red oak for barn sills?
« on: April 11, 2018, 02:15:14 PM »
spring greetings from the rolling hills of northeast missouri ~

we ordered a bunch of 8x8 white oak (they'd be bottom sill timbers for a timber framed barn) from a local mill and what they actually milled up is half white and half red oak timbers. i couldn't tell you why they did that :)

question is: do i reject the red oak for bottom sills or could they be an serviceable choice?

i want them to work because we're ready for them and the quality is fine, but i'm concerned that the red oak would be a bad choice for rot reasons. foundation is concrete piers, all tops 1' above grade. there will be deep livestock litter in the barn at times. the rest of the frame will be doug fir.

any insight from this knowledgeable group would be most appreciated! ~ thermos

x3
Anything someone can design, I can sure figure out how to fix!
If I say it\\\\\\\'s going to take so long, multiply that by at least 3!

I would shift the design more towards an earthen floor rather than have a suspended wood floor, with a heavy manure load, just above the ground level.  Could be a cost saver and would mitigate the risk of nutrient accelerated decay in the floor system.
