Just putting this out there to see if anyone has interest.
By any means is this like the project last fall.
I want to get together mill some logs
Cherry, yellow birch or spalted maple.
I can show some folks what works for me selling on FB groups.
Have some food and maybe we can get one of the new kiln venders to come in and give up a presentation.
If we have it at my place someone would have to push the mill for me.
Just a thought
Bruno
Hmmmmmm?!
Now that is the way to kick it in the "butt log" and get things moving Jim. Good for your idea and I look forward to watching you Glaciated Guys get together and having some fun. :)
Let me know when.
Jim Rogers
Let us know when, sounds good to me.

I can't just sit around and stew.
I need to stay motivated some way.
I like a northern project but can we wait until it's warm out like the Southern project!
Looking at the month of May?
Count us in, Jim
Keep us posted as you get the plan together. I think your location is still in my gps.
Oliver and Harriett
Yes, would be very interested, I will keep an eye on this thread. Please update me as the plans evolve.
We are interested. Nancy is ready for a nice road trip. I hope the dates work out.
I would be interested in making a trip to meet and learn from some of you guys. I may not have any knowledge to share, but I have capable hands! I will stay tuned for a time and place.

If you have never gone to a gathering like this it's a lot of fun.
Last year it was great to put a face to the name.
The fellowship is awesome.
Newwoodguy needs to come and run the tractor and mill for me.
May might be a good time for me. How are the black flies in your part of the world then?
I would be up for another one depending on the date. Last one was ton of fun and great meeting everyone.

What do you guys think about April 27 for a date?

I have my Mother Jackie helping out with the food.
I told her to make more meatballs this time😁

Jim:
That is the date of the Wood-Mizer Maine open house.
You might want to attend that open house.
Gerald
I ll have to pass again due to conflicts. May have to just drop in (after a phone call) on Bruno some other time.
Not so good here either. Logger's Plus Expo in Bloomsburg, PA and on to see our daughter in Ohio.
I'll bring extra bug dope to share if a later date has a black fly problem.
Would this be at your place or Peter's?
I had a great time last year.
My place
I haven't asked Peter yet
How about on May the weekend after the loggers show
I can't do it without Oliver and his wife
If it's at my place
I have a dog so she will be running around
Petefrom Bearswamp
I will show you how to sell your slabs on FB if you want
I only have the May 18 weekend open, it awould be better for Cathy and I. April 27 is usually the last weekend to put our sugar bush to bed Before blackflie season.
We will be there whatever weekend Bruno can get the most of us there. We're retired, so the schedule is pretty flexible.
Anyway, that would make an excuse to go to the Paul Bunyan show................
She's got me booked for her quilt show in Essex sometime in June, too.
Weekend of May 18 is the loggers show in Maine I think
How about May 4th
I want as many to come as we can get.
I always do a cinco de mayo party. your all welcome to come :)

I loved it last year and I like to return. What's on the program beside the help for selling slab ? Is there will be some sawing like last year (hoping )?
This gathering is more a social, discussions and demonstration gathering, not a sawing gathering.
Jim Rogers
We will be sawing some demonstration logs.
Anyone that would like to show or talk about sawing, drying, planing, felling, skidding and firewood processing is welcome.
Building and woodworking.
Any forum sponsor's are welcome to attend .
Networking benefits us all
I believe
I will stay tuned to this station to find out where all the sawdust settles. Then I will come if at all possible. It was a great time last year at Peter`s.
I'd like to firm up the date
I have some sponsors that might be able to attend they need a date.
Thanks Bruno
You earlier suggested May 4, and that works for us.

Studying the map to plan a trips that avoids the big cities in the NE.
From Charlotte 77 north to I-81 all the way to Scranton, PA, lot of trucks - but no cities, then 84 East (Newburgh Bridge)- after you cross into CT there really are no good ways to avoid cities. Hartford is not too bad as long as you don't try it during commute hours - it's nothing like Atlanta - after that it's Worcester, MA but you can go to the west of it and it's not as bad - traffic will begin to peter out as you get toward the NH line. Aside from the Newburgh bridge and a short section of the Mass pike I don't recall any other tolls along that road either, maybe one in NH - I don't know where Bruno is exactly, 95 is a whole different story and you don't want to go there!!

If I may: SS is right about the CT issue (my kin who live there call it the constipation state). Follow SS's route up to 84, BUT, turn north on the NYS Thruway (87) and take that to the mass pike, then East on the pike and take either the Worcester route, OR depending on time, take 495 around Boston. The Worcester route can be very tight, the Boston route less so and more straight, however Boston will be much worse during weekdays anytime near commuter hours, Worcester will be a lot less so. I used to run this route twice a month or more and did them both, too often. The CT route has a very low chance of being clear all the way through. Wish I could join y'all.
Edit, you WILL have tolls on this route.
I have never been on 84 when it was not a parking lot. I have traveled it many different times of day and night.
Beginning of may is good for me. Hope that I will be able to camp in the sand pit again. Top souvenirs
Camping in the back area is open for anyone wanting to.
Thanks for the route tips. We are looking forward to using them.

Quite true, but weighing the options... The section from PA to NY has had some epic jams due the jacknifes that cover both lanes, I sat there for a week one day. But once you get into CT, it is just heavy traffic, seems like all day and night and it gets worse as you turn north toward Hartford. The section up to the Thruway is not statistically too bad, and from there up to Worcesters should be speed limit driving (or better ;D).
Of course, life is like a box of chocolates. If anybody runs into trouble coming up the Thruway or needs a break, give me a holler. I am just 15 minutes from Exit 19 in Kingston.
It looks like at least a few people are good for the 4th. I'll have to put in for the vacation time, we just had a big confusing policy change on vacation time, so whatever date everybody comes up with I'll try for. Once I know I can get the time, I'll make the same offer as last year. I'll stop at Logrite on the way to save shipping. I'll post it when I know. 84 isn't great, but it's opened back up through Waterbury again, so it's better. Or it's just my senses are so dull from driving it every day. Every. Single. Day
I drive all over CT of course and around NY. You just need to avoid rush hours around certain areas.
The feature of Google Maps where you can choose what time you are departing or going through an area is very good at predicting delays due to congestion .
Also Apple map on i-phone is very good at predicting travel time and alerting/suggesting alternate routes during travel.
If you're driving in the middle of the night there's nothing wrong with I-95 across the GWB and through the Bronx, unless you break down.
If you get a date set I'd be interested to help where I could. Wouldn't mind learning more about marketing a definite shortcoming of mine.

I am pretty sure thats what he said :)
I won't be able to make it this year but sure had a good time last year.
Be careful on 84. It is narrow.
Parts of 84 are not all that great.
That is the stretch of road a tractor trailer ran me off of last year. Down into a clump of saplings. Lucky it wasn't 1/4 mile further up the road. Nothing but a solid wall of rock.
There is no birm on that stretch of 84. Just a couple inch drop off the asphalt onto shail.

You didn't get to drive that home, I'm guessing.
Nope. I had triple A haul it 99 miles then brought a trailer down to haul it the other 100 miles home.
Considering what I have read in earlier posts, looking like we will go further North and go by Cooperstown and the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Good idea, I'd suggest heading east after to I87 north. It was voted one of Americas scenic highways. Once you get up north aways you can take one of the ferrys across lake Champlain to Vermont. I doubt you'd be disappointed.
I-87 Exit 28, Rte 74 into Ticonderoga, then north at Maplefields on Rte 9 up about 4 miles north of Crown point, take a right and go across the bridge to Vermont.
Nice new bridge very scenic, govt does something right once in a while.
You can see the demo of the old bridge here: lake champlain bridge demolition (https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=lake+champlain+bridge+demolition&&view=detail&mid=5F701AF39D718F3C0E0F5F701AF39D718F3C0E0F&&FORM=VRDGAR)

Morning folks
Member Curved - wood has offered to come to my place 2 days before the Northern Project to give a class on building a curved shed.
If you have not seen his book his work is wonderful and an art form.
I will supply the lumber ( if anyone is local I might need some help).
This will be a Great learning and fellow ship opportunity for all.
I have the food covered for the May 4th day.
Some ideas
Food for the 2 days before
Help sawing the cut list
I might have enough hardware nails ext.
Maybe a travel donation for curved- wood
I have room for camping
This is a wonderful opportunity for us.
Let me know what you all think☺
Bruno
I'll see how much response you get, Bruno, but we would at least be able to come over a day early, if not for both days. I enjoyed Claude's book, and while I may never create anything nearly as nice as he makes, I am fascinated by his skill and eye for beauty.
Let us know how we may help make this a great gathering to learn and rekindle friendships.
See you all in May!!!!!!
See the Curved - wood project thread
Please
I am going to combine the topics. This is actually the same event, so to avoid confusion I'm putting them together
Sounds good thank you Sir
Here is a little bit of precision about the workshop that I would like to give:
- 2 or 3 days.
-Build a small garage on the spot at Bruno's place.
-Stick framing
-How to build a curved roof, step by step, tricks to gain time. Much more simpler than it looks.
-For beginners as well as the more experienced.
- Built with all rough wood coming from a portable mill. No plywood.
- Cost for participant: a voluntary contribution for helping to pay the cost of the materials, hardware and if food is supplied.
- my charge : 0$. Life is good for me
An experience about sharing.
The shape could look similar to the one on the next photo but smaller and without the sculpture beside the door.

Awesome! That's a head snapper! Gotta look at it more than once!!
I'm definitely interested in helping on that building for a couple days. Let me know what I can do to help.
I have plenty of logs might need some help milling the cut list.
I haven't been able to hire a helper yet for Spring.
We will have to set up for the garage dimension first. After that the cutting list will come up. As a starting 2x4 if your logs have small knots, or 2x6 with a bit larger knots. I always choose the specific use of my boards according to the grain and the knots. Also we could use some live edge as in the following small wood shed frame(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/48698/20180306_092204.jpg?easyrotate_cache=1521303318)

I'm so looking forward to this☺
Curved-wood - How long have you been at your trade? By chance did you build a couple of older tobacco barns on our farm? The roof lines and walls look a lot like that!! :D Of course for very different reasons.... You Sir do some beautiful work!!

No I've never built a tobacco barn.
As a teenager I've worked in construction for my summers jobs. My first own curved construction was my own house 40 years ago. You could see some pictures on claudedrolet.com , click on English version and click on constructions. You will see some other interesting curved constructions.

There is a lot of possibilities. I need a PM to give me precision.
Here is a small wood shed for wood stove done with a curved live-edge frame. Those live-edge are too narrow for my market. That shed is small so I go move it easily with the backhoe , fill my wood in closed to the pile and store it till winter. I would like to built a bit bigger at Bruno's and more a stick frame.(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/48698/bruno_mars_129.jpg?easyrotate_cache=1552251855)
Nancy and I plan to come, number 8 and 9. I don't think we will get there in time for the Curved wood project, but look forward to seeing the one built.

And if you need a set of logging tongs you can build them too. :)
Wow-wee! that could frame a very interesting shed !
I can come for the 4th but can't commit the time or $ for the garage.
10(?)
I could do some more aerial-perspective pix and vids if everyone promises not to shoot my little Birdy out of the sky
I will be there on the 4th, hopefully the wife will come with me. I am going to try like hell to make it for the 2nd and 3rd for the curved wood project. If so I will be solo those two days.
I'm coming. If anybody needs anything from Logrite I can stop there again and bring it up to save the shipping
I have a wedding to go to....
May the 4th be with you all!
Looks like it interferes with my annual ATV trip to my ADK camp with 5 or 6 pals.
Phooey!
I thoroughly enjoyed the gathering at Peter's last year.
Hopefully we can get more people interested in curved-woods idea and offer of building a small building. Anyone that hasn't seen his work should check it out I believe he has a website. It's quite an offer from an incredibly talented craftsman.
I will cover the costs of any fasteners that are needed.
Bruno and I have set the dimension of the garage Now I am working on the plans. The challenge is to do it in 3 days so I have to think about the construction details with that time frame. I expect the first day to be conventional stick wall framing for the one who wants to learn the basic. The 2 other days on the curved roof .
As for $$$, I could not accept any kind of money because I am a Canadian going in the US. Not even the room and board (I will have my camping gear and food ). I am very confortable with that and I will respect the law. My pay will be to share my passion, help other to built differently, and I think that is legal ! So if people want to give money for the workshop, it will go for the building materials. It will be a workshop, so it will have a lot of content on how to, with more practice than theory.
Later, I will supply in this post more info so people will see what it is all about

Bruno let us know what we can bring from food to lumber .Ido not understand all this talk of grits ,
We have always given grits to the chickens so they can grind up their food in their gizzard.
Thank you

I'm really thinking about coming to the event, for lunch at least!
I have some friends in VT to visit and some business to attend to too.
If I can get it all lined up I'll let you know.

Motels in the area?
Is there a set agenda?
There is a Motel in New London NH
That folks stayed at the September sawing benefit for me.
We stayed at the Lamplighter motel in New London last fall when we went to Bruno's. Not expensive, we liked it, would stay there again.
Thanks
The itinerary is
May 2nd-4th the curved wood build
8'x12' curved building
If enough folks come there might be some odds and end sawing I need help with for the building on the 2nd and 3rd
The 4th 8:00 start meet and great
9:00 saw up some slabs and I will show how I make it FB market place ready.
1:00 lunch
The curved wood build will also be going on.
I'm working on a demo or 2 off some equipment.
I'll be there on the 4th!!!
I have some tapped hard maple logs I'd like to send up to Bruno. Anyone have ideas? I'm hoping Rita an I can come on the 4th depends on meds an how I feel.
Day 1
Built the floor on floating blocks. Raise the wall using stick framing technique. Giving theory about stick framing using the book : Canadian Wood-frame House Construction publish by the Canadian Gov and free on line.
Day 2
Build a curved roof ridge with pine board. Technique how to get smooth curves. Put up the roof structure including the bracings.

Day 3
Put the board on the roof. Techniques how to trace and cut the edges curved. Put the asphalt shingles and how to put it because of the rain running in 2 directions.
Depending on the weather and the number of participants, we will try to put the bulging siding, a very simple technique. Here is an exemple of curved edges

Ok folks I'm in a pickle
I went out and sawed today.
It didn't go so good very slow.
So here is the pickle part
I want the curved wood build to happen.
At this rate I will never get the list sawn out.
I have most of the logs.
Is there someone near me that I could pay to bring their mill in to help saw the list with me.
I'm going to go to Pete's to buy (4) 6×6×12 hemlock for the base as I don't have hemlock logs that long.
I'm not looking for a free-b
Bruno
The sawing would be pine boards
Hemlock,spruce and fir 2x4x8 and some 2x4x12
The 12' stuff I will cut the logs off my lot
I could probably help. However:
My driveway is in the midst of mud season. We could sneak it out some morning after a freezing night. Sposta do that next week.
My truck is dead, someone else would have to haul it.
I could walk the saw head back and forth but I will need help off bearing as I am a physical wreck.
I still have some blades Peter gave me after the fall shindig, I could cut for a very favorable rate.
I live about 15 miles away.
I would like to help and it would give me an excuse to witness Claude' s magic
Beav
I can come get your mill
And get a helper and get you more bands
Awesome!! Didn't all those little details melt away! I wrote down my phone # on the guest list you had last fall. Gonna be fun...
Let me know what day you're planning on doing it and I'll see if I can come up and help as well.

Oliver and Harriett make two more; now what can we do to help Jackie? Or what can we bring to make our contribution? Non-perishable? Or we could go shopping Thursday or Friday evening.
Looking forward to seeing everyone.

If you come to the glaciaed northern project I will let you take home some spalted hard maple slabs and it might have tap holes in it.
We need to open it up.

I can see if @thecfarm (http://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=436) will send me that box of grits he has and I will cook them for them.

Does anyone coming to the project have any easyup type shelter
I had one left over the woodspliter last fall and got a freak 6 inch heavy wet storm and it folded up.
Just trying to plan

Yes that it Jim

I'm traveling to Nashua on Friday if it isn't raining that day.

We are and making a New England vacation out of it.
The wife and I will be there on the 4th. Not sure about the 2nd and 3rd.
Jim:
Can you once again post the direction(s) to your place starting at the I-89 exits?
GAB
I-89 exit 13 Grantham nh
Heading south right at the bottom of the ramp on to rt10 , go through the village, next left on to rt114, go past the Grantham dump 4th drive on the left.
Heading north left at the bottom of the ramp, then same as above
We plan to start that way on May 1st. We are attending the Georgia Baptist Senior Adult Retreat (https://www.facebook.com/GeorgiaBaptistToccoa) at Taccoa, GA the first part of the week. Hope to tour The Baseball Hall of Fame on the way up, Friday morning. This will be the second trip to New York State in this pickup.
Safe travels see you when you get to NH
I have some folks coming in for the 4th
Riehl Steel is bring on my new edger and giving a demo.
I also have Woody's equipment coming in from Canada with some equipment to show
It looks to be a good time
Looks like I will be able to make it again this year. Going to leave from work, should make it a little more than 6 hour drive. So, I should be there by 6:00.
I am very sorry I can't make it but work takes me in another direction.
Jon
Hi Folks
Remember anyone can attend .
I'm hoping for a good turn out.
My address is 4276 main st Springfield nh
We will arrive Saturday morning, so I'll miss out on working on the curved building. I look forward to seeing the finished product everyone attending.
Milling pine boards for the project and cleaning up the yard so I don't look like a Goggin
Got a porta Jon coming in on Monday
Did anyone find lodging near Bruno's. It seems the Lamplighter in New London is closed. I am not sure we could make it but lodging is some factor.
I'm at the Newport Motel about 20 minutes away but I don't know if they have anything left. Sunapee Lake Lodge is about the same distance but I couldn't get a price I would pay
I called the Lamplighter
They answered and said they are open

Curved wood, your fabrications are terrific ! :o 8) :o 8) :o 8)
51 Cub, did you get in the Newport Motel? We have reservations there (I hope) for Wed through Saturday. We're looking forward to meeting all of you Forum members.
We had tried the Lamplighter where we stayed for the last gathering, but I could not find a working phone number, and someone had commented they were closed. They probably hadn't opened yet for the season. It was a good place to stay and there's places to eat not too far away.
We will be staying Friday night in White River Junction, Vt. at the Super 8. The map app says it is a 21 miles from Bruno's place.
I am planning on camping. Am I the only one? Kids cost to much to afford the luxurious hotels :)
Yes some are camping out back.
The Curved wood project is going to be put on hold for now.
Claudes community is going through heavy flooding and he is a helper in the help and recovery efforts.
Anyone is welcome to come early if you want.
Saturday the 4th is still on with demos and lunch
Bruno
My plan is to work roughly 3.5 hours on friday then head out from there. If my estimates are correct I should be there by 5:00 pm. Google says almost 6 hours to get there. Saves me an hour if I leave from home.
If folks still want to come on Thursday and Friday I have an 8x12 timber frame shed project we can work on.
It will be fun
Just let me know we also could build the floor and frame the walls for the Curved-wood project to be finished at a latter date when Claude can make it.
Lots of possibilities.
I first want to thank Claude for doing all he can to help others deal with all the flooding. At such times, family, friends and neighbors come first. Our prayers go out for all who are affected by this calamity

My wife and I are still planning to be at Bruno's on Wednesday afternoon, rain or shine. Thursday and Friday's plans have changed and the curved-wood project may be on hold, but there are other projects we can work on and as Bruno said, maybe some timber frame lessons. Certainly there will be camaraderie and a chance to meet and work with other forum members.
Saturday's get-together is sure to be a time of fun and learning, and you won't go away hungry from Jackie's lunch. The weather is promising to be cool and damp, so bring warm clothing and a rain coat and be prepared to have a good time. Bruno and Sheila have been planning this event for quite a while, and we'll try to make it a memorable time for all.

I am sorry to report the workshop on curved building. My community is in heavy flooding. Water peak is plan for another 2-3 days. All the region is touch. Many cities are in an emergency status. The army is involved. A city not too far had a dike that open up; the emergency team evacuate 5000 persons in 30 minutes !!! No fatality. So I am helping around since my own place is not touch.
I will try to set a new date early this summer. Keep in touch and sorry for the inconvenient. Claude(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/48698/inondation_traversier_2019_~3.jpg?easyrotate_cache=1556545904)<
At the end of the road is a ferry to cross the Outaouais River ! By the phone post you could imagine the distance.
I'm trying one more time to see if any one could haul a few maple logs up to Bruno's outing on Sat. Oliver offered but but now can't because of other commitments. We live 5 Mins off of I-91 if anyone could swing by we'd appreciate it. I just can't afford to pay trucking for my trucker to deliver them.
Curved Wood it's good you can help with the bad flooding there. I'll pray that you'll stay safe and the suffering it'll cause to family's there.
ed_k you have anymore details on the logs? I am thinking when you mention trucker they are probably not going to fit in the bed of my F-150 (short bed)

oh, thought they were going for the get together. Figured 91 adds 15 minutes to my trip so I could possible deliver them to the gathering. But would definitely need a trailer for that load.
I have a project to do if anyone wants to still come on Thursday And Friday

Appreciate life when you could...I could tell you that for some others life is no fun and for a while (second major flood in the last 3 years, flood over 100 years probability ). I wish I could go with you guys on the Bruno's project. Good gathering. Put some pictures. Claude

Take lots of pics so we know it happened. All the best, Rob.
We're about half way there. See y'all Saturday
Well I am heading out by hopefully 10:00 tomorrow morning. Who all is camping at Bruno's? I will be.
I figure 7 hours on the road.
Bruno thanks for putting this on, and I wish I could be there to meet you and all others. I am working 7 out of 8 days and nights due to issues.
If anyone coming could bring some ice for drinks and maybe bring some drinks that would be great.
I will have a log on the mill ready to go
I'll bring some bottled water, and Harriett is sending a dozen muffins she made for coffee break...............and a package of cookies. Nobody is going to starve!!
We're bringing drinks this morning (Saturday)
Have a great time guys and gals.

Thanks. Not a clue. I had one about 8 or 9 years ago at the VA. At that time they had me on the tread mill twice and had dye running thru my heart. Then they gave me a donut n a half pint of milk to help push the stuff thru my system. Wanted to get it thru my kidneys they said. I thought some home brew would do that!

I had a good time. I like the idea of a cookout / campout and firetalk. ended up just being GAB and myself camped. I stayed till sunday GAB left saturday. was kinda lonely but still enjoyed myself.
On my way home I stopped at Queechee gorge. Thanks bruno for refreshing my memory on the name. Probably did about a 6 mile hike. Then went to visit Pet from bearswamp. Was a great trip. unfortunately it looks like all the pics I took at queechee gorge did not actually save to my card :(
Finally made it home at 9:15 Sunday night. Just in time for the kids to already be asleep :(. oh well. he was really happy to see me this morning. Now sitting here at the surgery center waiting for them to finish slicing and dicing my wife. (simple tendon stuff).
Maybe I need to head up there again when the new mill shows up so I can go retake the pictures from Quechee gorge.
Sounds good anytime folks are welcome

It was good to attend and meet folks from the forum. Since driving through the rural New England States for the first time, I have a new perspective of that part of the country. It was some of most beautiful hills and mountains and woods that God created and the nicest people. Driving from Cooperstown to Springfield and through Maine on two lane country roads I was impressed how much saw milling and firewood processing is done on rural farms. Note to self: stay away from I 95 LOL
Also, when driving along and you see a sawdust pile you know there is a mill there. Otherwise, it is firewood processing.
That is why most of us live up here. Beautiful country but crappy taxes and government.
I try to stay away from any road with 95 on it. ;D
