Has anyone else had the dubious honor of replacing the belt on the autoclutch?

My old belt was in very bad shape and I thought it would be a good idea to put a fresh one on.  I know better, IF IT AIN'T BROKE, DON'T FIX IT!

Tried four places before I found a 3L140 belt, yep just 14 inches around and 3/8" wide.  I took the motor loose and still had to fight to get the old belt off, but that was the easy part.

I fought and almost gave up twice before getting the new belt installed.  When I installed the nuts to hold the motor in place it stretched the belt even tighter.

I turned on the key and ran the autoclutch, It was very slow going up.  The second time it stopped halfway up.  I reset the breaker and now the autoclutch doesn't work. I am afraid that I bent the motor armature because the belt is so tight.

You can see how the belt is so tight in the motor pulley that it is deformed.  The motor is all the way against the stops on adjustment.

I will get the multimeter out in the morning and chase down the problem for certain. If I have damaged the motor, I will be getting a belt that is at least an inch longer before replacing it.

Hopefully it's the same belt.  Maybe shoulda just got it from WM to be sure.

The belt that came off still had the 3L140 on it, woodmizer says it is a 3L140 in the parts book.

Right but you can't go get any old B56 or B57 and stick them on your bandmills they have to be a certain one I'm just saying that just because the numbers work don't make it right.  I'd almost try a diff brand belt, but that's just me.

Either I wasn't the only one with problems or they made changes in the autoclutch unit, in 2001 they spec a 3L140.  I will be replacing this one with a 3L150, I am just hoping I haven't destroyed the motor in the process.
That would be an expensive belt replacement.

I really hope that's not the case.  Very frustrating I'm sure.

Update,  The motor has bit the dust,  The magnets are all loose inside the housing.  If I could figure out just where they belong, could probably epoxy them back in place.

Got one on order, but Mt. Vernon doesn't know if they have one,(Will is gone till Wednesday), so I cannot run an hour up the road and get one. Indy said they show none in stock, but he marked it urgent so I get one as soon as they do.  This is my week for luck, all bad.

I will not go to any casinos this week.

If the magnets are broken in many pieces you cant fix it. You can discard
small pieces but if the magnets are broken in large chunks then it will change
the poles. If you open it up and the magnets just came unglued then just slide
out one at a time and JB-weld it and slid it back in.

We now use a 3L150 belt. It allows for easier installation and puts less stress on the gearbox and motor shaft.

I kinda guessed that much, I ordered a 15 inch belt with the new motor and pulley.

I wonder why Napa didn't know that lol lol

If I would have realized how tight a 14" belt was, I would have ordered a 15".  Napa doesn't stock anything  under 20", so I ended up at O'Reilly's who could get it overnight with no shipping charge.  Oh well, all water under the bridge at this point.  I just want to get the mill up and running again.  Hope Indy comes up with a motor pretty soon.

The magnets are not broken, they just came unglued.  I will try the JB-Weld on them.  If nothing else, I will have a backup for the future.

Is that the same motor as the dragback and blade guide in or out? I may have a spare new one and I am sure I have a couple used ones you can rob parts from if you want. I am only about 30 minutes from you. Fred up the road from you might have a spare as well?

I pickup 4-5 winches out of our local junkyard every year. 90% of
them only need the magnets glued back in. It seem like moisture
gets in between the case and the magnets and the glue comes loose.
I use wide mouth vise grips and glue one magnet at a time. I never
had one come loose again after using JB-weld. Do not use JB-quick
for it's no good.

The one on my mill looks like the same motor as the 94 originally used on the up/down. I have a few of them.

This is a Leeson made for woodmizer motor.

The notes in the parts book read "Motor kit revised 10/01. Leeson motor 016707 replaces Lesson motor 034001 (12/00) and Owosso motor P12093 originally supplied."

If those motors match any of those numbers, Paul, I would gladly take loan of one, if my glue job doesn't work.

Thanks

1 of my motors match the last number you gave. All three motors I have were replacements for the same thing so I think that we might even find one that works.

Glue job is holding for now. autoclutch now works, so I am back in business.  Will trade it out with the new one when Indy finds one to send me.

Thanks to all.
