If you watch.. most of the Videos of Skidders in Europe have the 2-3 winches, and the Grapple on the blade.. I have seen a few grapples on blades here, and there used for brush removal, and the moving of small logs

i dont know how to post youtube videos on here but there is another video on there that shows the double winch set up up close on another skidder and it also looks like there is a piston on the arch to raise and lower it. the video is titled "debardage concours de debardage " posted by rossin74.  camox 175 is on the side of the skidder

Its for when they are cutting smaller timber and/or pulpwood. Aside from running 16 chokers (which I have seen guys do in clearcuts) you could never pack enough 6-10 inch trees behind a machine to maximize the payload. With 2 winches its much easier to group your turns and pull however many trees from one side and then use the other winch to pull from the opposite side. Anybody who has ever worked in a scattered woodlot knows all about dropping and hooking over and over and it seems more often than not you always have one or two trees a day that you set a choker on 5 flipping times!! Personally I really like the design and would buy one if they marketed them over here. I think the big butt plate has an advantage too, way more holding power when you are winching a big turn up a hill or pulling loaded trucks around.
It ain't easy...

they had a couple like that up in northern maine in the 70s, they would put softwood on one line and hardwood on the other. made it easier at the deck.
