Can anyone ID this tree? It was lying on the floor. I managed to find one leaf....potentially ash? The bark sort of looks like basswood but the rings seem too close together for basswood. I don't recognize the heart wood. Location is the north shore of Lake Ontario

Bark does look bass, cut looks like ash tho, you sure can tell which when you you drop a saw in it!
I've been doing some web searching.....butternut?
.
By golly, I am pretty sure that is called firewood around here.
I know, I know, but I jest couldn't help it.
Ash. Definitely not butternut.

Yes firewood......Someone wants to cook with wood and they want specific types of hardwoods.
Yes, ash.
I guess everyone agrees :) Can you tell if it's black ash or white?
Definitely not black ash.
Clark
White ash.
My first reaction was Ash.
I feel real certain it is basswood, those odd shaped brown hearts are a dead giveaway. Dry some and it will be light and it is soft and absorbs a splitting maul.
