Found this after milling a walnut that had been dead standing for a few years. The neighbor who gave me the tree said he thought it had been dead for about 5 years or so.  

 
It came out of these slabs 

 
Even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in awhile

looks like a pine borer larvae to me but I'm no expert.
If it was easy, everyone would be doing it!

Looks a lot like osage orange rather than walnut.

Thanks guys, long horn beetle larvae is what I came up with from Google searching. It's definitely walnut and I'm pretty sure it was all the metal in this log that smoked my 3 blades not the larvae.

Well that makes sense, walnut is required to have metal in it, just the laws of nature.

Yep, a type of round headed borer. In cut or dead spruce we get sawyer beetle. You can sit on a fresh cut spruce log pile and watch the adults hone in. :D
