First Michigan Wolverine Spotted in 200 Years

A bilologist has confirmed the sighting of a real Michigan wolverine, about 200 years after the species was last seen in the state that uses the small but ferocious animal as its unofficial nickname.

Coyote hunters spotted a wolverine near Ubly, about 90 miles north of Detroit. Michigan DNR wildlife biologist Annie Karr saw the forest predator Tuesday and snapped a picture of the animal as it ran out of the woods and across a field.

Probably the same zoo that all the cougars that have been sighted in Minnesota escaped from.  One of my neighbors claims to have seen a wolverine on my property and I think I may believe him.  We have a lot of wild land around here.

I just saw a clip on 9&10 about it and someone has speculated that it may have came over from Canada in a load of garbage ;D.  It's bad enought that we get Canadian trash but now we're getting their animals too : ;) ;D  Even wolves and moose come over.  Keep your critters on your side of the border! ;)  If it is a wild animal I'd say it probably crossed over on the ice but if that was the case I would expect that in the eastern U.P. not the Thumb.  They also said it was the first confirmed sighting of a wolverine in the Wolverine State since 1837.  Legend has it that the reason Wolverine, my home town, is thus named is because the 1st mailman of the town which was then called Torrey had to fight off a pack of Wolverines to the south along the West Branch when he delivered mail one day.  The name was then changed to Wolverine. ;) ;)  That's the legend ;D 8)

The environmentalist will have fun with that one--it WILL be considered an endangered species and you gonna lose some sort of hunting and maybe even some fishing privileges--one door and one really big foot!!!

Wolverine Bites the Dust.

The only known wild wolverine in Michigan has died. First spotted in the Thumb in February, 2004, it was found dead recently by hikers at the Minden Bog in the Minden City State Game Area. Conservation officers said there was no visible sign of trauma; the animal was taken to the DNRE veterinary lab for closer examination. This was the first wolverine ever verified in Michigan. Biologists say that if wolverines were ever native here, they were driven out about 200 years ago. Director Rebecca Humphries had issued an order protecting this wolverine from harassment or harm. It was thought to be alive and well until it was found dead.

P.S. An examination by DNRE veterinarians showed she died of natural causes.
