Title: Please Be Smarter than Me!
Post by: POSTON WIDEHEAD on November 20, 2018, 09:13:35 PM
A blade broke today.
Its happens to all of us.
I took the door off the idle side and the wheel was still spinning 192.3 mph.

For some unknown reason, I was in a hurry and took a 2 foot piece of 1 inch square
sticker and said I would stop the wheel.

I was doing good until the sticker hit the wrong side of the wheel.
The spoke hit that stick and jabbed me right in my belly, knocked me to the ground I could could not get any breath.
Kirk thought it had hit a rib but I couldn't talk or breath.
Took about 40 seconds of gasping to finally start to breath.
Tonight I'm am very sore. VERY SORE!
Please.....ya'll can tease the Old goat if you want.....I can talk it but please don't try this.

My ankle is fine Caveman unless I twist it. Then it will swell a little.
Kirk said the injury looks like the same injury when you take a bullet and have a vest on.
Said my reaction was the same too.  :o

:o I'm glad it wasn't any worse. Trouble seems to find me easily enough, I don't need to go looking for it.

Glad to hear you are sort of OK, but you really should go to the emergency vet and have them look at that.  You and I have both seen how spleen/liver injuries can hide and just what they can do to you when they decide to go.

I'm not sure exactly what that is a picture of😳 Seriously, you ought to get that checked out!

While it does not "look" that bad the description of how you reacted and the timeline that you gave;  I absolutely suggest that you go have someone (qualified MD) take a look.
You are probably OK but internal bleeding can sneak up and take you out with no warning.
Just saying.

Like Magic said, I am fine but yes sore.
And I mean sore.
All Kirk and I did today was clean, grease, adjust and other maintenance on the mill. I did sand and put in 2 bow ties on a RO Slab.
I was just taking it easy and doing some things that really needs to be done. Sometimes life works that way....you get slowed down for a reason.
A bunch of y'all called and texted me....
Thanks.....sometimes things happen to give you time to talk to your family.

DanG POSTON, that hurts just thinking about it. I sincerely hope you are ok and healing quickly. Sometimes a guy (or goat) just has to slow down and be careful. You and others here have been giving me a healthy respect for working around my saw, expecially the powerhead and blade.

Well I have a Vets appointment for this Monday ay 8:15 am.

The big knot on my belly is getting bigger it seems.
I'm having a little pain in my Gall Bladder area.

If I pick something up like a 1 x 6 x 10 Pine I'm fine.
If I try to pick up a 4x4x10 Pine I feel like my guts are coming out.
I can go to Walmart and I don't think anything is wrong with me.

I think something tore.
I'll update after I know something.
Y'all say a teeny tiny prayer for me that they DON'T have to open 1 of my stomachs up.

Ugg - I hope it goes well my friend. Keep us posted.  Of course your mention of going to Walmart and thinking nothing is wrong with you is not really a fair comparison.  I ALWAYS feel quite normal after a trip to our local Walmart.   :D

I go along with the three things that Magicman said. And if that Jeff guy is right you better get a good vet and have them open you up and fix the problem.

My appointment was for 8:15 but they didn't open until 12 because of ice on the roads,
Had an MRI done and I have a bruised Aorta and Liver.
Goong back for blood work for my liver next Week.
The doc squeezed my knot on my belly and I almost passed out. Told me to keep an eye on it and if it didn't start getting smaller he would send me to a Surgeon.
Told me not to pick up anything heavier than a fork!
So that's it for now.
Thanks y'all

Glad you reported back in. I thought they may have sent you off to the BBQ pit. Sounds like this could be pretty serious. I hope it will sort itself out without surgery. I don't know how many times I've picked up a stick to stop the idle side wheel the as you did. I do beleive I'll be changing my ways in the future.

Serious injury , glad it wasn't worse. Yield not to temptation , follow the docs instruction. Customer of mine had rotator cuff surgery on right shoulder , didn't listen to doc , kept working with it only days after. No problem. A few months later he had left shoulder repaired , did the same. Major mistake , now he has serious problem and is really out of commission. Use the little fork!
 Speedy recovery!

Yikes!
The aorta is a useful thing. About the size of a garden hose and not an optional assesory. And the liver is kinda useful too.
That Dang sticker came close to doing you a severe insult!
Good advice for you from all of the wise men that have posted.
I'm with Ellmoe,  limit yourself to the fondue fork for a good period of time.
Best wishes, and get well soon from Way Up Yonder.

Sheesh, Goat! An aorta is kind of a big deal, not to mention a liver. Take care of yourself or the next Pig Roast may end up being a Goat Roast!

I'm wondering though, you can't pick up anything heavier than a fork, so does that mean you can't pick up a fork with food on it?    :o  ::)  ;D

Take the time to get better.  They call it a liver for a reason and I don't know why they call it an aorta but as Andries said, its not optional.  A lot of near death or painful life experiences eventually become funny stories - I look forward to hearing this one in detail.

By the way, I eat my grits with a fork.  Who wants runny grits?

We have plenty of snow left and a Lull with a blown steering cylinder, come on over :D
Title: Re: Please Be Smarter than Me!
Post by: Southside on December 14, 2018, 10:23:14 PM
Oh come on Don - the steering cylinders are babies, this was the main boom mama, nice and heavy.  I am sure you can come up with some formula that compensates for the radial compression of the sheer cross axial area of the piston assembly and then substitute it for an equally sized piece of Osage that will have greater longitudinal strength while allowing for adequate maximum deviation flexation or something along those lines!!   :D

:D :D I bet that was fun. I just switched to front steer only and looking for forty acres to turn that thing around.  The Lull is gonna be fun, I think the serial number is 0002. This afternoon was digging the front spindle outta the skidsteer. Sounds like we all had a winter day.
