044 IR all terrain far reach fork also known as a(Telehandler).
The big investment was a Hud-son 60 Band sawmill to cut wide and long. 56" wide and 37'long.

Lookin' good!
Now you're sawing!!
This is my '87 Woodmizer LT-40 manual mill. My dad bought it new but it hasn't been used much with only about 150 hrs on the clock. The paint is a little faded because he left it ouside for quite a while....too bad because it would look new otherwise.

I've made a few modifications....Raised the deck rails 2" so that I can cut within 1" of the bottom and made outriggers that slide into them to make a place to lay cut lumber.

We have 4 mills now. First one was a custom Alaskan mill using a Husky 2100 featuring a 34" cut width.
We bought an old Sears Roebuck circle mill and have been using it as a parts mill.
Last fall we picked up a Belsaw M14 featuring a 42" saw and a Datsun L20B for power. It popped our circle mill cherry, and now we're bit by the sawdust bug hard.
A couple weeks ago we found basically the exact mill we originally wanted. It has a 46" saw, a full hydraulic carriage and feedworks, hydraulic log roller, outfeed conveyor and divertor, and a sawdust blower. It came with a 4-71 for power. In the deal we also picked up a Beaver 49 planer that we will power with a Perkins 6-354. Thinking we should be done collecting mills now! Ha ha.

It's great to see all these new names here on the Forestry Forum, Welcome to all of you!
Thanks Chuck! I forgot to include a photo of me picking the mill up at the dealer in East Texas. Only thing I find wrong with the WM is the orange paint. It doesn't match my truck!
Ok, how do you upload a photo to a post from your computer?

First post on this forum. I just picked up my new 2018 Timberking 2500 mill last week. I had used a Timberking 2000 for the past 7 years and a Timberking B-20 briefly before that.
When the logs get really big, I use my Stihl MS880 with a Granberg Alaskan 72" Mill.

First Post:
I've been reading all that the Forestry Forums has had to offer for the last two years. I hope that what I have gleaned from my studies here will add to my success. We are due to pick up our Woodmizer on October 6. First time sawyers here, so we went with the LT50HDD35W-RA with all her bells and whistles. I would like to start a modest business with my grandson that he can take over when I'm no longer productive :D Thanks for all the hours of enjoyment reading your adventures. I look forward to sharing some of our own.

I run a woodmizer LT15 start mill, extra set of bed. I designed a mechanized feed system using #40 roller chain, fixed and idler sprockets, 1 HP AC electric motor, gear reducer, and reversible drum switch. I can vary speed by using step pulleys if needed. This really saved on time and effort.
Had to rethink the ac motor thing, they could not handle the duty cycle of constant start stop forward/reverse. Thermal breakers would kick in about after 30 minutes. Got a good deal on 3/4 Dayton dc with speed control forward reverse etc. I designed a toothed cog and lift system so I can engage or can free the head and use it manually. This comes in handy when I want to see how the blade FEELS, like say its feeling dull, or short in the tooth or just plain board!!
Bought a Timbery M100 with (9 1/2)HP motor April 2018 new to mill
I have an LT40HD on order, should be here in a couple weeks. I have used an old LT30 in the past.
I have never owned or used a sawmill, but have wanted one for many years. I finally ordered my choice of mills- a Cook's AC 36 with 69 horsepower diesel, sharpener, setter, and band roller. Hope I can make a few bucks with it.

Cook's makes cant hooks and is including one along with 60 blades and other goodies in the package. If it doesn't meet expectations, I will certainly buy a Logrite!
I recently built a homemade 36" capacity bandmill(still working the bugs out) It's powered by a (don't laugh) a 22 horse power predator engine. It has torsion axles so you can remove the wheels and make it stationary.

welcome @rm snipe (http://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=46462) ! My wife and I spent a week in Tasmania nearly 30 years ago now. Wonderful place, so much diversity in ecosystems from N to S. Central Tasmania reminds me of my own backyard, rolling hills and lots of apple trees. We even ran into a native of my home state living in Launceston, funny things you run into traveling.
Send some more posts on what you're cutting, forest there, etc.
Gave it a quick 1st try this arvo before rain set in again, couple 200x30 off the top while getting hang of it then vertical 150x30 to replace the truck tray. Timber is white gum felled at least 5yr ago. Im happy with machine can't wait till weather brightens up so I can get stuck in.
Yes nativewolf Tassie is a beautiful place to exist people born here don't appreciate it enough.

Have the other mill nearly completely built now. The roof is in and tinned, the Detroit is fitted and nearly ready to run. I’ve been running it since June off a PTO.
The Coutts features a sawdust conveyor, top saw, heavy (for a softwood mill) carriage with cant kick off, chain turner, 6” Coutts gangsaw, A hydraulic infeed and an outfeed conveyor. It’s built as a portable, everything fold up to legal widths and lengths.
The other mill is custom built, has a 50ft outfeed conveyor with two Arkansas sorters, a bar turner, and a hydraulic Coutts carriage. I’m running a 4-71 for power on it.
I have to ask..what's a arkansas sorter ???... pic's?

1920's Enterprise circle sawmill
60" circular saw: Hyd. carriage and feed. Best Hyd. log turner I've ever seen. Hyd. out feed rollers. Sawdust blower. 671 GM diesel. Large capacity live deck (Hyd.) 3 blade edger. 24' max cut. It's mobile, folds up nicely. Hyd. steering on duel rear axles which helps as it's approx 50' long. Tank/water set up for cooling water to center of saw blade at mandril. Many (old) trucks and various (old) CAT D6s and D8s. Pictures when I finish setting it back up.
Maho Supermill with hydraulic log dogs.
Frontier OS27
Husky 395xp with 48" chainsaw mill
Woodmizer Lt15 for some fine cutting. I also have a old friction feed carriage circular sawmill in restoration mode that I have yet been able to identify the brand.
Hudson Oscar 18 and I just purchased a Hudson HFE36 that I put on my own self built trailer that has Hydraulic dogs, backstops, loader and log turners.
loaning a friends HF mill. Fixed and lubed all the screws, putting in double ball valves for lubrication drip, idler for wider cutting. OH maybe he should have bought something a tad more expensive. Yeah.
Well at the original $1500 it really was a bargain overall.
I got a bunch of used angle iron and am making more track too.
Have a home garage TF project to make. Just dropped 6 24" x 24' oak logs from trees on the property.
Going to be a fun year doing something new and different!
Trakmet TTP 600 mobile with a wide head and a Stihl 880 60" Alaskan set up.
Ye olde Woodland Mills HM130Max.
Wood-Mizer LX55 w/14hp and 1 bed extension. I was pleasantly surprised to find at up to 2" thick it will cut a full 24" wide vs. the advertised 22" wide. The guides are touching or nearly on both sides at this width so it better be pretty straight or it's quickly a PITA to deal with.
Frontier OS23, support equipment two arm on a cant hook, husqvarna 450, double bit axe.
KJB, welcome to the forum.
I like to ask, what's all the lumber going to be used for?
Fair warning...get the tissues ready for a sad story. When I was about 8 years old maybe 9 my dad and granddad went into business together and bought a dozer, 2 log trucks, dump truck, tractor, numerous chainsaws, all the necessary hand tools for logging and a circular mill with a 6' blade, 3' cut-off saw and edger for boards up to 24" wide and 6" thick. So I grew up logging and working on the mill. As time went on and all the boys got other jobs and granddad to feeble to do much and dad was working a job and the mill work became a side hustle for extra $$ when one of us wanted to put in some effort or needed some lumber for a project. When I was around 32 I took a job that put me over the road and worked it a couple years and decided it was enough. When I came back the mill and all the equipment was gone. I was heart broken. I questioned my dad and he said my brother and cousin kept coming to the mill drunk and running the mill and he was afraid one or both would fall into the blade while it was running so he gave the mill away. I said dad why didn't you tell me, I could've came back and put a stop to it even if I had to adjust the valves or something so the motor wouldn't run. They would have given up and left it alone because neither one can mechanic. He said "I never thought of it or I would have. I was just so worried about the boys." Gotta love him for it though because the mill or money wasn't even in his thought process The only good part is they both gave up the sauce but the mill is gone. Thankfully I have been able to collect a few pieces of equipment over the years before my own health went down hill but enough to keep me busy without too much strain-n-pain. You never know what time will unfold throughout our lifetime but all we can do about it is to accept and and move forward. Thanks everybody for letting me vent a little.
