Title: I don't understand it. ???

I have a soft spot for animals, especially porcupine's and snapping turtles. If they don't bother me or my home I could care less. The above local newspaper article is from where I live, bumped into a couple the other day, had to herd the one out of the road. I don't know maybe it's just me but growing up on a farm and being a logger in the woods all day stuff like this doesn't set well with me.

Those porcupine can do some damage to trees. And it don't matter what kind of trees either.
I have never seen a turtle damage a tree.  ;D  They was laying eggs down by the brook, just below my house.

They stopped the bounty. They are considered a lost/starving persons food. Easy to catch, can be killed with a club and their liver is good eating. They have a purpose in nature. They will nibble limbs off trees such as hemlock and the deer will eat them. Sometimes providing food for them in deep snows. The trees they kill become homes for other critters.

As a rule I don't kill it if I'm not going to eat it.  Exceptions are anything that is causing harm to my stuff.  Porkies eating my sugar maples and defending themselves against my dogs are an exception.  On public and other peoples land they are none of my concern and have their place.  Back in the day DNR foresters used to carry .22 pistols for porky control.  Beating an animal to death for sport is just wrong  >:( :( >:(
We stopped, along with other cars, for a snapping turtle to cross the road by Logan's Landing in Traverse City a few days ago.

I read that article...sad, very sad. It's like the tough guys that run over turtles. If these guys are sooo tough they should be in the service fighting for our country. Or someone could take them outback and p$%p on them and make them smell like men.

Someday you may find your wiring or rad hose eaten by a porky. They do cause damage, just shoot no need to beat to death. Some forest road culvert pipes match the ground as the porky's eat the metal. They do a number on buildings to.

I've got 1 landowner they literally ate the T-1/11 off the side of his whole house. I don't disagree with population control, sometimes it got to be done. A bunch of kids hunting them down to club them on the road at night isn't the answer.  >:(

Yup, wait till you go to work some morning and find your skidder all chewed up. My year old 540D got it bad in Scandia,PA. Hoses, fuel line, all the control knobs, steering wheel, seat ,hardhat...all chewed to hell. I had to wrap the articulation with chicken wire at night to keep them out of the fuel tank area.

Salt on a stump near where you are working keeps them at bay for the most part. They chew hoses and steering wheels etc. looking for salt.
