what do you guys use to put under the puller point to take the out side bearing off so you don't mess the inside of the hole up where the little u cup goes

Have not had to do that particular repair yet, but would probably turn up some sort of 'push pad' on the lathe.
With a 'stud' to keep it centered in the critical hole, and a small pocket on the opposite side to center the puller screw.

 I used a chisel behind it and just tapped on it till it came loose.

I use a flat plate mostly but didn't know if any one had a better rig
