This year the sawing project is on April 5th and 6th. Gene (AKA the Wood Doc) will be teaching a class on DH kilns on the 5th. There is a strong chance of some minor cost on this one for print outs and such, maybe $20.00 or so just to cover cost. Not sure just yet as some of it y'all might be able to download and save everyone trouble. You will need to bring some comfortable chairs for this class. If Gene or myself are providing the print outs we will need an accurate count on how many. On the 6th we can do another quartersawing demo or if there is some things that y'all would like to see demonstrated feel free to ask. Keep in mind that Danny and I have to be able to dry and sell the wood to offset some of the cost of this thing. The kiln class will need to be on a schedule to get all points covered. I will leave that up to Gene to set the times on that. As always when it comes to the sawing we set the start time at 8:30 and fly by the seat of our britches the rest of the day. There is a new Cantek 30" double surface planer that I'm sure some will want to see run. Look forward to seeing everyone. Lets keep a head count as we go and note if you are coming for both days or just one. The address is
1607 Capps Browning Rd.
Rentz, GA. 31075
I make 1 and will be there for both days.
I am interested in comming, but will need to make a decision closer to the date as it is in the middle of Maple Syrup season for me.
I hate to miss it but I'll be working. :'(
I make 2,
wouldn't miss it,
Tom and Jillane, makes 4.
(She won't be attending any training :P, but its a 2 day drive each way and we'll take a side trip to NC for her.)
It goes without saying I'll be there, both days. I make 5.
I will be there. 6
Put Wild Bill and I down for 2 more.
8
I am heading down for both days make it 9. Would be happy to pay for printed material over download, seems I can never find information again that way.
I'll be there both days. I make 10
I'll be 11. I will arrive Friday afternoon so no class for me.
No class for us either.
I will be there with the cook so that makes 13 . Sign me up for doc's class .
I am working on my april schedule. I hope I can come. Any further info for us newbies.
Martha and I will be there, so 14 and 15. Really looking forward to it.
I need all the class ;D I can get, so count me in. Martha will hang out on the porch with Tammy and friends.
She says she knows the most important part of kiln drying anyway, and that is when I mess up some wood, for her to leave me alone as I unstack the bundle and start saying "Daddy Words". :D
I said some "Daddy Words" last week. It involved pecan smiley_devil.
I make 16. Looking forward to seeing old friends and making new ones.
i'm hopeful I will make it. i'll confirm soon.
18 and 19 brother and I are looking forward to all. Is there 5thwheel camper room?
16 20 and 17 21. I always have a good time.
Looks like the count is off.
I'm checking if the wife would like to ride along so I will confirm then.
I don't feel like pulling my 5th wheel that far although I may change my mind... Any hotel recommendations?
There are hotels a few miles north of Jake's place near the interstate.
Gas and diesel are also available. Who would have thought that someone could put gasoline into a diesel tank?
Rumor has it there are some nice dresses to be had in the area too.
What size do you wear SS?!!! smiley_hairbow
Oh my good Doctor - it appears you have not seen the famous photo - perhaps @Magicman (http://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=10011) will be kind enough to post it here.
There is a LaQuinta which was OK, but the Fairfield was brand new. Jakes place is about 15 minutes away.

I say nothing. :-X
I will be coming with a friend The count got off on the last page, but I think I make 21 and 22.
It is somewhat slimming but a hazard around rotational equipment. Who is that kind gent who is clearly in touch with his ... ax women side. lol. no offense and my apologies, to ax women everywhere.
That would be none other than Sir Goat - AKA @POSTON WIDEHEAD (http://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=14625) himself. Bout time he made an appearance here.

That's Aramix chainsaw skirt in't it? Or is it kevlar? Hard to tell. Either way, it is very fetching.

Us northerners do that lol...Last week when it was -24 and my backhoe was gelling up (even with kerosene mixture) I dumped some gas in the tank and let it idle ...boy that cleared it right up. 5% saw gas worked good. Use saw gas so the oil helps the injector pump stay lubed. But alot of truckers round here when they fill up will dump gas right in with the diesel to prevent gelling it works slicker than [I have typed a profane word that is automatically changed by the forum censored words program I should know better]
There is room for a few campers. If we start getting several wanting to bring one we might need to coordinate which one goes where. There is several hotels 6 miles from my location. They are at the intersection of I16 and hwy. 441. Hampton Inn, La Quinta, Fairfield Inn, Motel 6, Super 8 and a few more that are escaping my memory right now.
Oh my.......Is it that time of year again?
I don't have a thing to wear.
Gotta get my hair fixed.
My hooves done.
So much to do.
Let me check with Kirk.
As your forestry forum friend I must tell you, that dress makes your butt look big...!!! :o

OK, lets hear the diesel/gas story. my wife askes if I want her to put gas in my truck, I tell her no it runs on diesel.
Looks like the nearest airport is Atlanta? I would need to get a rental car there and if anyone else is flying in, I'd be happy to split the car as the drive is about 2 hrs+. Is there anyplace to fish close to your place?
Any other info I might need to sway me to make a decision to come?
Rob
Guys I have taken time off at work with a few days before and after. I assume we are all invited. I have been trying to get a place for Gene Wengert to come and speak. I will prob. just drive down. Is there anything we need to bring other than our personal protective equipment ect. ,food, computer? Want to be a contributor, not just a consumer.
Not sure what the count is, but pencil me in please.
@GeneWengert-WoodDoc (http://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=20498)
I reviewed the post and I think I make 23. cut_tree
Rob there is a couple of ponds real close to me or the Occone River is a 15 miles away. Lake Sinclare is a hour North and the Atlantic Ocean is a little over 2 hours away. Atlanta airport and Savanna is about the same distance. Some times you can get a cheaper flight into Savanna even if you have to switch planes in Atlanta.
Doc Henderson if you are a member on the forum you are invited. When we get closer to it I will add a list of things folks can bring to help out. I don't like to put the list on to early as it gets buried and difficult for people to find.
Ill know for sure i will be there Saturday. I will have to check on my work about being there Friday. I think I will make 24. Thanks
Thanks CS. I have secured the time off from work, but that can occasionally change. I messaged Doc Gene and he says he will coordinate with you r.e. pdf of materials.
I will have handouts (you can print ahead of time, or you can get at the class...about $3 is my copy9ng cost).
I am thinking that the DH class will start about 8:30 Eastern Daylight Time on Friday.
Hi all
If scheduling works out I hope to be there.
Looking forward to meeting you K-guy.
Looks like my wife and I will be down for the weekend.
I will be attending Friday and Saturday.
She has mentioned checking out Dublin on Friday so she may only attend Saturday. And on Saturday, I'm pretty sure she will hang out with the ladies on the porch I guess.
For some reason she isn't nearly as interested in sawmills as me? :D
I believe that will make 25 and 26.
What do most people bring? Chairs, drinks, food?

As far as what to bring? I am bringing WDH this nice Tennessee crotch walnut log for Jake to slice up. And some of my home made jerky.
At this point, I am thinking that the drying class will begin at 8:30AM. I have arranged for everyone to get a free copy of Sawmill and Woodlot magazine. Also, Delmhorst will have some handouts and possibly a real nice door prize. Also, I think there will be several slightly used moisture meters as prizes. UC Coatings will have some free samples of B.O.S.S. And one of our own FF members, Barney67, has volunteered to do all the copying of the handouts as his way of saying "Thanks" for all the info shared here.
Good deal Gene, looking forward to all of this, appreciate your efforts,
sounds great, Thanks Doc Gene and CS. Looking forward to it.
I'm in both days. #27 I think.
Sounds great Gene. I do have a printer in my office too if we need it that day. Since I just bought another Delmhorst meter yesterday I think I should qualify for some kind of door prize.
Was the old meter bad?
WDH
No just misbehaving. :D
I've got Delmhorst on my Amazon Quick buy page. :D
I sent it back for repairs. When it came back it only worked a couple of times and I'm having to send it back again. They said they would take care of it but I went ahead and ordered another one since my kiln don't get to come up for air very often. This way when I have to send one back I have a backup.
Happy Birthday, Robert! Shari and Buddy will be attending this year, so I guess the count is 29 now.
The count is now at 31. Jmoore and I plan to attend.
Jake I'm planning on making it down as well. I don't think the wife is interested in coming so I may ride the Spyder down and stay at a hotel, or may bring my camper. I'll need to decide. What's the situation on nearby campsites?
I think the count is now at 32.
The ones that bring campers normally just camp in the yard. We might have to get creative on where we park them all if a bunch show up but there should be plenty of room.
Nomad, thanks. It will be good to see you, and all the others this year. Lots of new faces too.
Is the couch in the living room taken? :D :)
I hope you guys don't mind a new guy crashing the party. I have been learning soooo much on this forum during the last few months and am sure I can learn much more in person. The planned agenda fits my specific short term learning needs to a "T". Planning to build a small DH kiln in the next few months based on Nyle's plans and knowledge gained from Nathan's video series and have really enjoyed the recent RRQS thread as QS is a planned focus of mine.
Mark me down as number 33 if you don't mind for both days. I look forward to shaking the hands of this tremendous knowledge base!

It does depend on who's asking.
PatD and I are tentatively adding our names to the list which should bring the total to 35. We don't exactly know what our schedule will be but no training for me.....well maybe potty training. Hopefully we can park the 5th wheel somewhere on site.
Of course this means that Pat has to make Jake a Coconut Pie. food6
two of us ronnie and kennese adkins

Jake likes Coconut pie.
I think K-Guy and Danny need to mud mud wrestle for the couch.

JR and Adelli makes 41. Got her talked into making a big ole pot of home made chicken and dumplin's. Both days for us and 2 for Doc's class. Unless Jake used all of my fire stater, there should be some there already.
CONCERNING THE DH CLASS
I have arranged for the donation of two Delmhorst Moisture Meters, 30 cans of B/O/S/S/ from Anchorseal, Copies of Sawmill and Woodlot magazine. Plus there will be handouts, copies of which are being donated. It also looks like the top technical guy from NYLE will be attending.
For the tentative Agenda (updated February 19) and to make suggestions on changes, see the Discussion in the Drying and Processing Board.
I'm in at number 42. Both days. Looking forward to the classes. What can I bring .How can I help ?Thanks Rob
Right at the moment we are 32 and snowing..... ;)
put us down for 2 more Dean and Lynn
We might have a large cypress log being brought by fishpharmer that we hope to have Nomad slab on the locus Saturday afternoon
It is a nice one.

Conference table coming up ! Nice stick 8)
How fast does Cyprus grow down that way? Around here that thing would be likely to have dinosaur eggs grown into it!!! :o
You want me to send you down a frozen hard maple that is spalting?
As cold as it's been it might be still froze in April.
Sorry, but you will have to keep the glaciation in the frigid North. SL, the largest cypress that I have measured was 7 1/2 feet in diameter.

wow now I am looking forward to this! good luck keeping WDH from loading it on his trailer in the middle of the night,
He does have a way of taking off with the lumber.
That looks like it ought to be fun!
Danny that tree looks familiar .
What I need is a walnut like that one. I am sure that Tule Peak has a number of them.
Here is one I passed on a few months back. They wanted 65,000 $ before transport. OUCH :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/35190/large_claro_walnut~1.JPG?easyrotate_cache=1551275765)
Did they get what they wanted ? :o
My wife would have freaked if I'd paid $65K for a hunk of wood, even one like that. That's out of my league. Did somebody ever buy it?
I was told that he couldn't sell it - so he was going to slab it up himself. Another log , smaller, went for 42,000$ which to me was WAY too much money. The price of large claro walnut logs has skyrocketed while the price for claro slabs has been going down. Yes you see advertisements for 20,000$ slabs but I sure as heck can't make those numbers work for me. Last fall I sold my slabbing mill .Way, way too many people in the "slab" business these days.
Thought I had posted but must have not pushed the correct button.
In spite of Danny's admonition Linda and I will bring our glaciated brains to the sunny south.
I plan to attend Doc's session-even tho I don't use my kiln any more.
Not sure of the count now but is north of 40 I'm sure.
Sound like as much fun as The roast at Jeff's place.
Linda and I look forward to seeing a lot of folks we know and some that I only know thru the forum posts.
Hotel reservation is confirmed. Staying at the Econo Lodge just north of Jake's place. See you all in April.
Are you flying or driving ? Rob

If you are asking me... I'm driving. It's just under 500 miles. I may ride the bike if the weather is good. Otherwise, I'll be in my truck.
I look forward to meeting you. Rob
Rob, are you flying into Atlanta or Macon?
Guess we make 45 and 46 both days. Looking forward to seeing everybody again.

There has always been a glimmer of hope for you, but now you can fully realize and enjoy a beautiful sunrise. :)

Was enjoying such an event this morning, but now have stomach cramps, diarrhea and general malais along with an excruciating migraine, measles, mumps and several orthopedic problems.
Not sure if I will be able to watch college hoops this afternoon.

Wow, MM had the same symptoms a week or so ago, must be them grittts
Nope completely different because I did not have mumps.
as my buddy would say , that is Georgia ice cream . you need some link sausage to mix in with that , yum
There is hope for Pete. He even ate the boiled peanuts.
We buy peanut hay in lieu of Alfalfa, usually a good bunch of raw peanuts in every bale, makes for a good snack while feeding the herd.
Once the raw ones dry in the bale, they are excellent.
I will second that :) Heck sometimes I work for peanuts......
Tule, are you a transplanted denizen from south of the Mason Dixon line?
Sixacres, Maybe try some Scrapple? (from the Philadelphia area) or a grinder (submarine sandwich which is New England fare.
My father was a Navy officer and we were moved overnight from England to Florida during the Cuban missile crisis build up. Peanuts out of the field, raw, were my favorite. We moved an average of every 18 months.
Wow, that'll give growing up a sense of excitement!
And, I bet you learned how to travel light. :D
My first boss instructed me to never travel with a pack that I couldn't run with.
Watching the news this morning I'm hoping Customsawyer is still on map ?
That was a mean devil that passed through and actually both WDH and Jake were in the storm's direction. It passed over and was within a very few miles of the State Park where we always stay when we are traveling in that direction.
Please don't blow away as I'm looking forward to visiting next month. :-\
That storm killed 23-24 people yesterday about 60 miles north of me. Bad, bad stuff.
Tornado came through just North of me about 25 miles. Stayed on the ground for a long, long time. Nothing like what happened in East Alabama. So many killed. It was a scary late afternoon. My heart goes out to the families that lost loved ones.
Everything is fine here. Sure hate it for those that got hit.
We're fine here too but they hit all around us. 10 miles away in Quincy, Fl, several homes destroyed. 35 miles NE, Cairo, Ga got torn up pretty bad. 40 miles East, just the other side of Tallahassee an EF-3 touched down briefly and took out 10 homes. If it had stayed on the ground just a minute longer it would have clobbered my Brother's house. Fortunately and miraculously, there were no fatalities or serious injuries in all of this. In looking at the pictures, I just don't see how that could be! Prayers up for those in Alabama who were much less fortunate. :'(
I would like to attend if you'll have me, both days, take the class.
Fly to Atlanta rent a car, see my stepdaughter in Atlanta either Thurs or Sun.
Wondering when everyone leaves, is there a get together on Saturday night usually?
Some people hang out Saturday night and socialize. Jake usually has a BIG bonfire.
BIG BONFIRE

Mr WiderHeadPoston might bring a bat with him, watch out for your drone at the Project.
Goats have a thing about high pitched sounds . . . but then again, he'll be slower than usual 'cause of his long skirt. ;) :D

Ms. Teea will be missed by all.

Jake, build it and they will come. It seems like this project is attracting many of the heavy hitters. I am really looking forward to it and seeing old friends and meeting new ones. Try to schedule some cool (not cold) weather for the weekend of the event if you can. Thank you for your hospitality.

I have completed the 35 page handout for the DH class. It is a PDF file with a size of 2.6 meg. I will send it in advance to anyone who can send me their e-mail using the mail option here at FF. I could not see a way to post this large file here directly at FF, but if there is one, we will then use the FF to convey the file to you. Otherwise, if you do not want to download and print yourself, we will have hard copies of the handout at the class. Note that I will send the handout to anyone who asks, not just attendees.
Gene
Thanks Gene - what is the cost for the hard copy? Just so everyone is prepared with cash for you.
I would like to buy the hard copy at the class please. Rob

The "attach documents and other options" button below the reply says it can handle pdfs up to 7028K which looks like 7 MB if I'm not mistaken.
I want a hard copy. They don't seem to get as many pop ups on them.
Hard copy for me too.
That size is plenty small enough to attach right to a post here so anyone that wants can print it off.
I think someone had offered to make and donate the cost of the copies. I would like one in advance so I am sure gene will post it somewhere and let us know. @Wood Doctor (http://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=18547)

That's me and I plan on attending Saturday,so I think that makes me # 58.
Don't think I can make it Friday so I'll print up as many copies as needed for the class and send them ahead to WoodDoc or Customsawyer. No cost for the hard copies, but I accept all forms of walnut if you must. I can bring more copies Saturday for anyone else that wants one.
The drying class PDF attached for anyone that wants to download.
Thanks Barney, I am printing my own as I type. i have read Doc Wengert's stuff for years so I want to review it in advance of the conference. thanks for getting this posted for us and all, you do not need to print one for me.
I just printed mine. Thanks Rob

Less 2. Looks like Wild Bill and I are out. 56
I thought that we were limited to 725k, but indeed it says 7025k which is plenty. Thanks Barney for correcting my error and posting it in message #164.
I am trying to download the file here as a pdf file. It worked. Yippee
See posting #164 for the download.
We only need one copy on the server so I'll remove the last one.
the pdf is on reply #165. :P
And the post telling you what post the pdf is on, is post 172 :D
:) :D ;D  :) :D ;D  :) :D ;D
glad to see you going Jeff!
First Watcha next PDFs, I think someone is breaking their own rules :)
Pdf documents using the document uploader is not breaking rules. Using pdf to post a photo is.
Does anyone have anything they would like to see done at the project? We normally have a little slow time at some point that we can demonstrate something else. If you do, speak up and we will see if we can make it happen. I personally like to turn ole Big Words loose on y'all and see the smoke come out of phones as you are searching google to see what he just said. :D
Here is an update of attendees as best I can discern from this thread. Correct me if need be.
And, of course, remember the GUEST OF HONOR and MASTER EDUCATOR - WOODDOC.

Thank you all, for sharing your knowledge on this Forum!!! I've been spending so much time reading that I'm not spending enough time sawing. I look forward to learning more first hand and meeting you all!
Mossey chariot Thanks for the list
Wow looking forward anxiously to seeing all of the attendees.
Too bad about Raider and Wild Bills tho.
I was going to bring him some excellent NYS extra sharp cheese like I did when we wintered in FL.
Also Doc, I downloaded the handout, but the 35 pages put a strain on my paper supply.
Pete you can still bring the cheese.
After a quick search I think we are missing K-guy and Jeff from what I saw. Maybe a couple of others.

Hey Jake - my brain has been froze for a few months and getting thawed out with friends will be a hoot.
How about: "
Three Logs, Three Sawyers"?
Here it is: Three less than perfect logs are milled by three savvy sawyers.
As the log gets milled, the sawyer goes through their cutting decision process re: cut list, 'reading' the log, opening cut, positioning and cutting pattern, etc.

Comments, suggestions and
multi-syllabic hyphenated celluosular histologically big words should probably start flying through the air as the sawdust flies.
Waddaya think?
barney67 was bringing the handouts. i so not see him on the list, also if he cannot get them mailed before the Friday meet, let me know and I am happy to do it as well so we have them in time for the conference. i printed mine front and back, so it takes less paper.
there has been a little interest in cutting and processing cookies. i may be flying so I cannot bring my jig, as well, most of the questions came from "up north" so not sure if anyone in this group is interested. i am happy to give my 2 cents on ways to improve survival of the cookies. (sorry MM if that should have gone to the Survivor thread)
Doc - cookies don't survive long around me, especially chocolate chip. Oh wait, you are talking about something else.. :D

I may have a tip on cookies .
Post #178 updated to include K-guy and Jeff as attendees. If someone can verify if barney67 is attending, I can add him as well.
I'm all for learning about cookies. @doc henderson (http://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=41041) - you have probably posted info you your jig previously. If so, provide a link. If not, I'll learn in April.
Thanks!
Let me know what to bring
I m guessing I will be 24 coming from Roopville Ga
@Barney67 (http://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=39236) , trying to update the list, are you still planning on attending in April, just sat. or Friday also?
Yes, please add me to list, attending Saturday only at this point.
Thanks
If we do the RRQS demo again, we should ask for a volunteer(s), who wants to closely participate, help measure and level the log, and identify the next rotation and cut (with Jake driving his mill, of course), especially folks who have tried it and had issues, or didn't quite get the hang of it, or want first person tutoring in front of a crowd, and I will hand the lumber crayon to them and see if they mark the correct cut line and why.
Ought to be fun to get more folks involved with the actual decision making of the technique instead of just observing us.
Depending on things, we can even do a purposeful no fleck miss cut and and correction, and I can explain how to adjust cant angle and chase max fleck on the wedge without wasting wood. That is the real advantage of this technique, the ability to free style and tailor the heaviness of the fleck in the narrowest boards so they are maximized on the widest boards, instead of the conventional technique of quartersawing where the initial wide cuts are guesses and the amount of fleck is left to chance.
I will gladly be one of the
VOLUNTEERS (Go Vols!!!) in the RRQS demo. Have not done it, have not yet tried it, so if YellowHammer can coach me through it, anyone should able to do it.
I might be a little distracted if the Vols, by chance, make it to the final four.
Here is an updated attendees list.

can anyone think of an easy way to tally who needs a copy provided vs print at home and bring. We are the forestry forum and I hate to waste paper and add to expense if not needed. I have printed my own copy and have it on my lap top so I do not need a copy of Gene's pdf. should we PM if we need a copy @Barney67 (http://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=39236) or is there a better idea to estimate number of copies needed. It is 16 pages both sides, so x 60 people starts to add up.

Doc, I filled up a medium flat rate box with 45 copies of the kiln class handout and mailed it out to Gene Friday, he should get it today or tomorrow. I can bring more if needed.
problem solved, I bet at least 15 will bring there own. I called my shipping place cause 18 x 60 is over 1,000 sheets or 2 reems of paper, @ 10.5 # and 32 dollars. Thanks again Barney.
Hi All,
New member, though I've been lurking for a while now. We'll be in the area and would love to join you for both days. 1 person (Ken) for the training. We will arrive in a self-contained camper van. My wife's name is Laura. Hoping we can park overnight on site.
Thanks. Looking forward to meeting everyone and learning a few things too.
Ken
It will be our first time to the project. Yellow Hammer told us about the gathering and we would like to come. Mike & Connie Frost. Looks like we will be 61 and 62. Wife wants to know what we bring?
With Posty added to it that should bring us up to 63.
When it comes to volunteers I would like to add for the record that I take all the help I can get when y'all get here. ;D
There is always small task that come up that are needing done and no way I can do them all. I've learned not to be shy and just ask folks for help. You've been warned. :D
Martha and I will be bringing lots of our best Alabama BBQ and some drinks.

Me, wife and kiddos are planning to come. Looking forward to it.
Thx
I can say this with confidence , Yellow hammer and Martha know good BBQ.
Updated attendees list showing a total of 68 (Posty is 2 for Ken and Laura). I wouldn't post an updated list so often but I'm afraid I'll loose track if I don't.

When it comes to processing logs of any size, I don't do it with out a edger. I bought my first edger in 2005 and won't be with out one. What few tricks I had I've forgotten.

Here is a list of things folks can bring if they are so inclined. Pick one if you want and state what you are bringing so we don't to many folks bringing the same thing. I might add more to the list as I think of them or if you have ideas shout them out.
Soft drinks
Bottled water
Paper plates
Plastic ware
Napkins
Chips
Dessert
Side dish
customsawyer,
I assume all the items on that list are needed both days.
I'll bring a dessert each day and a cooler of soda and waters.
I'll bring some paper plates, because they are lightweight...easy to tote :D
Dessert and side dishes.
Plus; two coolers with ice.
I'll bring some chips and soda. On second thought I'll just focus more on chips.
I am prob. flying, they are still doing body work on my truck. found hail on the roof and going to replace it. If I drive I will bring stuff, but may wait to see what is needed when I get there, or just chip in "mula" for the general stuff.
I'll hit the grocery in Dublin on the way in. Let me know.
Flying into Atlanta on Thursday, I'll be able to pick up goodies on my way to Jake's place.
Tule Peek - meet you in Dublin, we can gang up on the grocery list . . .

That will work . Where are you staying? I'm at the Fairfield Mariot in Doublin. I will have a car.
I am flying as well and can do some shopping, have a Sams and Cosco membership if that helps, I got a room at the Fairfield as well.

Haven't booked a hotel yet, should do that soon or end up sleeping in Jakes sharpening room. . .
You might need sharpening up.
A Dutch_Canadian blockhead like me might just break Jake's sharpening machines.
CBN or stone wheel . . . nothings worked so far. ;D
That is OK. I always thought that you were pretty sharp, anyway.
Jake is careful who he let's stay in there. Snoring vibrations can break stone wheels.

Sorry but that's already called for. Sharpening room is all mine. Jake hasn't told me exactly where i'm sleeping yet but I've got a really, really good idea. Ha! See you guys soon. Just came in from... um.... sawing.
I got the plasticware and napkins covered.
One or all of you can sleep in the sharpening room. Rent is that you have to sharpen 50 blades each.
First off there is no Sams club or Costco. Rentz is a small town that is about 4 miles away. We have a small grocery store and a Dollar General. We don't have a caution light. I think a few of the stop signs still say "Whoa". Dublin is a little bigger and the Walmart is about 15 miles away. Pretty much whatever we end up needing in a hurry it's not a problem to run and get. We've never run out of food and have always had a great time. I've tried getting ahead of myself before and the ladies end up setting me strait anyway.
I'll hear some dull snoring coming from the sharpening room. :o smiley_sleeping
I'll also bring a couple of coolers of ice.
Post # 216 has been updated with attendees list modifications - current as of 10:00 EDT March 22, 2019.

A sharp play on words Mr Magic!
Who's buying the grits?
And pickled baloney
Bringin some good NY xtra sharp cheese and kimchee if I get to the oriental market.
Pete,
Where do you get your kimchee? I love good kimchee.
mh
Not sure where the grits will come from, but something tells me there will be plenty of baloney!!! :D

:o -Whoa, 50 blades ?!?! Inflation I reckon. I think I may still have credit in that dept ??
Are the accommodations still (1) blade box to put down on the concrete floor? Don't do much for the mole crickets, ants and skeeters ! :D It ain't a bad place to take a nap though, in my experience. How much for (2) boxes ?
Jake, is the alarm clock still the ramps being
gently lowered on the gooseneck ?? ;D
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/19307/20180413_195213.jpg?easyrotate_cache=1523705088)
There's more to The Project than grits and baloney - if you wear a pink T-shirt, Jake may ask you do some chores too. That's Mrs Yellowhammer aka Martha
Yep, he DOES stoke a larger than normal fire. :o 8) :o
I'll bring a stick of venison summer sausage and a jar of Koegels pickled baloney.
I'll offer to make grits with a CA specialty, sardine sauce.
Quote from: Bruno of NH on March 22, 2019, 11:16:07 AMWho's buying the grits?
Thought they were free at the highway dept. ??? Just like we get sand/salt up here. ???
I think MM used them (grits) to grout his tile seen behind his saw dust remover. Looks like they will last forever!! :D
If any of you who are attending Jake's project want to spend a little time doing dendrology (tree id) and wood id, it might be a good diversion. There are a lot of posts on the FF trying to id certain trees or wood. With folks coming from all over, we could cover a wide spectrum if each of us brought a few local samples.
There are some that give me fits - mainly the ones that I do not get to see often, like white spruce vs. red spruce. If anyone is interested, I'll bring a couple dozen leaf and wood samples of the species abundant in central Florida.
Danny (WDH) may even bring some challenging samples if we encourage him.
I have a board I'll bring.
Oh no, not another mystery board ;D.
Quote from: WDH on March 22, 2019, 08:40:07 PM
Oh no, not another mystery board ;D.
You might want to consider bringing your microscope or whatever you use to magnify the cells.
GAB
I am bringing a Mystery Specimen 'specially for ?? ;D
Danny doesn't need a microscope, he's a sure nuff wood whisperer. He ID'd a log for me the other day, over the phone. I just held the phone next to the log, he talked to it, then listened for a second or two, then told me what it was. I think he called it a rare "Osageash."
I would think WDH could just smell the wood and know what it is :)
Bruno, with a few species, you can go just that.
YH, your customer's "osage orange" did not have enough osage or orange in it ;D.
Wish I could attend
My be next year if there is one.
If I dont get Kimchee I'll bring a small sample of venison jerky which is all I have left.
We will bring a side dish and drinks .
I would suggest everybody bring a folding chair for themselves.
Excellent suggestion. The amount of suitable equipment to sit on is very limited. ;D
Yeah, the worst part of going to Jake's place is how expensive it is. He's got so much nice equipment, I never seem to visit without driving home saying "I need one of those!" and bang, another bank note. :D :D

Oh, NO!!! Say it isn't so. I might be faced with imminent divorce afterwards. :D
Looking forward to meeting you all, and getting some new ideas.
If y'all need one so bad you can buy this whole shebang and have at it. I'll even coach for 6 months or so if the price is right.
Of course 5% goes to the Forestry Forum right Jake? :D
I'm going to get you a T Shirt that says "Team Sawmill - Coach" on it. :D :D
We will bring side dishes both days.
If there is down time and you all are interested, I could review the "stop the bleed" info. takes about an hour and teaches use of tourniquets, quick clot, or whatever you have. review a little on active shooter. best if i can dongle my phone to a tv for the video. might be good on the job, or on the way home on the road. Off topic, but if interested would be happy to do.
Doc: great suggestion, I'm in.
Most of us are involved in activities that make it a lot more likely to be in a situation where we can help save a life. . . or our own.
A refresher course or an update on new techniques, is sixty minutes well spent. 👍
thx Andries. I usually have the stuff in my pack and will bring it. we can see if there is time and or how many are interested and will do it if desired. Would also be willing to facilitate a discussion r.e. cookie cutting and drying.
Doc
I thought you just stuffed sawdust in and wrapped it with electrical or duct tape? :D ;D
No that does not work unless you add some spit and dirt to hold it all together. lol

You are speaking the truth Robert.
Several years ago we bought a manual mill thinking we would be content to saw a few logs. It has been a very precipitous and slippery slope ever since. We plan to add a battery so that we can have hydraulics anywhere and build a small wood sterilization box soon. We will probably wait until after the weekend at Jake's to start these projects. Of course with all of the Jones' getting vacuum kilns...

Hey ,,,I resemble that remark :D :D :D
Keep a budget of $300 dollars and buy what you want.
That is one SGU (Standard Goat Unit). I have spent many, many, many, many, MANY, MANY SGU's on my modest operation. Jake prints SGU's.
:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
It's like going to a Bass Pro Shops of sawmilling, but instead of ringing a bell or blowing a horn for the next show and tell, Jake (or someone ) fires up an engine.
So we will be all be just chatting and telling stories, then all of a sudden, echoing off the clouds, comes this "Vroom, Vroom" sound and then it's "Well, love to talk some more, but got to go. Something big just cranked up." :D :D
Y'all are killing me. So what would a SJU (Standard Jake Unit) be? $301.00 If I'm going to be printing them I would rather stay true to myself.

Dont have any SGUS or plan on buying any SJUS but may bring some Benjamins

Well it looks like tentatively ain't gonna happen. :-\ I blew my "motorcycle" knee out a couple of days ago and the knee brace is not helping much. All that I was doing was getting dressed but took an awkward side step. I see no way that I can do the prep necessary much less make the trip. Very disappointing because I was really looking forward to the meeting and fellowship.
That drops the number to about 70 and someone else will have to make Jake a Coconut Pie.
Oh no MM - I am very sorry to hear this. I was very much looking forward to meeting you.

Same here ! Sorry about your leg !
Dang MM, shouldn't let something like that stop you. Seriously, I'd be happy to loan you a handicap scooter to get around on. Have a nice one all ready to go, just charge the batteries..
Very sorry to hear. Looking forward to meeting you somewhere else in the future maybe at the pig roast this year. Hope you get better fast.
I was looking forward to meeting Da MagicMan! Done told everyone in Jefferson about it! But seriously, hope you get to feeling better!
@doc henderson (http://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=41041) Do you think you could borrow an ambulance from work and pick up @Magicman (http://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=10011) on the way? I think we could get a gas fund going to cover the costs. :D
Somebody stop by and pick him up. Don't take no for an answer. :snowball:
Sorry MM. Maybe you will feel better by then. I know the camper takes a lot of prep. see how it goes. not like you need a plane ticket or a motel reserved. With this group, i would be afraid that a gas fund means we go eat mexican food with chilies and beans. lol, Mm if there is anything i can do to help, and i am sure i speak for everyone, we will do it. You are the Patriarch of the FF family. Jeff is like the big brother! I am just the smartie pants neighbor. Hope you recover quicklie and can make it.
SS I have a jackson wheelbarrow, not sure long it will take from his house. :D
I agree withs docs assessment of Lynn and Jeff but doc is not the only smarty pants on here.
I also wish MM a speedy recovery, however if the nurse is Mrs. Pat he may milk it for a while.
Now if he was in the care of a battle hardened nurse coming at him with a 3" long 12G needle
that just might shorten his recovery time a smidgen.
Hi Lynn.

Hope you heal fast Magic man.

Just watched the movie Lawless at a bachelor party the other night. Might have to fill er up with moonshine when we get down south, and put grits in the tires so we do not get a flat!!! maybe PatD Mrs. @Magicman (http://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=10011) can ride up front and run the lights and siren, so we can get MM there!

No one has any credit in the blade department. We all have to start from scratch. All of the blade boxes have been removed so bring your own sleeping bag or box. I doubt if I will have the trailer hooked up so we might have to improvise and use a swift kick or something if no blades are getting done.
Will miss seeing you and Pat, Lynn.
Hope you heal quickly.
BTW what is a motorcycle knee?
Plan to get to our motel in Dublin about 4PM on the 4th.
Maybe ride down to scope the place out if time permits.
All are welcome to show up early on the 4th. Let me know how many extra sets of gloves to have on hand as you will likely be put to work. :D
Jake you gotta remember I aint a spring chicken anymore so go a little easy on me.
Plus I have my winter fat on me yet cause I havent been very active in my hibernation.
i think motorcycle knee is when there is "harley anything wrong with it". Indian, it will be ok. Kawasaki will help, i.e. eating steak and drinking Japanese wine. any thing else you need to know about motorcycle knee? just be glad you do not have airplane prostate, Hindenburg heart, or railroad retinas. :P :o :)
Im going to have to pass this year. Sorry we couldnt make it. I was really looking forward to meeting all the great people that were attending. Hope all goes well and verybody has a safe trip⚙️

Hay now there is one for sale up here in Sisseton S.D.
Now that we're a couple days away, I wanted to bring back up the list of items to bring.
Looks like I'll be bringing a cooler of soda and water(approximately a case of each, each day, so we will need more folks to bring some), a dessert each day, probably some venison sausage and crackers, and a couple lawn chairs.
Anybody else think of anything else?
Okay - here's an attendee update (hopefully deciphered correctly). Gene was previously listed a the Guest of Honor but is now on the list with his wife Barbara. Looking forward to it!!!!

I do have a small ice machine. I will put some extra up before the project and let it be making more as we go. I've never figured how much it makes in a day as it's always been enough for me. :D I also have a friend just up the road with a much larger ice machine that we can get more for free if we need to. I went back and looked and the original list of things to bring/pitch in are on page 11 towards the bottom. I think it was post 217. Don't know where we are on the list as it would take to much concentration. I'm also not that worried about it.
I can't remember if I've mentioned this part but for lunch on Friday the plan is to send some of the ladies in to grab some pizzas. This keeps any of the members from having to watch a grill and miss out on any of the kiln class. Friday evening will be hamburgers and hotdogs on the grill with a bonfire (weather permitting) and live music provided by WDH and Mr. Larry. Then Saturday Julio will put the chickens on for lunch and all the other fixens that the ladies contribute. Saturday evening is usually left overs as there is normally plenty of them and most are still suffering from lunch anyway. We then gather around the fire or on the porch and share some of what we all learned and some of the knowledge that we each bring with us.
Looking forward to see everyone. Safe travels to all.
It is getting close. I can do a demo while we are sawing (Saturday) on how to make lump charcoal, if there will be a fire and someone has a 30 gallon metal oil drum with a lid. does anyone have any hardwood? :D
I am flying in so will pick up whatever is needed in Dublin each day. I may bring my gloves and stop by Thursday when I get in town.
Sounds like a great weekend, looking forward to seeing everyone,
Danny and Larry are going to bring the music, well, that is great to news. Those boys can play.

good deal I might have to throw my banjo and martin in my truck ,
I'm planning to bring a vat of tater salad and a bunch of beer. :)
Sharpening 50 blades for rent of the sharpening room. The price for a room at La Quinta seems awfully affordable in comparison to having to use the Cook's sharpener to do 50 blades. I am sure that Jake would earmark that sharpener only for me to use. ;D I may be able to re-negotiate the 50 blade rent if I can source the parts to bring his WM sharpener back to OEM configuration. ;)
Looking forward to seeing you again, Dang. I was through your neck of the woods yesterday. I shall also bring cold, refreshing beverages.

If you're able to work your miracles on the WM sharpener than I might let you have my bed and I'll sleep in the blade shop.
Don't know where we stand right now on who's bringing what, but I picked up enough paper plates, bowls, napkins and plasticware to cover things. If we run short on any of that it'll be the plasticware. I only got 120 sets. Maybe some extra forks wouldn't hurt.

It looks like John and I will be camping in a Dublin hotel due to the condition of his camper's tires. Do any of you have any recommendations? I figure we will stay at one near 441 and I-16. Thank you.
Bate's Motel...
No, there's the Hampton Inn or the Fairfield Inn, and I think some others.

I am cheap so Super 8 for us.
I may not be a professional logger, but I did or at least plan to stay at a Holiday Inn Express.
Faith and I will not be able to make it. I was looking forward to meeting with old and new friends.
The Fairfield is new, only a couple years old. Nice, but the others are fine, also.
We stayed in the Holiday Inn last year and it was nice but we were only there a few hours a night so we opted for the Super Ocho this time. Two nights there is about what we paid for one at the Holiday Inn.
We'll be at Days Inn by Wyndham on Thursday evening. Took off early to visit family near Hickory, NC. Jillane is out running around with her sister, I got to visit with member Mike Davis from Granite Falls, see his new-to-him B20, and even made a little sawdust. 😁

Dang Bill, I'm sorry to hear that.
Jake,
What time is the start time Friday morning? I may have missed it but this thread is getting so long it'll be tough to go back and find it.
Raider, sorry to hear about Sue Ann's sister. Our prayers are with you and Sue Ann.
Looks like I can get away for a few days.
Will see you all on Fri and Sat.
Bringing big chocolate salad dressing cake if I can get Jane to make it tomorrow morning with peanut butter icing.
Don't know what number I will be.
Hey Jake. Will the Friday class be outside or in the shop? I will bring a chair.
So this is the view this morning as I go outside for my coffee. I have to leave this beautiful Maine spring for the hot weather in Georgia.

I do believe will try to start around 8AM Friday. At least, I will be ready to go at that time.
where put me down for Friday. Pam will be there on Saturday ,grill is loaded chicken to be picked up today. 8) 8)
Class will be under the pole barn unless Gene would like it somewhere else.
Sadly, I am unable to make it due to work demand at my other business. So, scratch 4. :-\ :-[
@GeneWengert-WoodDoc (http://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=20498), was looking forward to your kiln presentation. Have you (or have you considered) filming it? If you do any closer to me, I would volunteer.
Wishing you all a great event of fun, food and brainstorming.
I am , unfortunately , going to have to remove my name from the attendance list . My boss has pointed out that we are way behind in orders , have deliveries that need to be made Saturday and mulch to grind Sunday , and customers that need to pick up completed orders on Saturday . He also pointed out that I have a new I-dry waiting for installation and an entire new mill set-up also waiting . Additionally , (sometimes I just hate this guy!) he pointed out that I just returned from a trip to Mooresville , N.C. , attending a Weinig function , and " drug it out ", into a mini-vacation! What can I say , the SOG has some valid points. I really regret not being able to visit with some friends I don't get to see as often as I like , but I do understand you will be getting a surprise visitor that will be taking my place , so don't lower the attendance count . Wish all safe travels and have a good time . Oh yeah , take it easy on the adult beverages Kyle and Dan . I think you two can be a dangerous combination ! ;)
Julio's chicken is the very best. Worth the trip just for that chicken 8).

I would live to attend but have to much going to make it. Is there a way someone can film the class wooddoc is putting on? Would be so cool if yall could. !!
Last time I flew, I used a piece of rope for a belt so my pants wouldn't fall down when they asked me to hold my arms up to do the spin x-ray scan. And after the scan, I got my regular belt out of my computer bag and put it back on. My wife said I was crazy to do such a thing but it worked for me, and I didn't set off any alarms.

Thanks to Jake for putting together and hosting another great Project. And thanks to all who helped before, during and after. We really enjoyed it.
A fine Middle Georgia Event!!!
My deep appreciation goes out to Jake for hosting another 'Project'. Inviting the Forestry Forum to his home and his business goes over and above a dedication to his chosen profession. It's a rare thing to have such a good time and learn so much in two short days. Thank you sir.
Well, I actually left, made it to the airport and am sitting at the gate. For a guy who doesn't get out much I sure have to say these TSA folks are not what you read about in the news.
I again made the super X ray machine go "whoop, whoop" and nobody got upset, just really friendly and lots of unique hugs out of the deal. Didn't get a phone number this time either, but for sure I will have to return next year if nothing else for the airport hospitality.
:D
We are just about on our way home, from the hotel. It was a great Project, and thanks to Jake for making it happen. Great place, great people, great time. We had a ball, and thanks again for having this. Thanks, Jake! Thanks Dr. Gene, and thanks to all for putting in the hard work to make this come together.
Wow what a great time. Thanks one and all for coming and a huge Thank You to everyone that pitched in and helped. The better this thing gets, it seems the more help I need. Y'all know I can't do it with out you, from the ladies in the kitchen to others pitching in in (Tom) the yard or at the mill. A big Thanks to Gene for teaching the class. Y'all are great guest.

Wow!!! This was my first time at the project and I had a great time !!!. Thank you Jake for your hospitality and your dedication to this industry. It is not everyday someone will open their home up to a bunch like this. You are a real risk taker. Your operation is very impressive. Also have to thank all the people for sharing their knowledge with me. This was my first Forestry Forum event also. And I am so thankful to Jake and his hospitality, to Dr. Gene Wengert for sharing his vast knowledge, to Jeff for the great forum, to all the event sponsors, and to all the forum members present that welcomed me into this great group of diverse, yet focused, individuals.
What a great, first class two day event! Fun (learning about drying lumber and quarter sawing logs), fellowship, and food! What great combinations.
Thanks again to ALL who make this event all it was. I am looking forward to the next one... 8)
Glad y'all all had a good time. Sorry to see Dr. Gene could not find more appropriate attire to wear in the picture with Doc H. I assume his luggage got lost and that Ga Bulldog shirt was all they could find at the Goodwill to fit him. :D :D
I bet them TSA folks got tired after Southside Logger ran back through the security checkpoint 3-4 times and kept requesting the lady agent come do another pat down check on him again. :D :D
For me the sharing of knowledge is awesome but the fellowship is one reason i go every year. It is so nice to see old friends and meet new ones every year. It would be hard to find a better group of people anywhere .

Jake, DanG good event. Julio killed it with the goober peas and chicken. I have been looking forward to attending your project for quite some time and it did not disappoint - just what I needed - a break from impersonating an adult human with responsibilities.
As Slider stated, the knowledge sharing is incredible but the fellowship with old friends and the opportunity to meet new ones is what I really appreciate.
We made it back home a little after noon today following a nap at the Super 8. The variety of road kill was diverse enough that I considered starting a new thread about road kill leaving Jake's. We saw several opossums, deer, hawk, possibly a cotton tail and when we were just south of Gainesville there was a 5-6' gator smushed in the emergency lane.

What a group of great people - the Forestry Forum Sawyers. Thank you Jake and your better half for the wonderful hospitality. Thank you Gene for sharing some of your vast knowledge. Thank your Robert, Danny and Jake for the great demonstration of RRSQ. And thank all the wonderful sawyers for the companionship and sharing of knowledge. Southern hospitality together with a tremendous knowledge base powered by the nicest folks you will ever meet. Thanks for having me. Rob
Thanks for the info, that looked like an important presentation, (especially with plaques made of highly valuable Black Walnut)! (https://forestryforum.com/board/Smileys/default/thumb.gif)
Had another great couple of days in Rentz, Ga. It is pretty cool when sawyers from as far west as California, as far north as Canada come down to a little town in Georgia to meet up and learn about kilns and quartersawing.
I always come away from the weekend a little lot fatter and with a lot more knowledge than I came with. Thanks Jake for another well planned sawing project.
Thanks SS, I am sorry but I forgot to take close up pics of the plaques

Got home yesterday afternoon. Great people, great food, great music, some good drinks (had something with lemon in a small cup that went down great!!!), lots of good info and a 2 sided planer that was sweeeeet. I don't think anyone can now look at a big sycamore without imagining all that quartersawn beauty.

Whats the story behind that photo in reply #405 of Dr. Gene, Fearless Leader, and Jake? (https://forestryforum.com/board/Smileys/default/huh.gif)
I'm pretty sure there were come better pictures taken of that presentation, but I don;t know by who. Those were great plaques!
I would like names added to all the pictures
I took 5 or 6 but the plaques were oriented toward the recipient as it should be so I mostly got the back signatures. I would guess that Dr. Wengert and Captain Scooter Jake would be willing to take pic and post them. I usually take a pic before but failed this time. We can add names to the pics.
Thanks Doc H for the plaques and coasters.
Thanks Doc Gene for the anchorseal, the moisture meters, and the Dehumidification Kiln Drying Class.
Thanks to Stan from Nyle for great kilns and technical expertise.
Thanks to Mossy Chariot (Tony) for the Class handouts.
Thanks Derek (Sawman815) and Kasco for your blades and support.
Thanks Jeff for creating such an awesome Forum that is the reason that we found each other and came together for an event like this.
Thanks E-Tex for those beautiful saw blade cut outs.
Thanks Julio for that Chicken that is the Best. Thanks Julio for that Chicken. Thanks Julio!!
Thank you Larry Hutchens for the music.
Thanks everyone who brought supplies, food and drinks and to Tammy, Vicky, Martha and those that prepared the great food that we enjoyed.
Thank you Jake for being such a gracious Gentlemen and a consummate sawyer.
Thank you Robert (Yellowhammer) for sharing your experience with RRRQS (Roberts Reverse Roll Quartersawing) technique that was the reason we were sawing sycamore.
Thanks for the opportunity to meet so many talented people.
Thanks for the weather not being too bad.
Thanks to Andrew Burnett, Mike Frost, and Tod Utter, and others for superb off-bearing and sticker stacking.
To anyone that I inadvertently left out, thank you too!
Thanks to all my very good friends that I got to hang out with and to the new ones that I met.
Thanks to my truck and trailer for hauling all that superb sycamore home with me ;D.
There were three sycamore logs. Here is Jake prepping the first one for sawing.

The lumber having safely arrived home (my place!). About 1260 BF, however, most of the boards have not been edged, so that figure will go down a bit after edging. After edging and shrinkage from drying, hopefully will yield about 1000 bf net. Note the Tennessee stowaway crotch walnut log that snuck onto the front of my trailer. (Note to those Frozen Northern Types. No glaciation here).

Nice load!
what are your plans with the sycamore cut off?
What a great time. I have always wanted to attend this event but could never make it. It definitely did not disappoint.
Jake, you have a great place and thank you so much for your hospitality.
Robert, you are a wealth of knowledge. Thank you for taking the time to help teach and answer all our questions.
Danny, also, thank you for helping teach all of us.
Jeff, your forum is what got this started. Thanks.
Gene, thanks for the great class on DH kiln drying.
And to everyone else, it was great meeting you and finally being able to put a face to a name.
And the food... It probably deserves its own post on how good it was. Top notch!
Look forward to seeing all you guys again. Hopefully next year.
Nathan,
I will cut bowl blanks out of the sycamore cut-off.
I would also like to thank everyone that attended. This project is only as good as those that attend. This one was first class, just like the guests.
And no one bragged on my nail sawing ability.
Maybe because that was something no attendee needed more training in doing. :D :D
WDH pretty much summed everything up in his post thanking everyone. I feel the same way. Wow, what a special event!

This was a great weekend.
If you've never been to Jake's during this time you really should plan and come.
Your first time will be the best time.
Everyone has a story and I promise you will learn something you didn't know.
This year there was probably the biggest crowd yet.
I'm not repeating everything that was said before me but I totally agree with what was said.
WDH had a very good summary.
Everyone has a highlight that sticks with them when they leave.
The highlight of my weekend at The Project was meeting member TULE PEAK.
I learned the technics they use in California to produce those tables and doors they build.
They do things a lot different and of course have species of wood that Ive never heard of.
Thanks Rob for taking the time to tell us how you do things.
I also got to meet new Forestry Forum members I have never met before.
And it goes without saying I got to see the old timers I've known for years.
Everyone want understand this but its your family you get to see during this time.
It was good to see Jeff "The Boss" and Stan who drove all the way from Michigan.
But maybe it is just me but the best time I had was listening to Larry and Danny play the music.
These are 2 very talented musicians and this year the music was exceptionally good.
Larry even played the banjer this year.
Even Jeff played the guitar and surprised me.
I thought the only thing he could play was his Balalalaicakaiatianla. But he actually is a very talented string instrument player.
The food was out of this world. Grilled Chicken, pulled BBQ, Chicken and Dumplings Hamburgers, Italian Sausage......more than I can list. Julio....the best cook this side of Atlanta. :D :D :D
When Jake puts the dates up next year....plan to be there. You'll be glad you did.
Thank you Jake for having us.

What a blast this weekend! My first but definitely not my last. Thanks to everyone who made this happen. Lots of knowledge, good folks and good food. Maybe we should do this every month!
I wood say you are spot on!!! Great looking boards. I get to try my hand tomorrow. Have a white oak on the mill now.
We made it home this afternoon, what a great weekend. Thanks to Jake and Tammie for being such great hosts. I've got several new things to try this week. My apologies if I didn't get to say hello, or goodbye, to everyone... there was a lot going on. Seeing something new, or learning something, all weekend long.
Jillane made the comment that she hopes that anyone's spouse, or significant other, who feels like they may not fit in should definitely take the chance. Our hosts, and the other ladies, made her feel very welcome. She met a lot of nice people and really enjoyed the event, even if she didn't get to tote a board. :)

Everyone just remember that the Granddaddy of all Get Togethers is the;
Pig Roast at Jeff & Tammy's place in Harrison, MI, on the 1st Saturday in August.
Will sorely miss all at the roast this year, cant make it, darn it!
Two things about the sawing project.
I took some good NYS sharp cheese and a jar of kimchee which unfortunately never made it out of my cooler. But there was ample food regardless.
Second My wife, as soon as we got home, started a batch of Blaine and Monica's lemon bourbon.
Our gallon jar leaked when we tried inverting it so had to use 2 half gallon canning jars.

I will probably get kicked off the forum ,but I don't think that what MM said here was necessary ,I think that over 500 posts think that this get together was a great one also 8) 8) bye everyone >:( >:( as I go out the door
Magicman is just trying to make himself feel better because he skipped it this year since no Sweet Gum was being sawn is all. :D
Hey Papa 1. I know you are wanting to not have anyone "take away from the sawing project 2019" and we all agree. I interpreted it as a transition to the next big thing, and not as a slight. Hope you stick around! :)
Thanks to all again. We had 52 people on Friday morning. So, now, what would you folks like for next year's 2020 project?
Maybe something on grade sawing (maximize clear lumber) oak, both a small log and a large logs? Time is money and so we need to balance time with profit.
Maybe another drying topic, like stacking and air drying? Or more details on drying costs?
Or maybe even log grading?
Or another idea?
Doc, that all sounds good, maybe we need to extend the project by a few days. :D
Log and lumber grading, grade sawing would all be very helpful topics. Some of us almost did extend the project Doc :D
Wow! Doc is willing to do another seminar next year.
My only problem is in getting there with a 960 mile drive.
Being a senior senior citizen driving is not any fun any more, especially through Pennsylvania on I 81.
Linda loved All the gals.
I loved all the guys.
And the food too.
Papa1stuff, obviously you put your on (mis)interpretation to what I said which in my opinion was not necessary. I have never and will never put down on any get together, whether it be a Chickin' Crispin', Sawing Project, or Northern Project. They are all good events, but none measure up to the Pig Roast.
I hope to someday get to meet you at one of the Projects or even at the Pig Roast. :)
Some states have an extension specialist that works in forest products (Dr. Bill Smith ar SUNY). Some states have someone in the State Forestry office in products. So, contact them to see if they can perhaps schedule a seminar close to home and then have me come to make the presentation. Although I do not charge the Sawing Project mileage or a fee, there would be for out of state.
Maybe WoodMizer or a similar company would sponsor a seminar that I could give...they did do that about 20 years ago. So, I would be doing the travel. But the Sawmill Project is awesome indeed...if there were a few more people like Jake, this world would be so much better.
Jake, I have ordered some of the polyester composite cord strapping, buckles and tensioner with a cart. Thanks for the tip and Jennifer at McGregor was great. You know we all just want to be like you! :D I ordered a crescent brand nail puller "like yours" but it was made in Thailand. at you leisure could you post info or pic about your nail pulling slide hammer. I think southside is trying to corner the market! @customsawyer (http://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=1861) @Southside (http://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=24297)
Doc when I saw crescent on Jakes puller I looked it over, it is Taiwanese.
My dad had one of those babies but was missing when my brothers and I went thru his stuff after he passed in1997

I picked this nail puller up last week. Crescent but made in China. I hope it not a fake.
You will find lots of the crescent slide hammer nail pullers in New England area
Ones made in the USA at junk shops and places like that.
Been using a "NailJack" for years

I have both of these tools. Two of the top large black pullers. Couldn't get by without them.

Thanks for the kind words Sir. I'm sure I'm not the only one that feels the same about you and all you are doing for us.
As to the nail pullers I think I have 4 or 5 of them. I leave the one out there for bait. The rest I have are from customers that say "I have one of those at the house. Do you want it?" YUP. ;) A friend just brought me another one last week that his mother got at a yard sale. Maybe next year we can have a auction. :D I was even nice enough to give Slider Al (AKA Scooter) one a couple of years ago. His might be the one we auction.
Everyone needs a old scooter hanging around. :D
Yes Jake did call me that name in front of about 100 people . I started to get mad and go home but he had possession of the 6 cases of beer that i brought.
That makes you a sly Scooter.
at least you were not a dry scooter!!! 8) I think capem and scooter are Jake's way of saying "the story you are about to hear is true, but the names have been changes to either capem or scooter to protect the ... weeeeell not so innocent.
Hey Al, Slider, Scooter, etc. It was great to meet and talk with you. And I'll call you what every you like - thanks for sharin' your beer!!!! ;D ;)
Couple of finished projects from our Sawing Project lumber. This sycamore table was made from the 9/4 center slabs initially sawn in R'sRRQS technique.

Very nice
Wow! Just Wow!
That is impressive.
Nice job Danny. From log to furniture. I know it took a lot of time, work, patience and skill.
I would not call it impressive. More like abso-smurfly amazing. Especially after seeing the log sitting there at Jakes.
I watched you saw those!

I did not make the pieces. They were made by customers that bought the wood. The table is very simple in design, but elegant. Made by a professional furniture maker, a Lady who is very talented. I remember some one asking about what the 9/4 center cuts pieces would be for while we were sawing the centers boards out as we were preparing to make the two halves that would be reverse rolled, so this answers that question.
The QS sycamore door was made by another furniture maker. These sliding doors are popular. He also made one out of my wormy blue pine. Many sawyers would throw these beetle ridden boards in the burn pile. Wormy blue pine is one of my best sellers.

I attempted to make a post earlier but failed. The sycamore is mesmerizing. I would not be able to do paperwork on that table because I would be gazing at the figure in the wood in stead of working.
I regret that we were not able to have another project this spring. I look forward to seeing old friends and learning new stuff each year.
There is a spalted scrap off of that log in my shop that may be turned into something soon.
Looks very. And you get to admire and enjoy them 👍👍
That ladies and gentlemen is how you brag on me. Please take notes for future reference.

.................. Wormy blue pine is one of my best sellers.
I need to rethink my use of it. To avoid using really good "more valuable" lumber the past 3 or 4 months I've used a lot of wormy blue pine to replace bad sub flooring and fill the holes where I removed the two fireplaces in the 1870 portion of our house. Maybe I should reverse my thinking. smiley_headscratch

Yep, I've burned better wood than that, because I can't keep it from getting doughy. How do you get it that wormy without getting rot? Was it dead standing timber?
Yes, pine beetle killed trees that the ambrosia beetles infested and brought in fungus. It is a highly variable process though. That is what makes the wood so colorful and interesting.
Another update on what this wood that we sawed is being used for. Forum member Bob Howell took some of our Sawing Project sycamore and used it to make this work of art.

Simply amazing. If it sounds as good as it looks it will be fine.
That is one of the neatest things I've seen on this forum. So much amazing talent here!
Simply stunning!

Doc:
Everything is for sale.
It all depends on how much of your stash you are willing to trade for it.
It is very nice. The maker made a great looking instrument.

Beautiful.
Great job.
I just read through part of this post and watched 123maxbars' (Nathan) video again of the sycamore sawing. I regret that we were not able to reconvene this past April. This has become an event that I look forward to each year. I learn a ton and have met so many incredible folks since I started attending. Thanks, CustomSawyer, for hosting.
Caveman, Did you ever do anything with the Disney railroad trim pieces ? I was thinking about you today as I continue to get requests for charcuterie (cheese) board blanks. There are quite a few customers who buy from me, making good money developing and selling these boards. Very, very popular here on the left coast. Just sayin'.
Cheers, Rob
For anyone that has never attended here are the two previous sawing projects videos I produced:

The young man who bought all of that stuff came over this evening to look at my Mother's sinks and faucets, which he will replace. He told me they are stacked on pallets and getting grown over with weeds. I dropped a piece off last week to the local lumber store as a novelty, hoping that some folks would like to have some. I sold a little bit of it last week but my take is 1/4.

same here maybe Jake will try again after things get better, hopefully,
Figured I would give this one a bump for those that have never been to a project. Nathan has some great videos of this one and the one in 2018 posted in here. They will give y'all a idea of some of what goes on at a project.
