Brakes work fine once they grab but it takes a few seconds after stepping on them for them to grab.. Is there a way to bleed them,if so,anyone know where the bleeder is located? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

On the 540A there are 4 bleed screws, one for each side. They are located in the diff, about 6" from the center, to the left and to the right. It's a good idea to bleed them more than just to get rid of the bubbles, the oil is trapped in the brakelines and is probably decades old. so bleed them good until fresh oil comes out. It's a two person job

FYI, this may be of help, google the free " John Deere - Parts Catalog " , look for this

  • John Deere - Parts Catalog
    jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.parts...
Search the John Deere parts catalog by model, equipment, or catalog number
  • Enter 540 as the model #. pick the catalog for your machine.

They probably are. There's some difference between early and late 540b but that's mostly just in the steering cylinders and valve.

Thanks fellas I found it on the Jd parts catalog,I'm assuming the bleed valve is in the same place on both diff as it only showed it on one image in the catalog.. Now to figure out exactly how the bleeding process works!? Thanks again!

Yeah same spot on the diffs but the bleeders are facing back on the back and front on front. Trig the wheels start the machine take the shifter out of park get someone you trust to step on the peddle crack the bleeder!
