He was feeding on the high Bush cranberries growing by the outhouse. His crop was full. He was up in the top of the Bush. I waited for him to put his head up then aimed high. :)

No deer hunting today. The woods is an impenetrable wall of bent trees and snow. During the day while I was shoveling, I could hear crashes from breaking and falling tops. The front field depicted was probably safe.:)cra

That is what I woke up to yesterday but not nearly as much, it is pretty well gone now.
Musta been warmer out east. Our snow was dry and fluffy so when the gales of November came thru it all blew into drifts. No shoveling required this time. Yours is much more peaceful and pretty.

Not sure how to approach getting in the woods to hunt. It's a solid tangled wall of snow and trees. The trails are non existant. While shoveling yesterday I could hear tops snapping from the woods
I actually love ta hunt when it's like dat. I get a feeling of total seclusion wandering around in dat stuff. And if ya take yer time it's easy ta sneak up on dem deer if ya know where they are bedded. ;) It can be rather difficult ta see far enough ta get a good shot though. :D

not always, but often. We have bears wolves coyotes Bobcats cougars and redsquirrels. :D
The gun is more because the outhouse over looks berry patches food plots and apple trees. That's why I'll be eating grouse this week. :)

Pretty pictures. I never ate spruce grouse so I can't comment on the taste but I gather they are pretty good.
I have started carrying my 10/22 Ruger .22 with me and Sampson on the 4 wheeler when I throw hay out for the horse and mule. We went out about noon today and a big fox squirrel was feeding on the walnuts. We chased him about 60-70 feet up the tree and he jumped. I still don't see how they survive that. Sampson was right on him and put him up a big locust and I shot the squirrel. I believe that was the toughest old squirrel I have ever tried to skin. I have him soaking in water in the fridge and may marinate him in buttermilk to see if that helps tenderize him any. I plan to flour and fry him then put him in the pressure cooker to see if he gets tender enough to eat.
We had our first snow flurries yesterday but nothing ever stuck on the ground.
That doesn't look like a spruce Partridge to me, and from my experience they are worse eating than woodchuck. :D
It's not. It's a ruffed grouse. Locally known as a partridge.
The snow destroyed my pop up blind. Shattered the fiberglass support rods. I wanted to go back earlier in the storm, but knew it wasn't safe. I found where several tree tops had came down in the trail. The back field is beautiful, but you can see what this snow did to the alders.

The tops came down to the ground when there was about 8" of snow, then we got 6 more pinning them down. They are not going to just pop up.the whole forest understory is like this, making it most difficult to get around.
Hiking around in close to knee deep snow makes a guy hungry! Best part of making a delicious pot of bowtie goulash? I dont have to cook again for a couple days and I get to eat the whole pot!

Thanks for clarifying the grouse question/mistake. We have a grouse here in WV some folks call a native pheasant. I don't know if that is the same thing. I have not shot any.
Did the snow destroy the fabric of your blind or just the support poles? Can you find replacement poles at an outdoor outfitters type store? I would think they should be available.

I dont know how bad it is yet, I just dug it out and found at least two shattered rods. I cut some poles from dead wood and propped it up so it would be usable as a blond yet.

Biggest bodied deer I have ever seen were no where near farm country, but they live for a long time so they get to grow old. Heavy beams, but moderate spread to the rack.

I've hunted Pa,West Virginia ,Colorado and Ohio .This part of Ohio probably has the largest body white tail with the biggest racks because of the food supply .My lady friends deceased husband and one of my best best friends had one of the largest which I think still holds a record in the "Ohio big bucks "
Those bucks are amusing when the rut comes around .They throw all caution to the wind .I see a few on the edge of my woods,head up sniffing the wind in the light of day as if nobody sees them .I don't even hunt any more but I do take pictures .
Been 3 or 4 does around and 1 buck. Never yet seen him, just tracks on the road. They been crossing up above the house through cousin's Christmas trees. Been guys hunting the fields hard behind there, but that all ended last weekend and that buck is still making tracks. Buck only hunting up here. Used to be large herds of deer here and a lot of fellas from south of the border took some trophy buck back home. My grandfather was a guide for nearly 60 years with his own camps. Loss of winter habitat killed off the deer and the coyotes (coy-dogs actually) didn't help none. But right here where I grew up in farm country we never had many deer, we have a lot of moose instead.
Had a spike horn chasing one of our home doe's yesterday out in back of the house. We have 3 doe's that stay right close to the house, especially during hunting time ;D.
Great pictures Jeff. Back when I had a real job (worked for someone else), the first day of deer season was a national holiday,at least in my mind. Once I started working for myself, I decided that I was a way better excavating contractor than I was a hunter,and thus much more likely to eat, if I sat on the seat of an excavator
Ive got until Wednesday to outwit that big bodied buck. I have a lot of pics of him. Some during the day at stands where i wasnt. I saw him in perso friday afternoon. One antler beam sticking out from behind a tree and his stomping left foot. He left directly away behind the tree.
I got a picture of him actually pissing on one of my mock scrapes. I think he was saying ha ha!

Good luck on getting him. I had a big buck on Ft. Benning (Very unusual as most deer there were pretty small) one time turn 90 degrees to me and kept a 12-14 poplar directly in line with us as he calmly walked away. No sign he ever knew I was there. I could see antlers sticking out on either side but could never get a shot on him. It amazes me how slick they can be to escape sometime.

Are you talking to me, the guy that will put him down swiftly and humanely if given the chance, or the wolves here that will start eating him while he is stll alive when they catch up to him? And they will as he is an old buck for here. He will slow, if not this year, then soon and the wolves will run him down in the snow.
