Title: STIHL O44 SAW
Post by: minesmoria on October 08, 2004, 05:26:44 PM
I have an used stihl 044 i dont know much about stihl saws as i have an husky 55

Is this a powerful saw good reliable saw.

what would be the best size bar to get, i was looking at 24 0r 20.

The 24" bar and chain cost 160cdn and 100 for the 20" bar and chain.

I would like the bigger bar but was going to get the 20" beacues of the price  difference, and i  mostly cut under 20" firewood any ways i would think it would cut faster with the smaller bar.

Also how do you remove the rim sproket for these saws, the husky saw i put rope in the pistion and it comes off, should i do this with the stihl as well?

How did you come upon the 044?

Yes it is powerful and reliable.

Your bar and chain price sounds high even if it is Canadian.  Maybe try an aftermarket source?

Either bar size will work fine.  If all your wood is under 20" then go with the 20" bar.

Sprocket changes are easy.  Use a screwdriver to pull the e-clip on the end of the crank.  You don't need to hold the motor.

Enjoy your new saw!    John

I put a new bar and chain on, and found out the oil does not get on the bar the chain had smoke coming out by the sproket.

Second after about 1 minute of use it seem to overheat
and shut off.

could this be form the chain not getting oil?

Hmm.  Sounds like a saw with some issues.  The saw won't shut off due to lack of bar lube... the bar and chain will be destroyed long before.  So you have two problems.  One is the oiler.  I you take the bar off, and rev up the saw, does oil come out the hole?

Second is why the saw shuts down.  How does it shut off?  What does it do.  You'll get a bunch of theories if you post a bit more info.

The saw overheats and shuts off the muffler and engine are very hot. It sounds like there is junk buildup in the carb side plate. My husky 55 saw did this exactly and there was saw chips in the side plate when the shop cleaned it out.

A little bit of oil comes out of the hole and just drips down but none what so ever gets on the bar i had smoke come for the sproket.

There's a worm gear that drives a pump plunger, the worm gear is driven by a spring that engages in a notch in the clutch drum.
It only works when the clutch is engaged.

My other saw overheated and shut off just like this one did, the shop took the carb off and there was saw chips in the side plate.

I tooke the saw in to the shop and they will find out whats the matter with it.

Howdy........there is a small hole in the bottom of the saw with an oiler adjustment screw. My 044 has been in the shop twice to clean the plugged  oiler. Also I use a 20", 24", and 28 inch bar depending on the size of the wood and the job . The 20" bar is a lot quicker to sharpen :)
