What are you looking to do?  Haul off a buncher?  If that's the case and you're twitching to a delimber or a slasher, you'll probably find that the grapple is better.  I haul off a buncher with my cable skidder and it works pretty well.  We also don't have any mechanization on the yard so we need to limb all the wood on the trails.  Does the 548 have a winch too?

yea has a winch too. i want to go back into logging, i want to get a 180 or 210 prentice with a slasher. the grapple would make it easier

if it has the winch i say go for it.  i kinda figure you have build a set of hooks on the fenders to hold the grapple out of the way if you want to pull like a cable skidder. and if youre in big wood just use the grapple, making bunches as you go.

Grapple skidders are messy. damage young trees when doing a select cut . permitted move ? just some things to consider. They can be faster and easier for a one man operation.

Unless the seller really needs to unload it in a hurry I have a hard time believing its in great shape for that money. The 540D cable and 548D grapple skidders were and still are pretty common. The 548s, 360 timberjacks, and smaller grapple skidders are becoming pretty popular as hand cut guys age and are looking for anything that makes the job easier. Also real nice on jobs that have a mix of species and grades to sort if you dont have a loader. In decent condition with moderately good rubber those machines are still selling in the mid 20k dollar range. If its everything the man says it is, and its in good shape, its worth the money. But if its a 12000 dollar machine in need of 15000 more before you can go to work, beware. Best advice I ever got before I went out logging was from an older gentleman I worked with. He told me " If you want to work on equipment, open a garage. You want to make money logging, buy equipment thats ready to go logging" Not saying the stuff doesn't break down, or that I don't spin my share of wrenches, but I just caution you to be careful with those deals that seem just a little to good.
It ain't easy...

i like the way you put it PAFaller. you are exactly right. i would rather be working on cutting timber, than working on equip, i guess its like they say you get what you pay for. i know what shape my c5 is in. i know i can go hook up my battery cables and it will start right up. its never failed me before.
