I put on a handy cap deer hunt every year during Ohio gun season here at home. But I try to take a hunter a year to a high fence operation so they can have a chance at a nice buck. The Northwest Ohio S.C.I. takes care of all the cost so its a fun trip for myself and the hunter. This year we went to a place in Holmes cty, it is four hundred acres. For me I wouldn't enjoy hunting in fence but feel it is a personal choice for each hunter. But for my fellows it is a thrill for them, we ended up killing a 13 point buck. Iam not into the scoring but they told me it would score between 140 and 150 a real dandy buck. I also saw a 42 point buck and one with two 12 incn drop tines that looked like a ball bats it sure was a pretty buck. Beautiful country with plenty of sawmills and loggers [ just up my alley ;D ] One sawmill had a junk pile of old equipment, get me around stuff like that at it's Christmas eve :D Over all a great time Bill.
surly you took pictures of these bucks
Yep I did I will try to get them posted in the next couple of days with some help ;D
ohio always has produced monster bucks :)
Holmes County, been there many years ago. Looked just like Maine where we was. A few houses, than a small farm, the lay out of the land, even the trees.

Thought I'd share my latest success in bow hunting. Second year in a row that I was able to get a buck. 8 pointer last year and now this year a 10 pointer. Had to pinch myself to make sure I wasn't dreaming ;D
Very nice Lorax! smiley_hollywood_cool
Congrats Lorax. Nice "catch". :)
Nice buck ;) !
Very Nice!
sweet
Nice bag and tag! ;D :)
Nice buck! I like that you shot it with a bow ;)
Do you eat the heart? Some good eatin there. ;D

I normally eat the heart but this year my next door neighbor, who is a disabled Vietnam Vet, asked me to save the heart for him if I was able to bag a deer. So he was able to enjoy it and I hope to get another deer during the gun season in a little over a week.

I didn't have it weighed but I would guess that he was around 160 lbs.

That's a good reason ;)
Good job on the hunt Lorax. Especially nice of you to share like that. :)
My bow kill. 8 point buck taken at 2:15 pm, 11/10/11.

Nice job Ron ;D ;D
Got the bear out of your stand, Eh?
Good for you Ron. Nice buck. Hope your weather was as good as ours. Some snow on the ground and right at 30 deg.
My son has been hunting here this week (every day, except the snow storm on Wed). This morning he stuck an 8 pt buck and then both of us filled our doe tags this pm. Been a good day, with beautiful weather.
all iv'e seen this fall is 1 deer, ya just 1 deer. plenty of wolves and bear.
hunting the same area as the last 25 yrs always have seen over 75 deer. 6 yrs ago when the first wolves showed up it has been a steady decline in numbers for deer.
its real common to hear wolves howling almost every night, at first it was neat to hear but, after seeing what kind of damage they do not only to wildlife but when they started attacking and killing our beef cattle the neatness qiuckly turned to frustration.the way our law reads you can only shoot a wolf if its in the process of killing a beef animal and the partially eaten animal must be saved for evidence.
here the problem with that it happens at night and they quickly eat the animal. sorry for getting this thread off track :)

Good job guys.
My deer season didn't last long. This morning was opening morning of the regular firearm season. Got out of the house about 7:20 and walked up between the log piles. A big doe came walking out the woods. This is where she stood. This is where she fell. Season over at 7:23.
All nice deer, guys, and good eating, too!
NOW it's a food topic! :)
I don't hunt deer, but I saw a big doe with two smaller yearlings on Thursday morning. Same bunch I seen about twice or three times. Rarely see a buck around. Of course these three are rare to. :D :D
Rumor has it that Beenthere and Son have been piling the deer up this past week.
So much that he donated a deer to the handicapped......me :D :D :D :D
Thanks Kent ;D
There will be bacon!
Congrats Ron on your buck!
Bibby, you don't like to run your deer too hard eh? :D :D

I'm getting to old to get out there and chase them down. I have to wait for them to come to me. (all of 3 minutes) I'm too lazy to track them so I just shoot them dead on the spot. This is the first one I had to take back into the woods to field dress!
I use a Marlin 1895 in 45/70 with heavy load. I think I have about 10 more rounds loaded for the 45/70. That should last me another 10 years.
"Use enough gun." Elmer Keith.
You ain't old, but I know the lumber business is probably hard on the bones as you age. ;D My grandfather shot his last deer when he was 76. We drug that deer across two beaver ponds. He wasn't a roadside windshield hunter. ;)
Another story to tell Bibbyman. Should of had the camers set up and show how people hunt MO. Could of had the dog in the back ground too. That's funny.
Nice deer guys!
I had a few deer running around the back 80 yesterday. I looked back and commented to Patty that a couple of bucks were sparing down there. I got the binocs out to see what size they were and quietly put them down just a bit embarrassed....it wasn't two bucks. :D

Well, it's really hard to call what I do hunting. The last three seasons I've not left the loglot. The previous two years I shot a doe from the sawshed. I just lean the Marlin in the corner and keep an eye out. The last three have been killed within 20' of the same spot.
I've got two more tags – including a buck tag. They've changed the rules in Missouri to protect the young bucks. Must have at least 8 points so long or something. But this one is enough. If the wind every dies down I may go out and take a nap on the hillside.
I went over to the tree farm yesterday and sat and watched. I saw 5 rack bucks. Our regular gun season opens Saturday. A couple of weeks ago, we saw 12 racks one evening.
Saturday was opening day here. I saw a huge buck around 6:45 right in front of my stand. Unfortunately it was just dark enough I could see him through my binoculars but not get a good bead on him. At 7:45am a doe peeked out from behind a brush pile. Shot the branch in front of her and she wandered away ::)
Sunday was far to windy to even attempt it.
This morning I had two nice doe by 8am. I hope to get two more but I think I will wait until these are in the freezer. This warm weather is not helping my cause.
I think next week is our last week for deer here. They can hunt partridge into December though. I was out trail hiking yesterday and saw a couple birds and where two were harvested as well. The roads traverse a huge clearcut on mill ground. All the birds I see are near water holes or seeps. Partridge don't venture too far from water it seems. Mighty fine eating birds to. :)
Best year ever here at the cabin. Pete got a 4 point yesterday, Lynda shot a 5 point tonight, I skinned them and quartered them and we ate Asparagus, fried taters and BACKSTRAP FOR SUPPER!
So far we have saw a total of 3 deer. All bucks. The buck I saw tonight was not legal. I'm on my own now. Pete and Lynda can no longer hunt. We never saw either of these bucks during the summer or bear season. We did see a big deer in the feild tonight after shooting hours that also acted like a buck, but to dark to know for sure.

Nice size deer.
And the meal sounds great. It is what I had for dinner tonight too.
In WI, we have the "group" hunt, so Pete and Lynda could still hunt for your tag, if within earshot I think.
For this coming opening on Sat., WI hunters can now transport weapons unloaded but not cased. Quite different from before, and always had to be sure to have a case along for gun or bow.
Lynda put this together from clips we took when Pete got his deer yesterday.

This reminds me of a hunt I had a few years ago on Stewart Island which is at the bottom of New Zealand . I was suppose to go surfcasting with my good wife one morning and was waiting for her to get ready , we were only going fishing but it was taking as long as it would to get ready for town so I grabbed the rifle and walked 20 metres from the hut and shot a whitetail buck and was back at the hut in 2 minutes with my prize . Still had to wait 15 more for my wife. :-X ::) ??? ;D
Way to go Pete and Lynda! Nice big deer, should fill the freezer pretty full.
I always like a good deer story. ;D Did you hear the shot and went out to see if he got a deer?
My step son went on a moose hunt with his Grand Father,76 years old,his father and his son,4 generation hunt. His uncle, and my DIL and her 2 kids went too. His Father filmed the whole thing. Right from scouting to shooting the moose to loading it. I only really saw the shooting of it,was alot going on with the excitment of the Grand Father, beacuse he was the one that shot it. He nver shot a moose before. Shot elk and other good size animals. He carries the viedo in his pocket to show people. ;D
We carry radios so we are always in easy contact with one another. We found out how important that can be the year the step on my elevated blind broke.
Good for you all 8)
We butchered the two doe I got Monday, yesterday. I went back out today but the wind came up just after sun up so I gave it up. Got things to do.
I will go out again tomorrow morning. The antlerless rules in Monroe Co. are really helping me cull the herd and I want to take full advantage. Plus the doe are easier to clean and are more tender ;D
Here I thought the wind was howling only in Ohio, can't beg a breeze in the summer but let winter come and the draft on my wood furnace will suck the hat off your head when you open the door ;D. Ive been hauling logs all week I make sure I have my back to the wind while loading. I wonder if theres any place in north america where its not windy in the winter ?
A few years ago I was talking to a local fella that is a logger. He cut a lot about 5 miles from home here and the field they yarded to was up on a ridge. He operated the loader truck and said it was the coldest spot on the earth that winter. The wind coming across that big field never stopped. With Mars Hill in the background, he could've been on the moon. Not much difference, besides the wind, still cold. :D
Here in Pa rifle deer season starts the Monday after Thanksgiving so this morning I took three of my rifles out for a bit of shooting. I tried my 6MM Remington, 7mm08, and my old faithfull 30-06. All are shooting fine so I tried to remember whose turn it is, I think the little 7mm08 gets first day. Decisions, decisions.
Gary
Rifle season closed this weekend, but there is still grouse season. Deer harvest is way down at the polling stations around here.
Our Grandson, Ben got an 8 point Saturday evening. For some reason, my camera did not store the pictures so the only thing that I have is him with the sawed off antlers. :-\

Nice deer, Jeff and Lynn!
We managed to get in the woods Saturday afternoon. Saw 3 turkeys, but that's all. I go back up to the mountains on Saturday morning.
Here, there are some dumb hunting regulations.
1. When you get your buck, you're done, can't carry a gun anymore.
BUT, we do have a bear season, so that does give you the right to carry the gun, it's illegal to shoot a deer to fill your partners tag.
2. Kids can't go hunting with you!
They can't even be in the woods, unless they're old enough to, and have a hunting license.
Makes one wonder how these kids are suppose to learn how to hunt.
They can't learn it all during the 10-hour hunters safety course.
I agree Chuck. Sometimes when politicians get involved with game laws, everyone looses. :-\
My daughters first deer. She's been hunting with a bow for 7 years. This will be her first year hunting with a gun. She gutted, skinned & butchered the deer. With a little help Of course. Jim
PS, My first attempt to post a picture.

Even with a little help, congratulations to your Daughter. smiley_thumbsup
4700 deer reported this year in the harvest, down about 300. Not really much different that the last 3 years. Surprising, but most of the deer is in the south. I never saw any on the back of all the pick-ups tramping up and down this road. :D
Today was Ohio's opener, I thought last year and the year before was terrible today would of gotten the award. It was blowing out of the north/northeast with a cold rain. I ended up with two handy-cap hunters I got them to there areas and daylite broke going on into late morning we saw a doe and two fawns with her. I have fiberglass igloo blinds and by three even with the buddy heaters they were about froze and called it a day. One of the boys asked me what I thought and I said you can't kill a deer from the car but he still decided to call it a day. And to be honest I was also I don't believe I can ever remember a more miserable day then today.
Autocar
My boy sits in his car behind my pole barn to get his deer. Legal too. They come out of the woods just before closing time.
marv
As far as hunting, a loaded gun in a vehicle is a violation up here. I'm not sure how it works with a handicap permit.
Our deer herds are way down, from over 100,000 in the 80's to 30,000 give or take now.
As far as moose, we shoot half that 4700 number of deer in 3 days. The deer hunt is 4 weeks. If you go to the moose areas it's no harder to shoot one than a horse.
There's more tracks around my sawmill and house than up in the woods. Took out the puppy, still kinda dark, and 2 deer were on the edge of the woods only a couple hundred feet from the house.Told my step son he needs to move his tree stand.

In the past I've noticed deer hanging around piles of fresh sawdust...maybe they like the sweet smell/taste? Might just be a coincidence :D
This morning the weather was the same as yesturday. Only difference the river was flooded over our hunting area so we ended up coming home today. There calling for snow by dark I sure don't get into winter anymore ::)
Well, I think I'm gaining on getting pics up again so I'll try and put one on of the deer I got this year during rifle season.

OK, still have to work on the rotate thing I guess. :D
Your aspect ratio is a little wide to. ;)
Nice buck. ;D
What some guys won't do to make their deer look bigger. :D
The guys taking fish pictures call it "long arming."
Not too sure what went on there, Furby walked me through rotating the pic last night but I couldn't make it stay that way in my gallery, I see now it is, don't know what happened to it in my post, last night it was just off 90*. Oh well, maybe it grow taller too, then I'll have to take him in to get scored :D.
Nice buck sandhills. It's helpful to have "behind the scenes" friends. :)
Some of them sneak up on you with them private messages. :D
Patty and I just got back in from butchering a doe. Our season started yesterday but no way was I hunting in a pouring rain. About 11AM I looked out and there were a group of them just off our back patio. I had the gun laying on the couch for just such an occasion. ;D
Hey nobody said it had to be sporting. :D
Sounds like my kind of hunting.
Your getting as sporting as Bibby shooting out from behind the saw shed. :D :D
My B-I-L got his moose this fall without even having to get out of bed. :D They went in and set up camp the day before season opened up. They use a wall tent. One of the guys happened to look out the tent flap opening morning to see a nice young bull walking through camp. :D Another of the guys handed Kevin his rifle and held up the flap while the other guy held the other flap. The rest is history. :D :D He said the hardest part of the whole hunt for him was having to stay in camp and be the camp cook and bartender every evening after the hunting was done for the day. ;D
When the moose gods offer you a moose...you take the moose! Can I get an Amen!
I got my deer at daybreak opening morning. It does mess with the idea of "hunting" to get one in the first hour of scheduled week long hunt.
::)
Kderby
Amen
That is why you take your fishing gear with ya so you have somethin' to do when the huntin' is over ;)
I was digging around the other day looking for a title for a pickup and found this picture of my "trophy buck" from a few years ago, just thought I'd make you all jealous
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/22514/everyday_pictures.jpg)
The knot heads I butcher with thought it would be funny and screwed the antlers on before I got there, I got a kick out of it so I had to grab the trusty air rifle for a photo op., the pig was good eatin too. ;)
Better eating than any deer I've ever eaten. :D
Pat and I had seen this buck numerous times before the season opened and almost every time we have hunted since. We hoped one of the Grandchildren could get him, but as the rut nears, things change quickly and "saving" deer becomes an iffy situation. I wanted him out of the herd and breeding population.
Anyway it was time for him to go. He was 3 1/2 years old and a fork horn with brow tines, and was 16" inside. That's what he was, and that's all that he was ever going to be.
Her rifle is a re-stocked Ruger M77, re-barreled by E.R.Shaw from a .243 to 7mm08.
Nice!
Yes, nice score for the Mrs. 8)
Around here we've had a late December rise near flood stage on the Mississippi river, which means most bottoms near the river are flooded and running the deer out on our protected side of the levee. I watched nine does last evening come out of the thicket into some soybeans and corn I had left for quail; a doe and her two yearlings ran to the plots to nibble before the others got there. They love them some beans!
The bucks are coming out of rut now and laying back until complete darkness before showing except their tracks give them away. There was a boone & crockett killed here by someone back in September, these boys are bad to poach those big ones.
I passed on three different nice 8 pointers Monday morning. They looked to be 2 1/2 year old bucks and had the potential to be really nice in a year or two. I shot this 3 1/2 year old 8 point Wednesday morning. He was actually smaller that any of the Monday's bucks, but this one needed to go. He had good mass but was only 12" inside.
Nice buck, but Mrs. scored a bit better'n you this year. ::) ;D ;D
Yup, I ain't no dummy. :D
His antlers are pretty heavy looking. ;D He's quite dark faced to. Nice score. Make some nice minced meat pie for Christmas. ;)
Nice buck how many can you take in one season ?
We get 3 bucks and 5 does per season. I had been limiting our family hunters to one buck, but this year we will allow two.
It is not unusual for us to see at least one "rack" buck each hunting day. I have seen 6 at one time in a food plot. I saw 3 nice 8 pointers Monday morning, and did not shoot.
That's a good looking buck, MagicMan. The funny thing is, that wouldn't be a legal buck in the county where I hunt in Texas. They have to have a 13-inch inside spread or one unforked antler. I understand that the idea is to harvest only mature bucks, but it gives us trouble in our area. Our bucks tend to grow tall rather than wide antlers. And I'd like to see the bucks with smaller antlers thinned out. But the wildlife biologists probably know a lot more than I do.
Yup, it is hard to have laws/rules for harvesting bucks that will eliminate the proper bucks. Here our "outside" spread is used and/or the main beam length. Either of these made this buck legal.
Sometimes we just have to "do what we have to do" to eliminate inferior breeding bucks.
One of them. :-\
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/20011/2410/DSCN0592.JPG)
I got both of them.
When I hunted in South Africa in 2003 (over there on business), I wanted a wildebeest rug, but not a mount. They're ugly critters, but there was a rug in my room that was gorgeous. The outfitter offered me a particular wildebeest bull at a discount. He had stunted horns, but he was a good fighter, and was breeding prolifically. We hunted an entire day for that particular bull, but could never get a shot at him. I finally took an old cow, long past her prime.
Unfortunately, we were there in the summer, and her coat wasn't great, so my rug isn't gorgeous. But that's okay. We can't keep it on the floor anyway because the dogs want to chew on it. :D
Sounds like you needed that old bull's rug. It could have protected itself. ;D
Nice buck Magicman, I wish we had a chance to manage deer around here like that but with so much farm ground and decreasing cover it basically comes down to, if you don't take it someone will, a lot of hunting pressure. I do know where a few really nice ones are on our land, but once rut starts they can travel miles following the does. My wife missed a shot at one this year that literally made the one I got look like a baby, I hope he's still around but it was opening weekend so I have my doubts. :-\
Around this area in Maine,if you wait, you may not get nothing. Not a lot of choices around here. I wish there was,but just the way it is. You may see a not so good one,and that will be it for the season.
I've only seen one deer in a month, and she was down in the apple trees 2 weeks ago.
I'm not saying you won't see more deer. I did not mean it that way,you just may may not see one better than the one you let go by thinking there will be a bigger-better one. I have not seen many deer yet this year. I'm out in the woods just about daily on my tractor, the deer do not fear my tractor,I don't bother them. We have not see hardly any even when we come home after dark this year. Use to see 3-6 out in the field when we come home and a few would cross in front of us going up the driveway too.
No need to explain, my comment was not related to your last post. Just how it is. That's why we have all them moose. ;D
For the last few years we've had a very high deer population around here, I can remember years ago when six of us hunted together and we hunted, walked miles of treelines everyday the whole week and never saw a deer. Now you see them everywhere but their cover is all getting tore up to farm and mix that with all the hunters and about every good spot has someone hunting it. My brother in law and nephew hunt most of our ground and it's nothing to see 12 to 18 deer in a sitting but start getting picky and they cross the road and someone else gets them.
In the 3 day moose hunt, they shot half as many moose compared to the number of deer shot in a 4 week deer hunt. When you cut down all the wintering grounds the deer freeze and starve to death in the north.
I had a nice 8 point in front of me this morning, but he looked to be only a 2½ year old buck with potential.
I shot a doe instead.
Bill Gaiche, Ya notice that I am wearing my "lucky hat". :)
This morning was a good morning. At 9:15 I caught this big guy traveling through. He was 4½ years old, and a heavy antlered 8 point with 11" and 12" G2's, with a 17" inside spread. :)

Looks like a wall hanger for the new cabin addition, nice deer.

That's a beauty ! I wish our season up here in NY was a little longer, especially since it's too mild for ice fishing :-\ Looks like you will be enjoying some nice venison this winter.
For curiosity sake, I had him scored. 142 1/8.
Congrats...nice looking buck!
Way to go MM 8) 8)
Very nice and looks like a heavy rack to!! :)
MM, with all that deer meat this fall/winter I was wondering if you make minced meat from any of it for pies. :)
Thanks guys, that is one of my better bucks.
SD, I have never eaten minced meat and would have no idea how to make it. I guess that I should Google it. :P
The store bought stuff has no meat, just minced/ground fruit. But the home made around here added deer meat or moose meat.
Very Nice! A great score to.
