Who has made the most diesel engines?

The boss and I have a on going friendly arguement about who has made the most diesel engines he says Yanmar I say Kubota Is either right?? I have tried to google it but don't really come up with much. What do you guy's think??

my guess would be detroit

There are a lot of GM 6.2 L and 6.5L military vehicles . So parts will always be available and cheap. It was nothing special but lots of them.

Could be Yanmar given the variety of sizes they've built over the years, from little tractors up through container ships.

yanmar claims over 15 million engines sold since 1933. i still think gm/ detroit for sure if you count the engine class red mentioned and not just the 2 strokes. fyi gm built over 57,000 detroit diesel engines in 1943

that was many more than i would have expected :D

I think Benz invented the diesel engine. They have sold many military, marine and civilian diesels. They could be in the running too.

Correction: Rudolph Diesel invented the diesel engine. Not Benz. Kills my argument. :D

Detroit diesel is rated at 5 million produced since 1938.

Here's something to consider. In 2014, there were 72.3 million cars produced worldwide. 17.8 million of those were in Europe where 50% of the marker is for diesels. Germany produced 5.5 million of them. In 2010, worldwide production of diesel units, not including cars or minivans was 12.1 million units. 1/3 of that production was in China, but that has been a recent trend. 1/4 of the production was in Europe. Japan and North America was way far behind. The recent Volkswagen recall is for 11 million diesels, primarily in their Jetta units.

Volts wagon has supplied diesel engines for other manufacturers as well. I had a Volvo with a VW diesel.

ron that number sounds to low but may be completely accuarate because i dont know ??? ;D :D :D i do know that detroit sold their 1 millionth 60 series engine in the mid 2000s( 08 or 09 i think). the 5 million would show production almost flat from 1943 levels to present

i wore out 3 of those tonka tucks myself also one of their cranes they were good trucsk only thing that wasnt steel was the wheels :D :D :D

I found it on Wikipedia, so you know it has to be accurate. ;) I thought it sounded low, but it seems to be a well researched page. Detroit engines are more on the commercial line and last a long time. So, it seems there isn't as much turnover as compared to Volkswagen, Mercedes, or other car type of diesels. Also, a broader market for the cars.

auto diesel engines, I would say VW. Heavy truck/industrial, I would say Detroit or Cat. Light industrial and light/medium truck I would guess Mercedes Benz. Just about every reefer van and reefer rail car is benz diesel, Heavy marine, I would go with Fairbanks/Morse.
