metal detector for wood

hi there i just got off the german forum of treasure finders and wanted to get an answer on metal detectors from them seams they only search for gold and coins.  well has anyone out there a metal detector in use and what exactly do they show?? the size ? the depht? the place?  what. 
i have a peterson and had a lot of nails and wire lately on free give away trees, no wonder,.... but there was a lot of beautiful wood in there.  but also one blade gone with all the teeth lost. 
well who uses a detector and wich.
ones that are pointed out to me so far are from whites and cti special for wood.
does anyone have experience with one of these?
