a coworker is a collector and overhauler of old saw. we got to talking about chainsaw milling and if a 661 would pull a 60" bar through 48-50" of tree.

any ways, he offers to sell me his 088 with a 5' bar and chain for what i think is a reasonable price of $1400. what is yaws opinion on price?

Money isn't in the budget rite now with my band mill build budget. I told him once we are off contract and my big price/pieces of the mill were bought, I would buy it if he still had it, with the first option of buy back if i decided i didn't want/need it anymore.

That 088 could be 22 years old. Factory production run of the 088 ran from Aug 1996 to Aug 2003 for 7 years.
Check the date clocks under the rear handle and top cover like my pic shows. That will give you a year and month the parts were made and give a rough year it was assembled which is that year or the next. May have sat at the dealer for a few years.
1996 letter is W,  2003 is D.
So 97 is X 98 Y 99 Z 2000 A , etc.
