Title: mixed species logs in build
Post by: dogone on November 18, 2018, 06:39:54 PM
???  I have thoughts of building or having built a log cabin. Can you use different types of logs? Just a thought : darker logs for first rows and lighter for top rows. Thinking it may add some character but have never seen it so probably a reason why not.

Typical old log homes here where white oak with poplar at floor and roof plates, ease of notching. Several I've worked on had mixed species, whatever they could get nearby of the right size. We did a barn rebuild last year with white oak logs low and poplar above.

Not quite the same but I built a timber frame barn out of hemlock, red pine, and tamarack for the frame, never had an issue.

Straight trees that are available work.  My cabin is Red Pine and Poplar.
