Title: Is this hickory?
Post by: rank on May 07, 2017, 10:01:23 PM

 first I thought ironwood.
Then someone told me elm. Now I think shagbark hickory. It's hard. Thanks. (https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/44721/IMG_20170504_153952823~1.jpg?easyrotate_cache=1494208531)

Looks like hickory to me.  Not Elm.  Not familiar with Ironwood.

Where you located?  It's not in your profile.

Don't know about other places, but around here, ironwood is blue beech and looks like muscles.

That looks like shagbark hickory to me.

Ironwood = hop hornbeam.

Definitely not hophornbeam   I am in the leaning towards hickory by the bark but I don't get to see much elm.  The end grains don't look much like hickory here but then again I have never seen a tree that far north. Danny will be by soon enough, I am just not sure

Thanks

Buck

Yes, it is shagbark hickory.  I love that beautiful heartwood color.

Looks like hickory to me. My uncle has both red and white elm trees, dead and alive, and the bark is different than the tree in your pic.

It doesn't look like any elm I've ever seen in my neck of the woods. I didn't know if hickory grew that far north but the bark, the wood and the tree in general all look like the hickory that i'm used to seeing.

Since I am 60 miles due west of Rochester I can say that is definitely shagbark hickory. ;D
