I just want one small enough to use easily with one hand. Shorter than 2 feet.

Where do you guys buy your Garretts? I went to their website and they weren't very forthcoming about sales, want you to sign up and send them all your info first before they tell you the price. I want to just order the blame thing and be done with it.

well i've been sawing now for a few years first with a chainsaw mill and for the last year with home built bandsaw mill.  most of the trees i get are yard trees and so far i've been pretty lucky with hitting metal......UNTIL TODAY!  i picked up 4 or 5 old walnut logs from a craigslist ad.  the logs had been sitting on the ground for several years but i picked them up cheap.  when i was loading them up last fall i noticed a couple of nails on the outside of one of the logs and thought:  "hmmm i better be careful with these...."

holy mother of mary.  i started sawing the butt log (around 20" by 10') and very quickly hit a nail.  darn, well hopefully that'll be ZING! oh crap another one man that ZING! ZING! sucks but i'd better ZING! keep sawing this ZING! log.  that's right, i hit 5 nails in one pass!!!  switched blades turn log ZING!  well i ended up with some nice firewood and a few blunt bands.   :D :D

the next log was no better.  i hit more nails in one pass than i've hit in the last few years of sawing.  this is for every goofball trying to sell me their yard trees for hundreds of dollars:  nail infested yard trees exist!! and bands aren't cheap.  thanks for listening to my rant.   ;D ;D

Just thought I would mention that I've dealt with the Kellyco Co. out of Florida, Ocalla Fl. if I remember right. My dealings were with them were for gold detecting machines.
I would think they can get just about any detector you may want and run specials all the time through email notices for a wide variety of machines.
Good service, returned my calls and called me when they said they would.
No, we are not affiliated with eachother, I was impressed with their customer service.

I got lucky cutting 12-14 logs with CSM and went right over and right under a screw on one of the last 1" boards & cut the screw head off when edging with a hand circular saw.
I have a gold detector that will find a staple and #8 birdshot but did not use it..... but think I would have if cutting with a bandmill.
I did some chainsaw milling, learning sketchup & timber framing for home projects but not an expert..... I learn as I go and go as I learn.

I use a White DFX...its a treasure hunter model, but will find a nail deep in a log...But you can't use use it if the log is on the mill or even close to any large metal object...I hit a nail this evening and had to take the cant off the mill to check it further..It was in the middle of a 24 in log.....That was the only time I have ever found just one nail...Banjo
Never explain, your friends don't need it, and your enemies won't believe you any way.

Well, I just got around to trying to order it through Kellyco. I get on the website, and would you know, it's on sale! Excellent. Then I go to add it to my cart, and would you know, it's discontinued.

Well, I called them this morning to make sure, and they confirmed they actually do have it, that was just a website error, so I ordered it over the phone. I should have it now in time to check the two custom walnut logs I just brought back last night. Since I won't be doing them for a week or two.  :-*

Sorry I missed this earlier.  My Wizard is the II and it cost about $100.  The new one is a III

It will find nails that you would hit on the next pass, but not much deeper.  I am OK with it, but it is what it is.  I am not spending a couple hundred $$$ that I don't have on something that I don't need.

I would think that a White would be top of the line.

I guess I have to scan the log before putting it on the mill.  :-\ I'm glad it's that sensitive, sort of, but I would like to scan on down through as I mill.
