Just took a little video of my buddy John draw knifing pegs in my shop.  These white Oak pegs are riven (by Ron Mansour in OH) into octagons.  Last year we draw knifed about 600 for draw boring for a timberframe.  This time we are doing 500 and just putting a lead in on the tip. The next frame will not be draw bored, but some compression of the octagonal peg will occur as the in line holes will be slightly smaller than the corners of the Octagon.  They are riven from a green butt log.  We then put them in totes of water (I add a few drops of bleach) to stay wet so they are easy to draw knife.  Then we let them dry.

If I say it\\\\\\\'s going to take so long, multiply that by at least 3!

Brad,

Very nice.  Is there a niche market in pegs?

I guess, for timber framers only.  I know of only two making pegs - Ron as I mentioned (http://squarepegtimberjoinery.com/  , he's a FF member too), and Northcott turning (www.pegs.us).  Ron rives pegs on the side for others as well as timberframes.  Northcott sells machine turned pegs.  Price is pretty close for comparable size/length, maybe slightly more for riven.
