New TJ 230

Hi folks, I just picked up another 230. It has a 3-53, Hercules/Eaton winch and I presume they are the Rockwell planetaries (12 studs around face plate). It is missing the factory ID plate, but I found the serial number stamped as 5609-7845??  The last 2 digits are not clear. 

Where would I find the specific model number? Any guesses on the year?

Between 1968 and 1980 would be my guess😁 Seriously, that's a nice straight looking machine!

Nice machine, and I like the grapple on the blade. Bet it will come in really handy.

Thanks guys. Aside from the paint, this seems to be a gem. It doesn't appear the skidder was ever used very hard. All the pins/bushings are tight, no major leaks to be worried about and the jimmy purrrrs...I've owned several old Jack's over the years but I think this is one of the better ones.

I would be quite a happy man with a skidder like that, specially with the clamp in front. I almost bought the same  model a few weeks ago but the seller didn't have registration and the skidder didn't have any plate with the serial number on. I was just afraid that the machine could have been stolen. Everything was working properly and the price was ok : $9500 can (about $6750 US) .  Still waiting for another deal. Hope that you have some fun with yours.

Thanks Curved Wood. If the machine you were looking at is still available, have a real close look on the plate below the seat, almost directly under the small emergency brake lever, where your right ankle would be. The serial number was often stamped into the steel, directly behind where the ID plate was riveted on. You may need to scratch some old paint away, but I bet it's there. You should see the old rivets or holes as a guide.

As far as I know there never was any type of registration for these machines, so the only was to confirm it's not stolen is for the police to search the serial number.

Very straight with good rubber. Nice 230. Rockwells, Herc winch and a grapple to boot. Tires are 1500$ on rims in good condition in these parts. Very righteous Jack.

Sure is good looking iron. Hard to beat them old 230's . I have 2 . one is in pieces at the moment on this forum under 3-53 blower damage . Have fun with yours !!

Really nice old TJ!!  Congrats. My guess is early 70s with the Rockwell running gear combined with the more enclosed cab. Very straight and obviously well cared for. A rarity for sure!

Thanks for the info about the serial number stamped on the frame. Well the way to go here is to call the cops. They will take the info , check if it was stolen and emit a legal certificate. The problem is the seller didn't want to call the cop saying too much of problem. Hum...
