New member here based out of the Pacific Northwest. I'm working on milling up some timbers for a small cabin, and wondering what folks think about the utility of Grand fir. We've got lots of it, which is the main reason I'd like to use it if it's good enough. Specifically, I'm thinking about making some 5x8 floor beams out of it, as well as potentially some joists. The floor won't be bearing a lot of weight, but obviously want it to be solid and long-lasting.

Thanks in advance, cheers

Welcome Ian,
Toolbox calcs to the lower left of the page, scroll to the bottom of that page, hit the beam and column link, second calc down is heavy timber.

Grand fir is under the Hem-Fir design values on the drop down when you're figgering. Most floor loads for residential are 40psf live + 10 psf dead  for a total of 50 psf design load.

I'm east coast, some of the western sawyers will need to chime in about what it is like to work with.
