We called it "ringing the shell".

That was way back.....they started calling it "cut shells" in the 20's.

Don't think they would cycle through a pump or semi too good.

Would a  large monofilament line work as well ? or do you need the weight of the steel ?

I wonder what damage that plastic shell does to the barrel? It is not the slippery plastic like wads are made from. I'll stick to 00 buck.  :)

the only problem with cut shells is, being bigger than the shotguns bore they can cause it to blow up in your face according a gunsmith neighbor :-X :-X

Agreed, I would not fire one in a "full choke" barrel.

I would want a barrel that was open choked.

Now, I have fired 410's (that's my "around-the-house" squirrel getter) that have been reloaded unknown numbers of times and had them fire as cut-shells, but wouldn't do it on a regular or intentional basis.

Cut shells are illegal to possess during certain times while afield in Michigan as referenced in our hunting digest. Right along with buckshot and slugs.

Slugs and buckshot are illegal here as well, can't carry slugs unless its deer season, go ahead and carry a 45-70 or .50 BMG while squirrel hunting, but slugs, NO way! seems like some laws are just silly at best ???.
Not sure which came first, but I have chickens and eggs.
