Over 20 years ago I bought a set of plans from Mother Earth News of how to build a gasogen generator. The price of gas did not concern me much then. I am now starting to get concerned...........Does anyone here have hands on knowlege about it?  http://www.motherearthnews.com/library/1981_January_February/They_Run_Their_Truck_on_Wood_

I am doing some research myself.  When gas hit $3.00 a gallon in chicago and I sometimes drive 500 miles a week it suddenly  became more interesting.   I saw some plans on the university of colorado website if I remember right.   They converted a tractor using a garbage can and a 55 gallon drum for combustion and a five gallon paint can for a filter.  We regularly generate about a ton a week of grading scrap and falloff in our moulding business.  So this seems very interesting way to discard scrap instead of filling a dumpster.

Found this link you might find interesting also.  The colorado school of mines also did coal gasification research.  Just beware of carbon monoxide dangers.  We used to produce coke oven gas and it stank and could asphyxiate you at the same time.

Throw some ribs in there on the way to work to smoke while you are driving and you lunch would be ready around noon.
