While reading this FOOD! FOOD! FOOD! section, I got hungry and the wife is at the store getting groceries, kinda slim pickings in the cupboard / fridge.  So I rustled up a heaping bowl of dill pickle slices, slathered in A1 sauce, then buried in shredded sharp cheddar.

Pretty tasty!!!

What are some of your favorite snacks that aren't out of a box?

I'd rather be out at the mill, but it's raining...  so FOOD it is!
Always having a great day!

Maybe not that weird but I like tuna salad eaten with tortilla chips. Peanut butter (Crunchy of course) and apples and unsweetened iced tea. P'nut butter and prunes (That makes your system go crazy trying to figure what to do). P'nut butter and granola bars are good.

Fried fish, cheese grits and swamp cabbage (when available) but that is not a snack but a gourmet meal.

For just a quick "something" once in a while, I'll go for sliced onion on bread and butter with a little salt!

Later in the Spring, I'll substitute the onion with leeks!

The swamp cabbage must taste better than it smells when you bruise the plant along a marsh area!  :o

We have TONS of skunk cabbage in our flood plain along our river...  I can't imagine eating it!!!  but how do you cook it...  I don't think my wife would let it in the house, let alone her kitchen...  LOL  Just thinking about it makes my eyes water...   :'(

I don't know that I ever saw and I never knowingly ate a skunk cabbage. What I am talking about is heart of sable palm. It was commonly eaten by people in central and, I assume, south Fla. You peel the heart back and cut off the tender bud till it starts to get tough then you stop, peel off another boot or two and repeat till you get to the small center. If you cut off too much of the tough part it gets bitter because of the quinine in it. I have read that is why Seminole Indians did not get malaria because they ate swamp cabbage as part of their staple diet and the quinine was an adequate cure. (More likely we did not have the right mosquito vector in the area or infected people to spread it from). My grandmother used to add a tablespoon full of sugar to help counteract the bitter. It is something of an acquired taste. Warning to first time eaters to eat in moderation - it is extremely high in fiber and an excellent natural laxative.
The perfect height to cut is about 3' tall so you can cut it off at ground level. I think the heart is the same size in a 3' or a 80' palm, its just more work to cut down a big palm to get to the heart.
You can eat it raw in a salad or by itself. Pull the heart of of a small palmetto plant and chew the white bud for the same taste. It is/was typically boiled like green cabbage with meat or bacon grease for seasoning. The best imho is to fry enough bacon to grease the cast or old thin iron skillet, add the chopped up cabbage and cook over medium to high heat till soft. Adding and browning a pack of good cross-cut/cubed beef hot dogs before adding the cabbage is also good (as it is when frying green cabbage). Cornbread on the side is a wise decision.
