Got a call from the state of NH to cut some beams for them to fix the bridge.
It was built in 1876. Some guy in a cement truck, Ya, a 10 wheeler.  ::)
thought he could go on it. Posted for 3-ton limit.
Built by Charles Austin Broughton and son.
They had a big dairy farm during the Civil War. He was a sergeant in the 18th regiment of the NH Company E.
This is a dream job for A&P Sawmill. The place to go to get lumber for all the covered bridge in NH.

I suppose hemlock will be used?
I googled it and I've been across that bridge a few times.

Congratulations ! I live in that area and drove by the scene in Jackson right after it happened.

Pretty hard to believe. A 58 year old driver who had worked for the company 15 years. Just can't imagine what caused him to make that choice. There is a turn off the main road ( Route 16) about 60 feet from the bridge and there is another road to avoid the bridge 1/2 mile further north.

They just repaired the other end of that bridge about a month ago. A younger person was texting, hit the upright on one side and rolled the car.

I'm sure there are lots of competent truck drivers out there, but the other 80% make them look bad.

Although I've never met a cement truck driver that had any fear of driving anywhere.

Some good pictures here

What I'm asked to do is resaw some Dug, fir that the DOT has in its inventory. I guess they have a bunch of it to fix bridges in the state.
Just a good chance to show what A&P sawmill can do for them.
We do have 50' of LT 40 supper under a roof.

Tomorow or Mon I have 50- 6"x12" Chestnut beams of different lengths coming up from Boston to be resawed 6/4 for the ceiling in high-end condos.
I'll put up some pics when I can. The jobs are by the hr plus blades.

They brought me a pice if D. fur to look at. It was some kind of pressure treated stuff that was in a vacuum then treated under pressure. I don't think I can cut it. It dulled the chainsaw in one cut.
[ A pice they cut off a beam to show me ]
They called back and are going with my hemlock if the engineers say it's ok.
There's a push to keep the bridge original.  A lot of it is Chestnut, But, there's no more of that around here.

Jeff, this page is wide, have to push it across the screen to read, Can you fix it?

It was wide because someone posted a link to offsite images that is not allowed. Removal of the link should have fixed it.

Probably make the paper either way. and it is definitely kool to be part of history like that.

Thats a really fun job and should be very good for business.  Sounds like a good subject for another local news article.
YellowHammerisms:

Take steps to save steps.

If it won't roll, its not a log; it's still a tree.  Sawmills cut logs, not trees.

Kiln drying wood: When the cookies are burned, they're burned, and you can't fix them.

Sawing is fun for the first couple million boards.

Peter must be hard at it... we haven't heard from him in a while.
The bridge is waiting.
If you look carefully, you can see a sprinkler system.
