I am a librarian at a public library in Minnesota. I have a patron with a 1979 (or close to that year) Massey Ferguson skidder with a 320 Perkins motor and power shift transmission. He needs to fix a part of the transmission called the suction screen. He would like to fix it, but does not know where the suction screen is located in the transmission. Does anyone have any idea where the suction screen is located in the transmission? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

the suction screen is in the bottom of the transmission and is a filtor of sorts that keeps any sedament from being sucked into tho fluid passages. You should be able to access the screen by removing the transmission pan on the bottom of the trans. ( It's sorta like an oil pan on an engine)

He should go to a Massey dealer.  They'll help him out and would probably make him copies of the pages he needs from the service manual.  Massey power shuttle trannys are becoming obsolete.  Parts are still out there but are getting harder to find.

On the Massey-fergusen log skidder the suction screen is in the bottom of the tranny right where the suction line( that feeds the tranny pump)comes out of the tranny oil case(very close to the bottom, towards the engine). Some are behind a large plug 90 degrees from the line or some are directly in the base of the line itself. If there is no large plug beside it just pull the feed line itself a shine a flash lite in the orfice and there it is.

Tell us where in Minnesota you are located and maybe there is a dealer nearby. However MF dealers are getting hard to find
