If you have 28-36" logs and want 6x6, 8x8 cants how would you cut them? Could you cut them around the center, with the corners meeting in the center or just one out of the center?

I am curious to see the answers.  I had one customer who really wanted to save the amount of logs he had to buy, so he had me cut him 4- 6x6's out of big logs.  Some of them he had me get 2 out of them.  He didn't care about boxed heart or anything, the 6x6's were all heartwood.  I sure hope that it don't give him problems and then come back to me.  If they are for garden beds or something along those lines I wouldn't worry about it, get how many you can.

I would try to figure it so I would be boxing the heart, but then the pith doesn't always cooperate.

depends on the use,, chances of bowing are good if not heart centered, and then that's no guarantee either.  It sure takes a lot of logs when heart centering beams for projects that require it.
only have a few chain saws I'm not suppose to use, but will at times, one dog Dolly, pretty good dog, just not sure what for yet,  working on getting the gardening back in order, and kinda thinking on maybe a small bbq bizz,  thinking about it,

You did not indicate the species??

Generally speaking, since you stated that they were 36" logs, I would get at least 5 per log with one containing the pith.

I've been read that with SYP you don't want to saw the pith, I would think that you should box the heart, but don't take my advice I'm a yankee and haven't ever sawed SYP and I've been known to be wrong before...But I figured I'd give you some food for thought until someone else comes along and sets it straight

You can get a pile,  same as framing lumber, just be ready for a crooked product,  if the end use accepts this then go for the gusto!  otherwise time out and figure another way to use the side lumber. jmo
