Actually I used to be pretty good at it.  But, I gave it up.  Took up too much time to play.  Plus, I bought a sawmill  :D.

I'd not paid that much attention to the video before I posted it other than it had a vertical edger. Looks like he was having some saw troubles.  That is one thing the vertical edger is good at showing you. Once adjusted to a perfectly running saw, you can easily see when the headsaw is leading one way or the other. In his case, the saw was leading out of the log, you could tell by the edger saw makes on the log as he finished the cuts. When a saw leads into the log, the edgings and boards will hang together.  Out mill had a larger 5.5 inch edger and a 3 head block carriage.  That mill has a 3.5 inch edger and is a two headblock

I was going to ask you that. I was wondering why the edger kept sawing deeper on the tail end of the log, marring up the next boards.

Yea, that's not good. Its not only marking up the lumber, he is absolutely cutting thick and thin lumber.  I'd have died of embarrassment if someone did a video with the saw running like that.

I'd have died of embarrassment if someone had made a video of some of the stuff that I have done, and it was not the sawmill's fault.    ;D

That guy is slow as molasses compared to he one I used to work for. And as a lumber stacker/lumber grader, my least favorite time was when we are sawing hickory for the tool handle mill. It was mainly 10/4 and the saw liked to dodge inward a lot because of the feed rate. I was busting my donkey trying to keep up and when I had to beat the edging strips off against the other boards it would put me behind. I still miss that job for some reason... Must be that elusive sawdust fever.

I would die of embarrassment if anyone showed pictures of me trying to play golf. Thankfully there are extremely few opportunities for any such pictures to be obtained.

He doesn't have a very smooth rhythm to his sawing.  He sure does stop a lot to set edger saws.  My guess is that his saw guide isn't quite adjusted right, or his saw is a little dull.  You can hear it rubbing on the return.  Some guys figure you can cut the same speed in all types of wood at all times.  I found I had to vary my speed on logs to keep the saw running straight.
