How can one achieve a vertical grain pattern on multiple surfaces of materials molded with 90 degree angles?  Does it require special lumber purchases of only certain segments quarter sawn?  I'm very green at this!

You need to use rift sawn lumber.  I bet there are diagrams if you use the search feature at the top of the page.

Some show the oriantation of the rift sawn board.
