A Visit to Nobility

The wife, kid and I are going to head south during
spring break and we are going to stay at a Bed and
Breakfast near Noble's. The way Noble and I have it
figured, we're gonna have Becky do the milking while
we go fly fishing. ;D
Noble said something about doing some singing
while we were there and I was wondering if I should
take along my hearing protection? ;)

Whitepe and his family made it here on schedule and we have sure been enjoying their visit. I hope they have been having a good time as well. They are sure nice people and seem to have a good time at whatever they are doing. We havn't had time to do everything we would have liked to do but Perry does have several pictures that I think you will like.

I appreciate his helping me get started on a new computer. Maybe someday I'll be able to post my own pictures. If I do, I'll sure get one of Ozark county's traffick light. I took the Whites to Gainsville to see it but they must have been so much in awe that they forgot to take a picture of it.

Well Perry and his family are headed back north. I sure enjoyed their visit and appreciated Becky's help milking while Perry and I goofed off. Today we crashed a head-start easter egg hunt-------man it's been a long time since I've been yelled at like that by a school marm other than my wife. We climbed a fence and got away before she got to us. Perry took a bunch of pictures but I don't think he got Ozark Co's traffic light or the easter egg hunt------just a bunch of boring stuff. He'll probably show some anyway.

Boy Jeff,
You better be nice to me now. I've got your Beaverwood
here in PEEORIA (Noble that spelling is for you and I.)
:D :D Just rolled into home about 40 minutes ago.
Some guy in a P.T. cruiser kept pulling up along side us
while driving through St. Louis and showing me pictures of lathe turned bowls. I think he wanted to buy the wood on the trailer. Noble we had a great time. Ozark county is really pretty country. Noble showed me the traffic light in Gainesville. He didn't tell me to take a picture of it.
Next time I want to do some fishing at RockBridge.

Oh yes, Noble pointed out where all of the stills used to be
located in Ozark Co. He probably knows where the current
ones are located but since I had a camera he wouldn't show me. ;D ;D
More later.
Oh yes, I took 127 pictures while in Mizzou. Is that enough

Besides, all of that old machinery and grist mills
were a lot better subject. ;D
I did get a picture of you cow that you said was named
"Killer". I also got a picture of Becky helping your Mom
milk the cows.

Here's a picture of Noble with the carriage from the
Corley mill. The CAT D13000 engine is in the background.
If my memory is right, Noble said the mill is eventually
going to be located in Cabool, MO at the park
that the Ozark Older Iron Club has setup. They are going
to run it with a steam engine that was last used by
Noble's relatives in the 1950's.

Here's Bryant River Gospel practicing at the Zanoni Mill
Inn B&B. From left to right is Rita, Connie, Shorty, Noble
and Glain. They are really good and it was fun listening
to them. My foot was tapping all night long.
For they grand finale they had an audience
participation singing of Amazing Grace.
I didn't stand up there but I was singing too. Noble
just didn't catch me.

3 years old till he was about 6. The white
building in the background is the Dairybarn that
Noble's Father built.

I think Topaz is a place but you better ask Noble
for sure. The Topaz mill is a grist mill not a sawmill.

I sure had a good time visiting with Noble while
we were there. Ozark Co. has an interesting history
and Noble is a great tour guide.
If anyone goes to visit, be sure to bring someone else
to milk the cows so Noble can devote full time
to showing you around. That worked the best for us. ;)

Topaz was the trading center for several miles around from before the Civil war until the mid 40's when the mill and store closed. The town also boasted a post office, blacksmith shop, and tomato cannery. Grandad bought the property which included between 5 and 600 acres when the store and mill closed. Dad farmed there and built a 'Grade A' milkbarn when REA brought electricity to the area in 48 or 49. Grandad decided to sell the place about 1950 or 51 and offered it to Dad for $25,000. Dad was afraid he would never be able to pay it off so went to engineering school. The family that Grandad sold to still own the property and have kept the mill in excellent shape. He had ground cornmeal the week before and Perry bought some so Becky could make him some cornbread. Speaking of Becky, boy that Perry is a lucky guy to have such a goodlooking and pleasant wife. I just don't understand why he works when he has a wife that can milk cows ;D

Got my disc of pictures today, they turned out well and I sure appreciate them. If anyone that asked you for the disc has questions I will be glad to try and answer them. Those old water-powered mills are fantastic and you did an excellent job of photographing them.

Yes, I just got the copy whitepe sent my way. Boy, he sure got around a lot more than I did! I'll have to come back another time to see some of those mills. I just had the one day off and I was so tired I was almost crawling.

The little log cabin up on the rise in a couple of those shots- where is that? It reminds me a lot of some of the cabins in WV. lw

That's at Hodson's mill. There was a store building on that spot. The store burned down (with a fantastic gun collection in it) and they built this cabin. Boy I must be old because I remember seeing the guns.
