It has been near 8 years since we moved the forum to it's current server. Early 2010. In Internet years, that is an eternity. We have now outlasted the usefulness and functionality of our server. I can no longer update our forum software due to the outdated supporting software on the server. I am not longer able to upgrade the supporting software due to the outdated and now end of life version of the Linux Debian Operating System. We have also used up a lot of our physical memory and many times taxing our RAM So we have to move. No easy task.
Many of the slow-downs in the last couple months is due to some of these things. Trying to run back ups of an ever increasing database and supporting files, as well as the tools to fight off all the badguys all take RAM that we at times don't have enough of.
I've set in motion the creation of our new bigger badder up-to-date server. Once it is installed, I'll be doing some preliminary moving and testing. At some point, I will need to shut the gallery down first. It may be a couple three days before the final move. All the pictures will be there in the posts, but there will not be way to add new ones until we are ready on the new machine.
Once I am confident that the new server will support the forum, and have the bugs worked out, we will make the move. I will put the forum into maintenance mode so the database can not be altered as I back it up and prepare it for the move. Once backed up, it will then be installed on the new server. If that goes right, then at that point we will point the forestry forum address to the new server.
Potential trouble spots when we first get moved.
Potentially bookmarks may fail. You may need to type in the address and make a new bookmark
our search function may not work right away, as that is a third party software that I do not know id is compatible with the new operating system.
Others I may not even have considered.
I'll try to give everyone as much of a heads-up when and where and what as possible. It could be within the next week. I somehoe picked up the flu, so, sitting and thinking is about all im able to do right now anyhow, I just can't make a mistake on what my job is related to where I am sitting. ;)
Wish me luck! I'm dreading this as much as the last time it had to happen.
Good luck to our fearless Leader!!
May your bugs be few.
Yes,I wish you luck.
Got my fingers crossed too.
Get better!
Thanks Jeff, may the force of the porcelain gods be with you! Get well!!
Luck? We don't need no stinking luck! We have The Jeff.
Problem is, the Jeff ain't what he use ta be. :-\
Thanks for your work making this upgrade. Hope the flu leaves you soon.
This all sounds like a lot of hard work AND COSTLY. I suggest anyone that wants to assist should go to the main page and click on Support Forestry Forum with PayPal.

Any complications moving the "FF toolbox"?

Jeff's going to be 60, I can't even remember that far back! You're still young.
Jeff, my prayers are for your quick recovery and for an easy as possible transition to the new server. Good luck.

Hey Jeff
It is hard to believe its been that long since the last move. I Joined just bit ahead of that. Good luck in the work of getting the move done again.
Take the time you need to get as right as you possibly can on the first round. A Methodical, Steady process will serve well to get it done as you are very much aware.
Good luck!
Get to feeling better first, been there the last week or so and I did get a shot. Hope it all goes well and thank you very much for all the work you do for us!
Good luck Jeff! More importantly, feel better soon!

Nooooo, that would be a bad idea.
It's warm here, and the beer is cold. If Jeff was here I'd have to help, and then we would end up drinking beer in the sun, and... well, it might be ages before the forum was working again. :D
Drinking beer in the sun and fixing computers is a bad combo. Fix your computers, THEN drink the beer. ;D
Hope your feeling better and everything goes good on the switch over. I'm hoping it might be easier to post pictures then. But if not my 4 year old Grandson Probly could show me how to do it now.
I'm so new, it took me three days to notice the big, bold Announcement (I've never been the brightest bulb in the chandelier) at the top of every page I went to......
I can tell, with all the "Love" and support you're getting from FF Members, you'll do just fine. I'll add my prayers, as well.
Don't take too much guff about turning 60, they tell me at work that..... "Sixty is the new er... Sixty!"
Besides, I can't remember a time I've felt better than I do right now (because I can't remember anything!).
Fare thee well!
Welcome to the Forestry Forum, olcowhand!
olcowhand,welcome to the forum.
Under that announcement is a line, starts out with Home,Help,Search,go to Extras,a drop down will appear and there is alot of information there. More will open up for you the longer you are here and post.
Thecfarm, Thanks for the advice. Even before I became a member, I would use the tool box and Dictionary to try to understand what my neighbors were talking about.
I really appreciate the helpful spirit of everyone in FF.
Thanks Jeff for all the hard work keeping this forum up and running. I don't post often as I have no mill but one is in my future. I keep reading and learning from all the good folks of the FF. I hope the move goes smoothly and your avatar tells it all I'm scared just thinking about it😨😨😨. Get well and happy New Year . :new_year:
Good luck Jeff. I have changed enough servers with my own sites that I understand the ultimate pain in the butt it is.
Latest news on this is I don't have any. Still waiting for news the server is built and on the rack. I'm sure the Linux techs were off for the holidays. I expect by next weelines to be knee deep into it.
good luck and thanks
Jeff - you mean the servers not in a closet in your bathroom?
To run a website with the traffic the forestry forum gets, the servers need to be in a major data center to handle it. The forestry forum gets upwards at times of 10,000,000 page views a month.

Talk to Hillary, she can hook you up with a good used server. :D
No interest.

I went back and looked, we didn't actually have any months this last calendar year with over 10,000,000, but we had a few with over 9 million. :) We had two months the year before with just over 10, but this past year, we actually for the year, had more for 12 months. The late summer and fall in through Christmas is historically our slow time on the forum, then it really picks up after Christmas as people are spending a whole lot more time inside on the computer.
Here is this years stats:

"HEY JULIE......TURN THE LIGHT ON!"
Still awaiting the new server to be put on the network. If it happens today, expect the gallery to be shutdown as first step.
oh man just when I was going to learn how to post pics :D :D
There is a real chance that photo posting may change radically. I'm not exactly sure what to do yet. THe coppermine software that the gallery runs on is not supported by the new versions of php that we have to go to. For awhile, this is going to be a total cluster. I made a comment earlier in the topic. It wasn't concerning my age, it was concerning my ability to think through these tech dilemmas that I used to be able to conquer with relative ease. My mind simply does not work the way it used to and it is concerning to say the least.
I thought that only happened to me. :)
Good luck. We're with you all the way.
Funny thing is, some people will be glad to see the current way of posting photos change. This is one the few forums I visit that doesn't have a bunch of x's everywhere a picture is supposed to be.
Whatever happens, we'll be fine. You have my sympathy. I've been told that the liberal internal use distilled spirits can be used to offset the negative effects of server migration. Don't know for sure about that, it's just what I've heard.
If the FF is down for more than an hour, I'm going to get the DT's.
Yea, me too.
Jeff -
Growing up in the central part of Aroostook County Maine as I kid I thought the band "Da Yoopers" was actually a local band as some folks sound just like that. "I wanna buy that garage there and move it to my camp - it gonna make a good wood shed" - it was not until I joined the Forum that I actually learned that Yoopers were from your neck of the woods. Well anyway, I don't know if it's all the same but as long as things don't end up "All stove up something wicked" I am sure it will be "Good Sleddin" after the move.
I have a simple solution for posting pictures: everyone sends in 35mm film to Jeff to be developed and the photos then scanned manually via dial up connection. :D
Best of luck with the switch. You have my sympathy.
That was pretty much the way the forum started, except you then had to reduce the pics down to no more than 15k cause Jeff was paying for the bandwidth out of his pocket.
Hope it turns out to be poplar, not hickory.I too hope to see yall on the farside. Gracious thanks for getting us thus far.cheers john
Update: Well, the Linux admin in charge of building our new server messaged me apologizing for the delay. Turns out he went home sick, so nothing will probably happen now until next week. That's okay , as I've has a relapse as well and don't feel like doing squat. Well, maybe everything squat.

QuoteJeff,
I have the networking set up, am making a few finishing touches on the bench, and then racking this up.

And I'm still waiting. :-\
Will we see any drastic changes from a new server or business as usual?
You should see far less slowdowns because the new server will have 5 times the ram and 5 times the physical memory. We were only at about 35% on using up our storage memory on this server, so the new one gives us tons of space for the future. We still have tons of space here, but its the hardware and software life that has forced the change.
There could be issues with the search, and perhaps the gallery when we get switched over, maybe some slowness until I get things optimized. I'll find a way to work over any hurtles that may pop up. Today I spent the afternoon relearning and practicing unix commands and syntax that I had forgotten in regards to copying compressing and transferring files via ssh, tar gzip and scp. The files and directories supporting the forestry forum and the gallery, NOT counting the database, is well over 1 million.
Good luck Jeff on the update.

All kidding aside: THANKS!
Your efforts are appreciated in so many un-expressed ways.

The screen is still rolling like it was....
I do not know what I am talking about but do you like put it in zip form?
I am picturing the scene from the end of the movie "War Games" when all the computer screens are flashing constantly, numbers everywhere, complete chaos, then it all goes blank for a few tense moments before "Hello Jeff - Do you want to post topic?" appears.
yes, its actually a tar.gz file. The server right now is gathering, compiling and compressing into one archive file, a gzip file. That roll of files are what are being added to the zip file. Once it is done, as long as it isnt corrupt, I can then move the one file to the new server for the gallery. This is the biggest move. Then comes everything else. Then the last back up data bases which I will use to test. Once I think everything is going to work, I shut the forum down and do a final database up date from here and move that over., then we move forestryforum.com to the new I.P. address on the new server nd re-open for business. The first day, things may try to bounce back and forth until the DNS propagates through the internet.

I have two modes. Artsy Fartsy Mode and Code Mode. The two can't meet. Its kinda like crossing streams on ghost busters. My mind might explode. I am officially in code mode. Well in the second hour of watching the screen roll and doing other things I can do on the new server to ready it
Did you order the flux capacitor on the new server?
YEA! It Finished! Now time to move this one over.
The scr is rolling again. The gz gallery file has been moved to the new server and is now extracting.
there may be some slowdowns as I tar other directories, bbut they should not be to bad. I'll need to stop the forum for a little bit soon to make a database back up for testing.

Been there done that. Glad its you :)
Thanks :)
I would be lost without this forum and all my new friends.
Update. Having troubles restoring a back up database on the new server. It ran all night and is still less than 5%. I may have to do something you guys won't like. I may have to empty the tables that show what you have read. The smf_board_log and smf_board_topcs together are almost 6,000,000 records. It takes a lot of data to keep track of where you are in every topic and what you have read and haven't read. I don't wnt to do it, and I am exploring other options, but be forewarned, it may have to come to that. And it will be twice. Once just to be able to create a backup here to use for testing, then one again when we do the final move.
I'm tired out already and it hasn't hardy began.
give me a reason to find old topics i need to reread :)
Seeings how I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about with gigs, rams, etc. ect. you have my complete respect and admiration for what you do for all of us. Go take a nap, don't let the streams cross and don't make us call in doctorb to give you orders :). Although a few of us here may go through withdrawls and possibly a seizure or 2 it'll all work out in the end so do what you gotta do, thanks for everything!
I can live with that. Seems like a small price to pay for a big benefit.
THis attempt has been aborted. I'm having them change the operating sytem and related software versions on the new server. If it takes longer than today, I'll reopen the gallery and just have to back it up again for the next try, but I'd rather not if I can avoid it, as that takes two hours.

This morning I thought about this, the definition of crazy. Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.
I've had a eureka moment. I think I've worked past my problems. Don't know for sure, but I've got a test database actually compiling this time in a timely fashion. When it finishes. I can see if I can get a working forum on the new server to test.

Reminds me of this old joke
I was walking past a tall wooden fence the other day, you know the kind you see outside a building site. As I walked along beside it I heard chanting coming from behind the fence further up... they were chanting numbers, or rather just one number.
"Thirteen, thirteen, thirteen, thirteen, ..." they excitedly chanted. It sounded like a small crowd, young and old; men, women and children. All of them saying the same number over and over.
As I approached I saw a small hole in the fence just big enough to look through. The hole was right where the sound appeared to be originating from.
So, with the crowd continuing to chant "... thirteen, thirteen, thirteen, thirteen" and it seeming to become more intense as I leaned down to place my eye at the hole and work out what was happening in there.
Just as I put my eye to the hole a small finger like that of a child poked me in the eye and the crowd stared cheered loudly and started chanting again..
"Fourteen, fourteen, fourteen..."
As an update, ran into some more issues with time outs on the way the database was being backed up, loosing part of it. I've worked out how to get past that, so I'm currently trying to restore the test database again on the new server with a backup I now now is complete. If this works this time, and we end up with a functional test forum, I may put the forum into maintenance mode tonight and make the actual move. Lots to do before then. We'l see.
Thanks Jeff for struggling thru this .
WE HAVE A TEST FORUM!!
8) 8) 8)
We have a working test forum and a working test gallery. Actually, the gallery is not a test, since I locked it down, it is complete as it is. I'm now awaiting word from the server farm because I am PITHED OFF!
Looking at the new server running in a command window, I noticed something. It has the same amount of ram as the current server! It was supposed to have twice as much. They may have to take it down to add ram to it. One of the reasons the move was being made is that they deemed we were running out of memory at times. DUH! THEN GIVE ME MORE FLIPPIN MEMORY!
They are taking the server down in a few minutes and doubling the ram. While I was waiting, I and another clown ran around in the new forum with a can of virtual spray paint. I posted a political view on the general bord and got warned for major profanity. All is good! (that will be over written with the move)
But I thought I would copy this from there... (I aint saying who did it)
RAY LOVES grits SO MUCH HE ASKED ME TO SEND HIM A CASE OF IT AND NOT TELL ANY MEMBER ABOUT IT! I'm gonna ship it tomorrow.
:D :D :D :D :D :D i just peed in my fur! :D :D :D :D :D

If JEFF does something rash and agin' the rules, does the Goat take the Boss out to the woodshed?
.... or is that agin' them rules?

Whoo hooo Jeff, congrats on creating the test site!

I don't have anything to do with the Wood Shed except the yard. Jeff makes me keep the grass cut and weed eating done. I just try to make it look nice for those that "check in". ;D
I'm looking at making the live move later this evening. If everything goes as planed, the backup and restore on the other site should take less than two hours. We will then point www.forestryforum.com at the new I.P. address. I'll put the old forum in permanent maintenance mode when I begin. When you see the forum live again, you can use it as normal. I will still have the search function and perhaps some other things to sort out, but I can do that in a live environment.
Good job Jeff!

Hi all, from a wet and windy UK.
Just noticed this post while perusing the forum.
I take it you're now running php 7.1 ? If you still have a test site you could try Coppermine 1.6 this runs on php 7 and is about as stable as it's going to be, due for release soon. Some of the plugins have yet to be updated but if you're not running too many you might be ok. Bridges ok with SMF 2.0.15 as well.
bad news. I,thecfarm,Ray,is moving. I will leave no forwarding address. I have my reasons to live the home that I built up to be a great home to me all these years. There is one box that will be leaving with me. It means a lot to me. Kinda like a Christmas present that your MIL gave you,you don't want it,but you have to keep it.
Doc..Doc.... We made it Back to the Future!!!
Great job Jeff !!
Well, I think the DNS is propagating as planned and I think I have pretty much everything tidied up at least for now. I'd say theDNS will be fully propagated by morning. HEY! It is morning! AGAIN!
Time for me to get some sleep! I have more Forestry Forum hosted websites to move tomorrow to the new server, as well as try and figure out the search. Gallery should be good to go! :)

Gallery should be good to go! :)
I tried to upload a couple pictures (same source as usual). At the end of the upload, the box with the file name that slowly goes blue, changed to red and says "-- Unable to create thumbnail or reduced size image." :-\
Everything looks good Jeff, but might have to take a look at photo uploading.
In the upload area it says: "Destination directory ................. is not writable by the script". Something minor I'm sure. ;)
I haven't tried the picture thing for a couple of years simply because I have a touch of computer ADD or something .In other words my patience level when it comes to computers is limited to about microseconds .However if there are improvements I'll give it a shot again if I find it warrants a picture .Thank you in advance .
All is working fine, with what I am doing. Good job!!
Congratulations on the move!!! Nice job Jeff!
WOOT!
Good job and thanks for all the work you do Jeff!
I tried to upload pictures:
Quote
-- Destination directory albums/userpics/20011/ is not writable by the script!
So there is some more tweaking to do with the Gallery.
Good show Jeff, I know that weren't fun
We connected ;)

There were some settings on the old server that I had tweaked over time. One of them being the allowable file size for upload I went in on this server this morning and edited the default. I think that was the problem. Someone give it a try

Works
Congrats on the smooth transition, Jeff. It appears to have been less painful than some of the previous ones. Good job! :)
It was actually pretty rough on my end, but I had learned from experience how to keep that from translating to the live environment.
Thank you for the thank yous. :)
Everything that I have tried is up and running. Three pictures added in the "Magic Bucks" topic. 8)
8) I like it 8)
Thanks Jeff!
thanks jeff 8) 8) dont shoot me but is it easer to post pics now or is it the same ;D
It's still easy. ;D
BANG!
Its always been easy. Obviously, because I had to move over a quarter million images.
Some people learning to tie your shoes is hard, once they do it a couple times, they see it as easy. First work on your shoes, then work on the photo posting ;) :D
coxy don't wear shoes?? :o
How you keep da snow from between your toes ???
I miss the old server already. :'( :'( :'(
It was as if we were one.
Jeff, thanks! The upload now works (for me).
Next step - the Insert Link button does not seem to work. Had to copy the img code to the post.
On Search, it takes you to the first post. It used to take you to the last post of a thread. :-\

Seems to work for me. Clear your cache. Could be the new dns is messing you up.
You da man Boss, you need some 'me' time now. 8)
We have search now. We will see how it works. I created an index for the SMF internal search to work.We were using sphinx search, a third party software, but Ive not been able to get that configured correctly yet. We may have plnty of RAM now tohandle the out of the box search. We'll see.
It seems to be settled down for me. It was a little glitchy first thing this morning, I suspect it was which path the packets where taking through the net as it learned where the new server is ??? My computer expertise is limited to, pull your punch if'n you don't want a new one.
I'm here!
Ahhhh, I love that new server smell...

seems to be working great here...
I have done about everything that I regularly do such as pictures, search, links, etc. All OK. :)
For those of you on tablets., let me know if this worked. With the updates I was able to acheie something that may make reading the forum easier on those. If it works right, the sponsors will jump from the side, making the forum wider, and move to the bottom.
Is it working for you?
I was getting a little nervous, all this geek stuff is way over my head. I am glad it worked relatively pain free and with little disruption. Well done Jeff!!
Wow, it logged me in in a little over a second and seems snappy now. Thanks Jeff. 8)

It it working great on my Samsung tab A tablet. It is so great to have the full width , makes everything less distracting and easy to read. Having bigger tabs for the sponsors makes them easier to find and click on. Plenty of room for more sponsors now. The smileys open in a new full tab now that makes it easier to pick one. I am using firefox Thanks Jeff smiley_thumbsup
Good to hear that all went well in the transfer Jeff, hats off to ya man! A scene in a Star Trek movie comes to my mind where Scotty picks up the mouse and says to it "hello computer" :D
Jeff
Glad to hear that the upgrades went well. Thanks so much for all the work you and others put into this forum. One of the few places on the web that I visit regularly.
Cheers
Ken

I was smuggling Grits under my shirt. :D
Good job Jeff!!! WOW it's FAST!!!
On my tablet I like to use the full sight just because it more like my PC, but on my phone it is much better with the ads at the bottom.
Am I the only one that isn't getting notifications? For example, this thread had two pages of replies after I visited it this morning and there was no notification in my in box. I'm hoping that once I've opened a thread that I'll start getting notifications. We'll see.
Once again, thanks Jeff for all your hard work.
There should be notifications now. I think.
Everything seems to be working good here on my Android phone :)
I like the way it works on the tablet now. All good on all things. Good job. Thanks for all your hard work Jeff.
I went on a roadtrip with my son............... I come back to a whole new system and I missed all the fun! I like that.
Thanks Jeff.
Just returned from a week in the mountains of Colorado. When I needed to login again I knew you had made the move!
Sure looks nice. Thanks for all the hard work.
Much quicker in the evenings. Use to bog down a bit late afternoon/evening. :)
First time I got this message....

You posted in that thread, you posted in this thread, and you accompanied it with a photo. I'm not concerned. :)
I like the wide format easier to read through my bifickles.
:D I had to go on a hunt for my password because I've auto connected for years .It must be okay I'm still here .
I'm sure you're busy so no need to rush a response. I can log in on firefox but not safari
i can offer no support for safari. No clue. I would say dump all rwmp files as a suggestion.

STUMPY,
I 'm running Safari on my Macs. I've not had any problems. The only thing I had to do was, last night....
had to log back in to FF on all my devices.
Make sure you have updated to 11.2.2
I had to log in too, now I can put pix in my gallery but can't post them in a thread.
All looks the same here, posting like I use to,
You mean you can't put them in with one click. You certainly my can still put them in a post.

No Problem, I can use Firefox. Just thought you'd like to know.
Hi Jeff! I have a question. Is it too much trouble to go back to 10 pages of recent posts vs. the 5 we have now? I don't log on as often, and I know I miss a lot. Just a question...no criticism. Thanks.
I have to use this now.
Instructions: Click on code below to highlight, then right click and select copy (Ctrl c). This will copy the code below to your "clipboard". You may now paste this code where ever you would like the above photo to appear when making your post.
Than when I preview it is there.
I can not use the button that says,Insert Image In Post.
Is there an easy way to delete photos that are not used in post. As loading the same photo when trying to learn how to load and post photos. Some of us still have a hard time tying our boots :D
Well yes and no.
You have to make sure the picture you are deleting is not the one you used in a post. There is a delete button when you click onto to post a pictures. I think there are more when you edit one too.
BUT you have to make sure that picture does not have a link to a post. :P :P and :P
Is there a way to tell what one was use in a post :-\
Kinda. Go to the reply where you posted a picture, click on "Modify", you can now see the file# of the picture that you posted.

I've looked into this before, and I want to quote my findings from one of the software engineers that designed and developed our software when someone else was insisting they help him do what you guys are asking for.
Quote from: Kindred on August 06, 2017, 06:49:42 PM
I don't think that you understand what you are asking for.
The "recent posts" request is one of the most "expensive" database requests (in terms of server processing power)
This has been PURPOSEFULLY limited to avoid overloading servers... and having people's accounts suspended by hosts for overuse of shared system resources.
We don't have to worry about accounts suspended here, because this is not a shared server, it is OUR server, however, we don't want to have it stall out because we increased the load on something we should not tinker with.
Just tried to put a pix here.
Tried a bunch of ways no go.
Ok, I'll try.
Clicked "insert image in post" nothing happened.
Copied and pasted.

It has to be something cached in your computers referring to the old server or something. I put this in with a click. Others have as well. THe work around is certainly just to copy and paste the code into the post.
I'll try again after clearing all things cached.
Nope.
I'll try one more thing.
