Alaskan Sawmill - YouTube

This is a video of an easy way to split large logs with an Alaskan sawmill to put on the bandsaw.

That is not a system I've seen before.  I have a Grandberg alaskan mill with 66" bar.  I'd like to halve some large logs I have and that rail and bracket system look like they'd work (Cannot halve them with the grandberg, only about 8" cut depth).  Can you tell us more about the bracketry?  Is this all homemade?  Any closeups of the rig? Thanks.

Nice video but I think I missed the "easy" part. I do wish I had seen what it looked like when they moved that top half off the log.

I'm not sure I'd call that "easy", but it sure looks like it works. Gary

I have enjoyed my chainsaw mill.  There is a reason I have a new bandmill.  I wouldn't call the sawing in the video "easy" either.  It is an impressive way to deal with oversized logs.  But because that requires two people to do, I couldn't do it on any kind of regular basis.

I take 2 4x4 and screw them to the end of the logs level than add 2 pieces of 2x2 steel tubing on the side. Then take the top part of the mill off. The piece on the bar then will rest on the tubing. Try to take some pictures next time I do one. I think it take about 7 minutes to saw that log into.

One way to do it for sure, it looks like a custom built version of what Logosol's bigmillsystem Can do, only with a lot less features, but probably not a lot cheaper with the added expense of the second powerhead
Turbosawmill M6 (now M8) Warrior Ultra liteweight, Granberg Alaskan III, lots of saws-gas powered and human powered :D

     Howdy,

We always cut them vertically with a single end bar. Just don't stuff your cover with noodles. Add a couple wedges on the ends (you don't want your last drive on the wedge to be in the middle because that can't can, try to eat your feet- don't ask), and some gravity. You're outta there.

Leaves the cut to rough. I end wasting 2 inches on each side to clean it up. This way is with in a 1/4 of a inch. Just my way of doing things probably split 25 logs lately.

I'm still interested to see what the bracketry looks like that is attached to the mill.  I have an older granberg mill that is very different.  Here's my kit.
