Wondering if I can leave cylinder in machine and just unbolt/remove gland with rod and packing to repack it.  Seems easier than digging whole thing out.  Anyone have luck doing it that way??  It's a 240a

I have done it before on my 225 never tried it on my 240 but I don't believe it is much different

I know it can be done on a 380 as well. Go for it

Let us know how you make out. A few pictures of the inside of the cylinder would be nice. I need to do the same and I am not sure how hard it is to get it back together? I thought one needed a press but I guess not if it can be done with the cylinder on the machine?

I don't think that you need a press for a cylinder assembly/ disassembly. sometimes they're hard to get apart because of the old seals. What i most find challenging is the nut or security devices on the cylinderpiston (the head on the rods end where the seals go, i can't remember the correct word in english), they are sometimes a pain to open

No press but a long bar to put though the hole on the cylinder and a 3/4 drive impact will do it on the tj skidder. Teakwood gland is the word you are looking for I believe

Ok. Thanks for the info, folks. I am a little less shy to start the job now.

Did it just a while back on a 225 ,like was said the 240 should be just as easy. the retaining ring that held it all in the tube was the hardiest thing for me .

Maine logger88

Yeah that ring can be miserable sometimes.

Got 'er done today. Ended up yanking whole ram out.  Could not see well enough in machine to get the snap ring out-decided to go deep and pull whole thing guts, feathers and all.  Good thing because one hose was pretty worn.  Once out repacking is piece of cake.  Took 45 min and good as new.  I think getting new packings into cylinder in the machine would be pretty tough.  I may be singing a different tune putting it back in but so be it.
