POSTON WIDEHEAD

For over 5 years my opening to load logs was only 13-6. When longer log jobs came in, I pulled the mill out to saw. This year for some reason a lot of 16 and 20 foot jobs are coming in.

Well enough is enough! Packing the mill up and setting it up 80 yards away was one thing but the HOT summer South Carolina sunshine beating down on you is where I draw the line this year.

This is the opening 3 days ago.

Me and Kirk got the chainsaw, sawed the opening from 13-6 to 22 foot. We took out the existing poles and added square poles.

One new square pole is a 6x6 Cedar and the other square pole is a telephone pole.
In this picture you can see where I sawed into the wrong place with the chainsaw and added a Cedar spacer to fill the void.  ::)

On the bottom of each post I painted on 4 coats of Anchor Seal. I don't know if will help or not but hopefully it will reduce the moisture vs. wood in the ground.

Now its starting to take shape.

I'm pleased with the upgrade to a wider opening.

Sweet!!! My opening lane is 16'...I get 16'6" through it by weaving...it's a pita... I drop 20's on the ground and push them in...not pretty, but it works...I'm due for a change myself...time rules everything, I guess....

Good to see that you fixed the siding.  I was thinking for a bit there that the Cobbler's children had no shoes (old saying).

Dave,

I am sure there is a Rock Hill Historical Society somewhere whose members will be paying you a visit in the near future using these photos someone surreptitiously provided them to file a complaint about a stately old structure in their area being modified just to provide a modicum of creature comfort to the owner and his helpers. Once their investigation is complete you will no doubt be directed to restore the structure to its original magnificent appearance using authentic materials from the period.

Good luck and enjoy the update (while it lasts).

I don't know, that opening looks suspicious.....kind of looks like it was widened with a 21 foot long log and forklift?? :D

David, you are so much smarter than me.  I would've built a whole new barn just to get the 21' opening....not really  :D

I like how Postons shed is open at the other side as well...to let the breeze come through.

If building a new shed would the North East side be the best for the oppening?
