I've read that a 13/64 file can be used instead of 3/16 on stihl rs chains. I understand the concept, just wondering how it works out in wood?

Do you mean 23RS (.325) chain or 33RS (3/8") chain?

Ok .....now I think you got your files sizes backwards. You mean to say "I read that a 3/16" file can be used instead of 13/64" on Stihl 33RS  chains.

So to answer your question yes it can be done with a 3/16" file and the smaller diameter 5/32" can also be used.
Only trouble is a leftover ledge in the cutter's side plate will be produced as the cutter is filed back. So it would need to be filed out in a second step process.

Sorry, 26RS chain. Stihl recommends a 3/16 file for them but I've heard they cut faster with a 13/64 file job. So my question is, has anyone reprofiled a chain from 3/16 to 13/64 and was it noticeably better?

I'll try and help you out here thutch85,
Yes a larger 13/64" file will make the .325 26RS hungry. Bigger gullet able to offer more chip clearance and chip flow.
But just to get a 13/64" file started and to fit in a new 26RS chain may take a little filing against the depth gauge.

With my .050 23RS chain I run on my 562XP and MS261CM ll I use a 5mm file.
5mm is the diameter size between the 3/16" and 13/64" files.
I then switch to the smaller 3/16" file when my cutters are getting down to under half length.

Thanks for the info. It's an older chain so I plan to change up some angles and use it for clearing white pine and rotten deadfall.

Any news on this? Just tried today, ran 2 tanks through a 261 and gotta say it definitely felt more aggressive.
